Teacher Mocks Jesus, Biblical Creation in Lecture Slide

A biology teacher who describes himself as ‘an open-minded skeptic’ purportedly showed a slide in one of his classes that mocks Jesus and describes biblical creation as ‘magic.’
Christofer Bang is a lecturer at Arizona State University who teaches biology and ecology courses. According to his academic profile page, his areas of “expertise” include ecology, evolution and plant biology.

According to news reports last week, Bang mocked biblical creation and Christianity during a lecture in his biology class. A student who wished to remain anonymous shared information on Bang’s lecture with Campus Reform.

According to the student, Bang began his lecture by showing a slide titled “Evolution vs. Creationism.” The slide featured two cartoons—one depicting Charles Darwin with the words “genetics,” “adaption,” and “natural selection,” along with images of an ape-like creature gradually evolving into a man. The other cartoon showed a caricature of Jesus creating a man, with the words “zap!” and “magic!”

Bang reportedly showed the evolution vs. creation slide in his BIO 100 class, which covers basic principles of biology. The student who anonymously captured the picture and sent it to Campus Reform explained that “the actual presentation itself, beyond that slide, didn’t really discuss creationism.”

According to the student, several students thought the slide was inappropriate.

“Quite a few students in the lecture hall were bothered by the picture, and it didn’t contribute to the lecture besides adding spite,” the student said.

Sandy Leander, manager of media relations for ASU’s School of Life Sciences, told Campus Reform that the slide was intended to stimulate discussion about evolution and creation.

“The image you are referring to is on the title page of a [PowerPoint] and sets the stage for a discussion about the extremes of the public discourse on evolution/creationism,” she stated.

Bang describes himself as “an open-minded skeptic” on his Twitter profile. His personal Twitter page features Tweets mocking pro-life groups, Fox News, and various conservative political figures.

On his personal blog, Bang says he tries to cultivate “sound skepticism” in his students.

“In my teaching, I try to engage students using examples from familiar surroundings to increase their awareness of nature,” he states. “We are constantly exposed to examples of bad science in media, so by exposing flaws in ‘sciency’ products I try to teach my students sound skepticism and critical thinking.”

After reports of Bang’s lecture surfaced last week, many people expressed dismay and concern, saying the disparaging of Christianity in a public classroom was grossly inappropriate.

“All the professor needed to do was state the facts about evolution and move on,” one commenter opined. “There’s no need to attack Christianity in the process.”

“Professors’ opinion on religion has no place in the discussion,” another asserted. “Their only stake should be in the presentation of data and facts. Let students draw their own conclusions about how it will interact and intersect with their faith and understanding of their religious doctrine.”

“Instead of ridiculing the absurdity of Christianity, perhaps Professor Bang should learn a little more about the U.S. Constitution, read the Federalist papers, or take a religion class,” a third commenter suggested. “At the very least he could cite a verse from Genesis in his next presentation.”

Islamic State use Iraqi Churches as Torture Chambers

Churches in Qaraqosh, Iraq captured by Islamic State militants are now being used as torture chambers, according to a priest from Mosul.

Abu Aasi, told The Sunday Times that Bahnam Wa Sara and Al Kiama churches in Qaraqosh were being used to hold prisoners. The majority-Christian city was captured by IS in August, forcing tens of thousands to flee to Erbil.

“These two churches are being used as prisons and for torture,” Aasi said from his hiding place in Baghdad.

“Most inside are Christians and they are being forced to convert to Islam. Isis have been breaking all the crosses and statues of Mary.”

Aasi added that three Christian prisoners had died because they were sick and had been neglected.

While the claims could not be independently verified, they add to reports of churches in Mosul being used as prisons.

Fides news reported almost two weeks ago that detainees were held at the ancient Chaldean Church of the Immaculate Conception in the eastern part of the city, having been blindfolded and handcuffed.

St George’s monastery was also allegedly used as a female detention centre.

Almost all of Mosul’s Christian inhabitants were driven out in June, given the choice of conversion to Islam, paying a tax or face execution.

The convent of the Chaldean Sisters of the Sacred Heart, close to the monastery, has reportedly been bombed by IS militants. Several other Christian churches, Yazidi shrines and Shiite mosques have also been demolished by the group.

Pastor Dresses Horse In Wedding Dress to Protest Same Sex Marriage

It’s not something you see every day, a horse in a wedding dress standing outside the federal courthouse.

“I thought it was laughable and I believe he was going for a ridiculous protest and he certainly got one,” says Eddie Outlaw, LGBT advocate.

Reverend Edward James of Bertha Chapel Missionary Baptist Church dressed his horse, Charlotte, in a makeshift wedding dress to protest same-sex marriage.

“The horse is to show the ridiculous idea of two men getting married,” says James.

James says after a federal decision was made in November to lift the ban on same-sex marriage in the state, he is hoping Judge Carlton Reeves will change his mind.

“I’m a Mississippian and I’m praying and hoping that we will remain a state that only recognizes marriage between a man and a woman,” says James.

“The argument is not about sin or religious belief or what the church says about marriage equality. It is strictly about benefits, rights, protection extended by government not by the church,” says Outlaw…Read More

YouTube for Android Gets Live Chat Feature

YouTube v6.0 for Android, which introduced the Material Design UI to the app, brings an interesting new feature. It adds the Live Chat option on mobile for live streaming videos – an option that was earlier limited to the desktop.
The Live Chat option is seen at the bottom of the live streaming video on YouTube v6.0 for Android, and users will be able to read in the live conversational threads, just like the YouTube website on desktop. Users will be able to participate in live chats if they are signed-in.

Users will need to tap on the up arrow or slide the bar to the top of the window, from the bottom ‘Live Chat’ bar (see above). First spotted by Android Police, the feature should be available to all users running YouTube v6.0 and above. Users who still haven’t received the updated app can visit APK Mirror to download the signed apk file.

As part of its ‘apk teardown’ of the YouTube v6.0.11 app last week, Android Police also spotted code that indicated the Google-owned firm will soon introduce two new abilities for uploaders – to replace the existing audio track on their videos with a new one, and auto-resume uploads.

Meanwhile, the company is also reportedly testing an Autoplay feature that will allow users to stream the next suggested video automatically.

As discovered by an Indian blog Technomedia, the new ‘Autoplay’ option will sit at the top left of video list. The user will be able to turn on/ off the toggle switch to enable and disable the feature.

In full-screen playback mode, users will see the text as ‘Up Next’ followed by the video name, on the top of video as loading animation. Also, if the browser is not being used for some time, it pauses the Autoplay and post the message, “Busy? We’ve paused autoplay”, notes the report.

Last week, the company started rolling out its new offline feature for India. Users will now be able to download videos to their Android device for offline playback. The feature, which was announced earlier this year alongside the Android One, is ad-supported and available for Android and iOS devices.

Update Sydney Hostage Siege: Christians and Muslims Unite in Prayers

Religious leaders are joining together in prayer as a hostage incident in Sydney unfolds, and are urging their followers to do the same.

Churches, synagogues and mosques across the country will be open tonight for prayer services, and a multi-faith vigil is being held in Lakemba Mosque in Sydney today.

President of the Lebanese Muslim Association, Samier Dandan, told the BBC: “The vigil crossed many different religious groups – Muslims, Catholics, Protestants, Jewish communities… This is a showcase and demonstration that the community can come together in solidarity and work together as a family to try to address whatever issue that we face collectively.”

A statement signed by over 40 Muslim institutes, groups and associations was released today condemning the incident.
“The Australian Muslim community shares with fellow Sydneysiders their utter shock and horror at the unprecedented scenes emerging from the Lindt café in Martin Place this morning. Our immediate thoughts go to the hostages and their loved ones. We pray for their safety and hope this matter is resolved quickly and peacefully,” the statement reads.

It continues: “We reject any attempt to take the innocent life of any human being, or to instil fear and terror into their hearts. Any such despicable act only serves to play into the agendas of those who seek to destroy the goodwill of the people of Australia and to further damage, and ridicule the religion of Islam, and Australian Muslims throughout the country.”

The statement issues a reminder that the Arabic inscription on the flag displayed in the café “is not representative of a political statement, but reaffirms a testimony of faith that has been misappropriated by misguided individuals that represent no one by themselves”.

The Muslim groups call on “all Australians to stand together and support each other” as the events unfold.

“We pray for a swift resolution to this crisis with no injuries or loss of life,” they conclude.

The Archbishop of Sydney tweeted this morning asking for prayer for all those involved in the incident, and for a peaceful resolution. The hashtag #PrayForSyndey is currently trending in Australia.

University ‘De-Recognizes’ Christian Group for Accepting Only Christian Leaders

San Jose State University in California has intimated Ratio Christi, a grassroots campus student ministry, of its decision to “de-recognized” the campus chapter as punishment for the ministry’s “discriminatory” policy for leadership positions.

School officials wrote to Ratio Christi, explaining their action is as per a new California State University Executive Order on how an organization selects its officers, the ministry revealed on its website this week.

The ministry requires its chapter officers to be Christian and holding biblical beliefs, and the State of California now deems that as “discriminatory.”

“De-recognition” means the school chapter of the ministry is no longer eligible for student funding and financial services, and nor can it participate in student organization fairs, ceremonies or training, the school officials said in a letter in October.

“Colleges and universities should be encouraging student leadership, not stifling it,” says Ratio Christi President Rick Schenker in response.

“All college students, including religious students, should have the right to form groups around shared beliefs and choose leaders who reflect those beliefs without being shut down and kicked off campus,” Schenker adds.

“Imagine the College Democrats being required to have a Republican student leader, or the local chapter of PETA being required to have a meat-eating leader. The results of the Cal State policy are simply ridiculous…Read More
