Pastor of Mars Hill Bellevue Campus Changes Name to “Bellevue Church”

The big Bellevue campus of Mars Hill Church has filed registration papers under the new name Bellevue Church and is seeking a new lead pastor.

Lead Pastor Thomas Hurst announced his resignation to the congregation during the 10:30 a.m. service on Sunday, two days after Mars Hill announced that it would dissolve with its 13 “campuses” set loose to form new churches, consolidate with other churches or dissolve.

“Hurst told the congregation that he wanted to lead the new Bellevue Church, but he is tired and just can’t do it,” Warren Throckmorton reported on Patheos.

Hurst will continue membership in the new church and is on the Bellevue Church’s board.

“Hurst said the church leadership is looking to find somebody to preach the Bible for the new church,” Throckmorton added.

The Bellevue campus is where controversial Mars Hill co-founder Mark Driscoll announced on Aug. 24 that he was taking an extended, six-week leave of absence for “processing, healing and growth…Read More

Kenyan Christians Under Attack From Somali Extremists

Christians in eastern Kenya are on high alert after a wave of attacks by Somali Muslims.

One pastor in the Garissa area who cannot be named for security reasons told Open Doors that Christians are scared of attacks and as a result, are staying away from church.

Open Doors said the town of Garissa, which is around 50 miles away from the border with Somalia, has been the scene of several attacks and “has been nearly overrun by Somali Muslims”.

A recent hand grenade attack on a kiosk in Bula Punda, which injured eight people, has left locals feeling nervous about their security.

Four of the injured have since been released from hospital. The other four are still being treated for shrapnel wounds.

One suspect has been arrested by authorities in connection with the attack.

Many of those living in Garissa are referred to as “down-Kenyans” because they have come to the city from other parts of the country to work.

The pastor who spoke to Open Doors believes it is these down-Kenyans who are being targeted in the attacks because they are regarded as outsiders and an “unwelcome Christian presence in the Muslim-dominated area”…Read More

ISIS Supporters Hack Two Canadian Christian Websites

Barrie Police say there is no threat to the public following the hacking of two local Christian websites by potential supporters of the militant group ISIS.

The websites of both Unity Christian High School, and Inniswood Baptist Church, were hacked with pro-ISIS messages.

Those messages included the words ‘I love ISIS’, photos of fighter jets and victims of bloody attacks, as well as a call for the elimination of America.

Aaron Harnden, the Principal at Unity Christian High School, says their website was hacked on Sunday afternoon.

“The I.T. department wanted to take it off and our board chair went and talked to the police department as well,” said Harnden. “You hope those kind of things don’t happen but the reality is it does exist.”

The same message that was posted on Unity Christian’s website also appeared on the Inniswood Baptist Church website on Monday…Read More

Comedian Verbally Attacks Preacher on NYC Subway

New York City is an eclectic place. Randomly, people break out in soliloquys, song performances and gospel sermons on trains.

But Lea DeLaria, known as Big Boo from Orange is the New Black, verbally attacked a preacher for telling others “Jesus loves you” and “read your Bibles.”

“You have no right!” yelled the openly gay comedian, who seemed particularly offended by the impromptu sermon. “Other people believe other things and have every right to believe other things on this planet and in this world,” she elevated her voice.

Wearing a “Bad Jew” t-shirt, DeLaria also said Jesus never told him to preach on the subway, challenging the proclaimer to show her in the Bible where he was instructed to do so.

Though Christ told his followers in Mark 16:15 to “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation,” DeLaria felt her right not to hear religious talk was being infringed upon and warranted her aggressive exchange with the stranger.

“You show me where Jesus told you to do this,” she challenged.

The preacher agreed, unphased, but before he could, she interrupted again.

“Don’t just read me one quote sir. You gotta read me the whole thing, because about two lines after what you’re about to read me, it’s gonna tell you not to eat pork. It’s gonna tell you not to wear clothes made of mixed fiber,” she said, zoning in on Old Testament laws set in place for Jews to follow…Read More

Red Cross Volunteer Dismissed for Expressing Biblical Views On Same Sex Marriage

A British Red Cross volunteer has been dismissed from the organization after he protested against same-sex marriage earlier this year.

Bryan Barkley, 71, has volunteered with the Red Cross for about 20 years. He works with the international family tracing service and helps locate and reunite families in the UK with relatives in other countries.

But earlier this year, Barkley was part of a protest outside Wakefield Cathedral where he held signs that read, “No Same Sex Marriage.” The protest took place on the day that the first same-sex marriages were allowed in England.

“What have I done wrong? I passionately believe that the institution of marriage is between a man and a woman and is the cornerstone of our society. Why is it wrong to say so in public?

“Freedom of expression is being stifled in this country.

“I have nothing against homosexuals. But I don’t believe Parliament was representing the views of the people when it changed the definition of marriage.”

Barkley is appealing his dismissal with help from the Coalition for Marriage.

Coroner Calls For Arrest Of Pastor T.B Joshua

Pastor T.B. Joshua failed today to appear at a coroner’s inquest, intended to determine how 116 people were killed in a September 12 building collapse at his Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) in Lagos.

The pastor was called to present evidence that supported his claim that the church was attacked by terrorists flying over the building, something experts have ruled out. The pastor was also facing allegations that members of his church thwarted emergency rescue operations the day of the tragedy.

“The first three days (after the collapse) were marred by the so-called church sympathizers and the crowd,” said the head of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, during the inquest. “By the time we attained momentum after 96 hours a lot of things had gone bad.”

“The crowd impeded our operation. They did not allow our personnel and equipment to come in. They frustrated the emergency workers at the scene,” he furthered. “Instead of allowing trained rescue workers with specialist equipment to search for survivors, only church members and volunteers were allowed to pick through the rubble,” he said.

Oke-Osanyintolu additionally claimed that SCOAN staff were not forthcoming with details that would aid an effective investigation. “We were not allowed to do documentation. Photographs of the incident were not allowed,” he said. “We asked for the manifest to know the number and identities of the people in the building, we were not given. We asked for the building plan, we were not given.”

The coroner, Oyetade Komolafe, said last week that Joshua would face arrest if he dismissed the inquest, but Joshua’s lawyers are claiming that he, as well as the building’s contractors, never received summons to appear.

“We don’t want the impression to be created that The Prophet is avoiding the court,” Olalekan Ojo, Joshua’s lawyer, explained. “The Man of God has not been personally served the witness summons. He was unavoidably absent when the sheriff went for the service.”

Despite this, the lawyer did not accept the summons on his client’s behalf.

Vanguard Nigeria reports that inspections indicated that the buildings were structurally defective, bearing more than they were designed to.

“We want Prophet Joshua to know that the court is not persecuting anybody but (trying) to find the truth. He should come,” the coroner said.

“As a prophet of God that he claims to be, he must not do anything that will make him to be at variance with the law.”

Pope Francis invites Rick Warren, Russell Moore, N. T. Wright to upcoming colloquium on marriage

The Vatican will host religious leaders from across the religious spectrum later this month for a conference where they are expected to defend traditional marriage as between a man and a woman.

Christianity Today report – Even Southern Baptists know not to turn down an invitation from the Pope.

Rick Warren, senior pastor of Saddleback Church, and Russell Moore, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberties Commission, will meet Pope Francis and offer an “evangelical Protestant” perspective as part of a Vatican colloquium on marriage and family held this November 17-19.

“I am willing to go anywhere, when asked, to bear witness to what we as evangelical Protestants believe about marriage and the gospel, especially in times in which marriage is culturally imperiled,” wrore Moore on why he’s going to the Vatican despite his disagreements with the Pope.

“I can hardly criticize from across the Tiber and then refuse to talk, when invited, about these matters,” he continued. “That’s especially the case when the American bishops have been resolute in standing with us, despite our real differences, on questions of religious liberty and the future of the family.”

Prolific Bible scholar N. T. Wright, the subject of CT’s April cover story, has also been invited. Wright and Moore will speak on the same panel on the gathering’s second day. Warren will give a 30-minute presentation later that afternoon.

Two other Anglican leaders—the United Kingdom’s Michael Nazir-Ali and Nigeria’s Nicholas Okoh—are also among the 32 speakers, as are Boston Pentecostal leader Jacqueline C. Rivers and Anabaptist leader Johann Christoph Arnold. Mormon, Jewish, Muslim, and Sikh leaders have also been invited.

The colloquium’s stated goal:

The Complementarity of Man and Woman: An International Colloquium is a gathering of leaders and scholars from many religions across the globe, to examine and propose anew the beauty of the relationship between the man and the woman, in order to support and reinvigorate marriage and family life for the flourishing of human society.

Witnesses will draw from
the wisdom of their religious tradition and cultural experience as they attest to the power and vitality of the complementary union of man and woman. It is hoped that the colloquium be a catalyst for creative language and projects, as well as for global solidarity, in the work
of strengthening the nuptial relationship, both for the good of the spouses themselves and for the good of all who depend upon them.

The Pope has increasingly been interacting with a number of notable Protestants, including Geoff Tunnicliffe and Brian Stiller of the World Evangelical Alliance, pastor Joel Osteen, televangelists Kenneth Copeland and James Robison, members of the Green family (founders of Hobby Lobby), and Westmont College president Gayle Beebe. “We are brothers,” Francis told a gathering of Pentecostal leaders at a Copeland conference.

In September, in anticipation of last month’s synod on the family, Warren and nearly 50 other Christian conservative intellectuals and church leaders signed an open letter urging the Pope to fight for marriage in the face of challenges like pornography, divorce, and cohabitation.

Following Francis’s ascent to the papacy, Moore told CT that he admired the Catholic leader’s track record of living among the poor and caring for social outcasts. “I pray that his example spurs evangelicals like me to remember our mandate to love the least of these, the hurting and the vulnerable, the brothers and sisters of our Lord,” he said.

Moore’s comment was part of CT’s report on why Francis excites (most) evangelical leaders. Evangelist Luis Palau described Francis to CT as a personal friend and a “very Bible-centered” and “very Jesus Christ-centered man.” Argentine evangelicals saw Francis’s selection as an “answer to our prayers.”   … Read more

The Word of God

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12

Read: Isaiah 40:6-8

40:6 The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:

40:7 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.

40:8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR : 2 KINGS 3:1-4:37 and PROVERBS 21:1-15

Message

The word of God is God communicating with us and the word of God is God revealed to us. In it we see His nature and His character. The word of God is forever settled in heaven. The word of God is a living spirit (John 6:63). The word of God reveals the mind of God and therefore His will to us. What can man do without the word of God? Nothing! It is the word of God that gives us the means of salvation from sin. It confronts us with the reality of our fallen state, the doom of sinners and the way out through the love and mercy of God. It is the same word that serves as our compass on our journey to Heaven (Acts 20:32).The word of God also reveals God’s provision for our successful and victorious living here on earth, and how to harness His promises in our lives. What would we do without the word of God? Any congregation of God’s people that give prominence to the word of God, teaching and preaching it, and patterning their lives according to it will be blessed. But those that do otherwise are treading on very dangerous grounds.

“The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass. The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”
Isaiah 40:7-8
The word of God will outlast anyone. Though heaven and earth shall pass away, the word of God shall not pass away (Matthew 24:35). What should your attitude towards the word of God be? The word itself reveals this: “Tremble at God’s word” (Isaiah 66:2). This directs God’s attention to you for favour and victory (Isaiah 66:5). You are to uphold the word of God in your life irrespective of circumstances. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego upheld the word of God even at the point of death, and God did not disappoint them. You are to feed your mind the word of God. This will renew your mind to think the way God thinks and will restrain you from sin (Psalm 119:11). The word of God coming out prophetically from the mouth of God’s anointed servants is as powerful as the written word. The story of the official in Samaria, who derided the word of God from the mouth of Elisha attests to this. He paid for it with his life (2 Kings 7:18-20). I encourage you to tremble indeed at God’s word; study it, meditate on it, obey it and you will prosper (James 1:25).

Action Point:

Prayerfully improve on your reading, studying, meditating and memorising of God’s word.

Football Player Penalized For Saying Prayers

A Florida high school football player was penalized for kneeling for a quick prayer in the end zone after scoring a touchdown.

According to The Blaze, Sam Turner, a senior at Fort Myers High School, was penalized for offering a word of thanks to the Lord and pointing his finger in the air. An official gave Turner’s team a 15-year penalty for “unsportsmanlike” conduct.

“I said ‘thank you, God, for this talent you’ve blessed me with,’” Turner told the News-Press. Turner explained that he also remembered JoJo Brunson in his prayer, a student who was killed in a drive-by shooting last year.

Turner says he’s mostly received support following the incident.

“I use my faith as a platform for my talents. My teammates are giving my tons of support,” he said. “They all know I’m strong believer, even though it cost us 15 yards.”

The National Federation of State High School Associations’ rules allows an official to penalize a player who behaves in such a way that causes attention on him or herself.

National Football League policy, however, allows such action as long as the player is exercising his faith.

“I saw the flag and I was so confused at first. I was like, ‘Are you seriously flagging me right now? What did I do wrong?’” he said. “Eventually the ref came up and talked to me and said I was trying to bring attention to myself and I was trying to explain to him that that wasn’t the case at all. I wasn’t trying to bring attention to myself I was just trying to thank God.”

Fort Myers High School won the game, 49-0.
