ISIS release video showing lan Henning beheaded: David Cameron vows to bring killers to justice

Christianity Today – Humanitarian Alan Henning has been beheaded by terrorist group ISIS, confirmed by another video purporting to show the grisly footage which emerged online Friday.

ISIS released another short video showing the beheading of British Aid worker Henning. In what has become a familiar sight, the victim is dressed in a bright orange jumpsuit with his captors behind him, covered up and waving a knife around.

Prior to the beheading, Henning speaks to the camera about the British Parliament’s decision to join America in the bombing campaign against ISIS.

After the brutal beheading, the camera shifts to American Peter Kassig, who ISIS threatens to kill next.

Henning was part of a group of volunteers that traveled to Syria in December 2013 to help bring food and water to those affected by the civil war. He was captured by masked gunmen just after Christmas.

After the video went live, Prime Minister David Cameron vowed to bring the killers to justice and stated: “The brutal murder of Alan Henning by ISIL shows just how barbaric and repulsive these terrorists are. Alan had gone to Syria to help get aid to people of all faiths in their hour of need. The fact that he was taken hostage when trying to help others and now murdered demonstrates that there are no limits to the depravity of these ISIL terrorists.”

The White House also released a statement after Henning’s death: “Mr. Henning worked to help improve the lives of the Syrian people and his death is a great loss for them, for his family and the people of the United Kingdom.

“Standing together with our UK friends and allies, we will work to bring the perpetrators of Alan’s murder — as well as the murders of Jim Foley, Steven Sotloff and David Haines — to justice. Standing together with a broad coalition of allies and partners, we will continue taking decisive action to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIL.”

Joel and Victoria Osteen Say New SiriusXM Radio Station will Show Different Side of Them

Next week, Joel and Victoria Osteen will launch their SiriusXM radio station. The megachurch pastors of Lakewood Church say that the radio station will show a different side of them.
The BLAZE reports that Joel and Victoria will have separate talk shows that feature sermons, as well as an opportunity for the public to interact with the celebrity pastors through candid conversations with callers. The Osteens will not have everything scripted and believe that the radio station will be an opportunity to show the public that they are normal people.
Joel Osteen said, “It’s nice that it’s a different side of us, because most of our other stuff is very prepared. I hope they’ll get a chance to see just that [we’re] real and that there’s humor and fun.”
Victoria Osteen said, “This is an opportunity that came and it’s a stretch. It’s something that we haven’t done before and I hope it says something to [show] people that we are real.”
Joel Osteen’s talk show premieres Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. ET and will continue to air at the same time every Monday. Victoria’s first show is Oct. 8 at 12 p.m. ET and will be aired every Wednesday.
Businessman and reality TV star Donald Trump called the Osteens during Monday’s launch event to discuss his faith and to offer kind words and well wishes for the station. Hear what he had to say below:

With the rise of the Islamic State terror group and a plethora of negative headlines, Osteen said that he’s hoping his radio outfit can help listeners turn toward their faith and trust more fervently in God.

Seven Reasons Why We Should Not Give Up on Established Churches

If you truly believe that established churches have no hope, there is no reason to read this post. I am not, however, among those pessimists.

I am an obnoxious optimist about our churches.

Excited about This Book

What motivated me to write this post was a new book by my son, Sam Rainer: Obstacles in the Established Church. All familial prejudice aside, I am greatly heartened to read a work by a 30-something pastor about what we used to call “traditional churches.”

While the title caught my eye, the subtitle gave me hope: How Leaders Overcome Them. It is indeed a book of hope.

Defining an Established Church

Sam offered this definition of the established church: “An established church has a longstanding culture. The histories of these churches include generations of families. Established churches have enduring programs, staff positions, and expectations. In these churches tradition is cherished and change comes more slowly.”

It is perhaps that last sentence that captures the essence of frustration for leaders in these congregations: “In these churches tradition is cherished and change comes more slowly.”

Seven Reasons Not to Give Up

So why should we not give up on established churches? Building on the content of Sam’s book, I offer seven of many reasons.

  1. God is still at work in many of these churches. I wish you were privy to all the great stories of church revitalization that come to me. You would see great hope for these churches.
  2. Many pastors and other staff are still being called to established churches. God’s true calling does not take place unless He has a plan for these congregations.
  3. There are too many of these churches to give up. Depending on the definition you use, there are around 300,000 of these churches in the U. S. alone. We can’t abandon all of these churches.
  4. We need the facilities of these churches. Buildings are expensive. Land is scarce in many areas. Zoning restrictions are onerous in other locations. Either through revitalization or merger, we need to keep these billions of dollars in land and facilities for God’s work.
  5. There is a renewed emphasis in church revitalization. God is stirring the hearts of many for a reason.
  6. Churches and Christians are messy. If you have any doubt, read again 1 Corinthians. It’s always been that way. God does not give up on His people. We must not give up on His churches.
  7. Church membership is being taken more seriously. One of the struggles in many churches has been a weak view of church membership. Many churches expect nothing, and that’s exactly what they get. I am seeing hopeful signs of healthier expectations of members.

 A Hopeful Future

I don’t have my metaphorical head in the sand. I know there are serious issues in many churches. But it’s not time to give up on the established church.

Sam said it well when I asked him why he wrote Obstacles in the Established Church: “Many established churches have common obstacles preventing health and growth. I wrote the book to encourage church leaders that these obstacles are not insurmountable. Since the majority of churches in North America are established, we must care about these congregations. God does not give up on them; neither should we.”

Well said, Sam. Well said.

Ukraine: Christians Threatened with Firing Squads, Pastors Held Hostage

Reports are surfacing that rebels are threatening churches, interrupting services and even holding pastors hostage in eastern Ukraine.
According to reports, rebels broke a ceasefire and attacked Donetsk airport this week. Thursday, a Red Cross aid worker was killed by shelling in Donetsk.
Last week, a Seventh Day Adventist minister was abducted during a church service by pro-Russian gunmen.
The Institute for Religious Freedom, which is based in Kiev, has reported several incidents of religious persecution that happened over the summer, including the capture of four men from Transfiguration Evangelical Church in Donetsk. One man escaped and said the others had been tortured and shot to death.
Other churches have reported that their buildings have been looted and taken over by pro-Russian forces.
“They ordered us to take the furniture and get out, insisting that these churches are sects and they will be destroyed. The people in the building were threatened with a firing squad if they made a fuss about the incident,” pastor Segiv Kosiak told IRF about the taking of the Word of Life Evangelical Church.

Ex Porn Addict and Minister: 5 Reasons Pastors Are More Vulnerable to Sexual Temptation

Pastors are not immune to sexual temptation, in fact, their positions as ministers place them right in the path of danger, says Christian writer Jeff Fisher.

Fisher knows this topic all too well as his former pornography addiction caused him to lose his ministry position at one point. In a blog post written for Church Leaders, Fisher notes five reasons pastors are much more vulnerable than the average Christian to sexual temptation, beginning with the fact that they are in a place of power.

“The pastor is an authority, he is looked up to, he is on stage and he is usually highly regarded. Broken people with damaged lives come regularly to talk with the minister, many of them desperate for a word or attention,” Fisher says.

He also notes that most pastors are often isolated and unaccountable for their actions as many of them tend to spend time alone outside of their ministry setting.

Fisher says this is especially true for small church ministers who are often the only staff member as they tend not to have church leaders asking them about their whereabouts.

Furthermore, he notes that many pastors tend to rarely have protection or policies in place to safeguard them from temptation.

Texas Law Requiring Abortion-Performing Doctor to Have Hospital Privileges Approved by Court

Christian Headlines  reports – A federal appeals court has upheld a law that Republican Gov. Rick Perry installed last year. Thursday the U.S. 5th Circuit Court in New Orleans granted permission to enforce House Bill 2 (HB2) that requires abortion facilities to follow the same standards as other Ambulatory Surgical Centers in the state, according to LifeNews.com.

Essentially the law mandates abortionists have admitting privileges at a local hospital. HB2 also bans late-term abortions.

The Associated Press reports the decision “would effectively close all but seven abortion facilities in America’s second-most populous state.”

The American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists applauds the recent decision by the panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court in New Orleans to uphold the laws of the State of Texas. AAPLOG leaders maintain the decision allows Texas to protect women from unsafe abortion clinics that do not meet the minimum health and safety standards set by the State of Texas.

“It is telling that the President and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights wants to spin this issue as abortion rights, when clearly at issue is the health and safety of the women of Texas,” said AAPLOG Executive Director Donna Harrison, M.D., ObGyn. “This is not about abortion rights. The State of Texas is not taking away or infringing upon the rights of women to get an abortion. The State of Texas is ensuring that the rights of women to have safe medical care are upheld. At the end of the day, it is the clinics that refuse to operate according to these medical guidelines that are restricting women’s access to abortion. It’s not the State of Texas. The State of Texas is working to protect women from practitioners such as Kermit Gosnell.”

GOD TV co-founder Rory Alec, Steps Down

GOD TV co-founder Rory Alec has announced he is stepping down from leadership of the network after a “moral failure” in relation to his marriage.

He relinquishes his roles as chairman and chief executive with immediate effect, the network said in a statement on Thursday.

Mr Alec co-founded the network with his wife Wendy, its current director of television. She will continue to lead the network together with the senior management team.

In a statement, Mr Alec spoke of his regret but did not elaborate further on his failure.

“After 20 years of service, I have had a moral failure this year,” he said.

“For this reason, I am stepping down. Please forgive me for the disappointment I’ve caused, but I know your eyes are on Jesus who is the author and finisher of your faith and not on me, an imperfect man.

“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm my season with GOD TV is over for now.”

Mrs Alec said she would comment “with transparency and authenticity” on the situation on October 8, when she makes an appearance at GOD TV’s Jerusalem studio to host a series of live Revival Alert broadcasts.

The network’s statement was posted to its Facebook page, where the reaction from followers was sympathetic.

“Rory and Wendy we stand with you in prayer for restoration, reconciliation and forgiveness!” wrote Victoria Webster-West. “Rory thank you for stepping down in honesty during this time of God’s dealing with your heart. Wendy all of our love and support. You’ve both done so much to build God’s kingdom and our prayers cover you! Love of the Lord will win!!”

Another Facebook fan, Linda Ford wrote: “So sorry for you both. We are all vulnerable to temptation, but there is forgiveness and restoration? This is my prayer for you both and may you both know the love, comfort and Shalom peace of The Lord Jesus at this very sad and difficult time.”

Another wrote: “God’s Grace covers a multitude of sins – we are made of flesh and we fail but God’s grace heals all!”
