HOW CHURCH ATTENDANCE AFFECTS ATTITUDES TOWARD THE NATION ISREAL

What role does religion play in American attitudes towards Israel? An analysis by Frank Newport, the editor-in-chief of Gallup Inc., reviews 14 annual Gallup polls from 2001 to 2014 in which respondents answer the same question, “In the Middle East situation, are your sympathies more with the Israelis or more with the Palestinians?” The numbers offer insights different from what one might expect.

The study starts with two basic facts: First, looking at the whole sample of about 14,000 American adults, 59 percent answer that they have more sympathy for Israelis and 16 percent say they have more sympathy for Palestinians, a ratio of almost 4-to-1. Second, Newport finds that “Religious Americans are significantly more likely than less religious Americans to be sympathetic to the Israelis,” confirming what common sense already tells us.

That said, his numbers contain several noteworthy subtleties:

A near-linear relationship exists between church attendance and outlook: 66 percent of weekly or almost-weekly church goers favor Israel, as do 58 percent of monthly and seldom church-goers and 46 percent of never church-goers. Conversely, sympathy toward the Palestinians is also near linear: 13 percent, 16 percent, and 23 percent, respectively.
In both cases, any church attendance at all makes Christians more alike to each other vs. those who never attend, a difference that has somewhat widened recently.
When one looks at religious groups, Jews, Mormons, and non-Catholic Christians are the most pro-Israel; Catholics match the national average; other religious groups and the non-religious are the least pro-Israel. Click here to view graphs.
Political views and religiosity both influence Americans’ view – but as independent variables.
Political views matter more than religiosity: “nonreligious Republicans are more likely to sympathize with Israelis than highly religious Democrats.”
Church attendance has more of an impact on Republican views than on Democratic ones.
Israel brings together two very politically dissimilar groups, church-attending Christian Republicans and Jewish Democrats.

Some reflections on these figures:

(1) Although religiosity helps explain the difference between the United States and Europe, politics has more importance: that even irreligious Americans favor Israel 2-to-1 marks them as very different from their European counterparts.

(2) Given the prominence of Jewish anti-Zionists in the academy, the media, and in Hollywood, the 93-to-2 Jewish support for Israel comes as a surprise, suggesting that the most accomplished and articulate Jews tend to be disproportionately hostile to Israel. Perhaps this is their way of fitting into the leftist institutions where they work and hope to succeed?

(3) One wishes the “Protestant” category provided further details on the various denominations. How much do the mainline churches differ from the evangelical ones? Do the adherents of anti-Israel churches follow their leadership in this regard? Are there important changes over time? Gallup should inform us about this in the future.

(4) Muslims are lumped in with other non-Christians but have a unique profile. In Canada, whose Muslim population differs substantially from the American one, pro-Israel Muslims number about 20 percent. I estimate that pro-Israel American Muslims number half that percentage, or less. Also of note: religiosity among Muslims has the opposite influence than among Christians, making them less pro-Israel.
In conclusion, Israel benefits from the fact that Americans remain in large part a religious people. But declining religiosity bodes ill for the Jewish state.

SAN DIEGO MEGACHURCH PASTOR APPOINTED AS THE PRESIDENT OF HISPANIC MEGA CHURCH ASSOCIATION

The senior pastor of the largest Latino-led church in San Diego has been named president of The Hispanic Mega Church Association, where he will work to bring the country’s largest Hispanic congregations together.

One of the Fastest Growing Churches in US to Host Pastors Conference With Carl Lentz, Morris Cerullo, Samuel Rodriguez

“For every nationality, every demographic and every social circle, today is the dawn of a new day. And our responsibility as the local church is to lead this shift in power and influence by leading our families, communities and nation to experience a Heart Revolution,” de la Mora said in a statement.

The Hispanic Mega Church Association is a division of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference/Conela, which represents about 500,000 churches throughout the U.S. and Latin America.

De la Mora’s experience as pastor of Cornerstone Church has placed him in position to lead the HMCA as he has built a multiethnic church that is relevant in its approach to reaching thousands of individuals, without compromising the gospel.

“Sergio De La Mora embodies the qualities of the 21st century bi-cultural, bi-lingual leader with the ability to network and amplify the voices of America’s Hispanic multi-ethnic mega church pastors,” said Dr. Samuel Rodriguez, president of NHCLC/Conela.

De la Mora’s multi-campus church has been recognized by Outreach Magazine as one of the fastest-growing churches in the country, with a weekly attendance of over 4,000. However, de la Mora, a second generation Mexican-American, says it is the church’s message, not demographic, that attracts people to the church’s several campuses throughout Southern California and Mexico.

“Because God is raising us second generation Latinos, He’s breaking rules by using people like us. I believe that God is saying to America, ‘give me permission to use people who you wouldn’t think I can use,” de la Mora, told The Christian Post in a previous interview. “I think the next movement of God is going to be done by people who allow God to use them to break rules so people’s image of God is enlarged.”

Aside from leading Cornerstone, de la Mora also runs the Turning the Hearts Center aimed to meet the needs of the emerging Latino Christian community. The non-profit organization is designed to empower youth and families and restore family unity and self-sufficiency through a variety of programs, seminars and support resources.

He also hosts an annual Heart Revolution Conference that brings together renowned church leaders with the purpose to revolutionize the hearts of the next generation. The conference has reached thousands of individuals and featured various Christian speakers and musicians from throughout the world since 2008.

Dela Mora is author of The Heart Revolution: Releasing the Power to Live from the Inside Out and is currently working on another book, The God Who Breaks The Rules.

How Britain Became a Global Exporter of Terrorism

LONDON – No one who has been paying attention to the growth of radical Islam in Britain should have been surprised that the terrorist who stood over murdered American journalist James Foley had a London accent.

Over a thousand British Muslims are now fighting for the Islamic State, also known as ISIS. And more are joining every day.

“The key thing to realize about British fighters in Syria is they’re not there to take a back seat role. They are very much at the forefront of this conflict,” Shiraz Maher, an expert at the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation, said.

Exporter of Terror

Britain is now a major exporter of terrorists, the result of multiculturalism. There have been warning signs for years.

Eight years ago, CBN News showed viewers Muslims protesting in London against the Mohammed cartoons and chanting “Jihad is on its way.”

Today, Britain has functioning Sharia courts and Sharia patrols enforcing Islamic law on the streets.

US cardinal supports St Patrick’s Day parade after lifting of gay ban

Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York said he continues to support the city’s St Patrick’s Day Parade Committee after it lifted a ban prohibiting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender groups from marching openly in the annual event.

The cardinal, who will be the grand marshal of the 254th St Patrick’s Day parade next March, said in a statement on September 3 that neither he nor his predecessors determined who could or could not march in the parade.

He said he has “always appreciated the cooperation of parade organisers in keeping the parade close to its Catholic heritage”.

“My predecessors and I have always left decisions on who would march to the organisers of the individual parades,” the cardinal’s statement said.

“As I do each year, I look forward to celebrating Mass in honour of St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland and the patron saint of this archdiocese, to begin the feast, and pray that the parade would continue to be a source of unity for all of us.”

The parade committee’s decision comes in an effort to defuse the controversy that arose prior to this year’s parade over the exclusion of gay banners in the annual celebration of Irish and Catholic heritage.

The ban led New York Mayor Bill de Blasio to refuse to march earlier this year. Guinness also withdrew its sponsorship.

The NBC television network, which has broadcast the parade for years, also was prepared to drop coverage of the event unless a compromise was reached to allow a group of the network’s gay employees to march under a banner identifying the organisation, Irish Central reported.

There was no immediate word on whether the decision would lead to a wider gay presence in the parade.

Ukrainian Church leader: West must help stop

A Ukrainian Church leader said Western governments need to use “all available means” to curb Russian military interference.

“Every right-thinking European should realise that what’s happening here has worldwide implications,” said Bishop Bohdan Dzyurakh, secretary-general of the Ukrainian Catholic Synod of Bishops. “Besides violating all international law, (Russian President Vladimir) Putin is also showing the kind of security the world can expect from a nuclear-armed Russia. He will go as far as he’s allowed to go.”

In a September 4 interview with Catholic News Service, Bishop Dzyurakh said Putin and Russia had “violated all norms of international security.” He said that, under a 1994 memorandum, Russian, US and British leaders had promised to respect and refrain from using force against the “independence, sovereignty and existing borders” of Ukraine.

He said it was time the international community stopped “imagining it can talk to this aggressor and lead him to peace, and began using all available means to bar him.”

“Innocent civilians are dying here every day, and we still hope Western governments will take their obligations seriously, and go beyond merely expressing concern and displeasure,” he said.

The same day the bishop spoke, Nato leaders met in Wales and criticised Russia for further destabilising Ukraine, where at least 2,600 people have died in fighting between government and rebel forces since April.

Bishop Dzyurakh said Catholic life was now “practically paralysed” in rebel-controlled areas, where Church members were preoccupied “only with surviving the terrible conditions.”

He added that separatists in Donetsk had claimed to “have the addresses of all faithful and clergy” of the Ukrainian Catholic Church and said many Catholics had gone into hiding.

Church sources told CNS a Catholic convent belonging to the Immaculate Conception order had been seized by separatists in Donetsk, where Ukrainian Catholic Archbishop Stepan Meniok had also been thrown out of his residence.

They added that a local Catholic priest had been “imprisoned and tortured” by pro-Russian fighters, while another was being hunted because he backed the Kiev government.

Bishop Dzyurakh said he believed the separatist campaign in eastern Ukraine had been orchestrated from the start by Russia’s special services and now had to be backed with direct Russian intervention because of the success of Ukraine’s counter-insurgency. He added that Putin claimed to be defending the “Russian-speaking civilian population” of eastern Ukraine, but had in reality destroyed it by wrecking the region’s infrastructure.

“This merely shows he isn’t concerned for the welfare of these people — only for his own neo-imperialist ambitions,” the bishop said.

“Unfortunately, the Western sanctions policy isn’t effective. As a Ukrainian citizen, I think other means must be used, not excluding military action, to stop this aggression, defend our nation and restore the international order Putin is destroying. By helping us in this way, the international community will be helping itself.”

Earlier, a bishop from Ukraine’s smaller Latin-rite Catholic Church told Vatican Radio that some of his church’s members had been forced to flee rebel-held areas, making Catholic life impossible.

Poland’s Catholic bishops said they believed their country was now also threatened by events in neighboring Ukraine.

“These events violate the right of nations to choose their own path and are causing justified concern about our own homeland’s future,” the Polish diocesan bishops said in an August 31 statement marking 75 years since the outbreak of World War II. “We appeal for effective action to stop the tragedy of this war through peaceful means.”

Pope Francis to publicly celebrate 20 marriages, in rare move

Vatican City, Sep 5, 2014 / 05:42 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The Vatican has released the schedule of Pope Francis’ main liturgical celebrations for the month of September, during which he will publicly perform the marriage of 20 couples.

September brings a full slate of activities for the pontiff, including the commemoration of lives lost in WWI, an audience with elderly, a day trip to Albania and the celebration of the Sacrament of Marriage with couples in St. Peter’s Basilica.

On Saturday, Sept. 13, Pope Francis will travel to the Northern Italian region of Friuli-Venezia- Giulia, where he will visit the famous World War I military cemetery in Redipuglia and pay homage to the 100 thousand soldiers who are buried there by celebrating a solemn Mass.

The largest of its kind, the memorial is composed of a large stone staircase and is known for its vast size. It was inaugurated in 1938 following 3 years of construction.

Sept. 14, the next day, Pope Francis will celebrate Mass in St. Peter’s basilica for the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, during which he will witness the Sacrament of Marriage of 20 couples.

He will be the first pontiff to perform public weddings since St. John Paul II in 1994 in Mexico for the World Day of Families.

The event is significant as popes don’t usually celebrate weddings in public. Pope Francis has also decided to organize the event in direct collaboration with diocese of Rome rather than Pontifical Council for Families, as is usually done, and it is expected that he will perform more in the future.

On Sept. 21 the Bishop of Rome will make a one-day trip to Albania, during which he is slated to meet with the country’s president, civil authorities, interreligious leaders, priests, religious and lay movements of the diocese, as well as children from their the “Centro Betania,” or “Bethany Center” and representatives from other charitable institutions.

Announced earlier this summer, the trip marks the second time a Roman Pontiff will visit the country, the first being Pope Saint John Paul II in 1993.

The next week, on Sept. 28, the Pope will close the month by meeting with elderly and grandparents in St. Peter’s Square, celebrating a Mass for them.

Entitled “The Blessing of a Long Life,” the event will begin when the square opens at 7:30 a.m., with the official celebration beginning at 9 a.m. The day will culminate with an audience and Mass at 10:30 presided over by Pope Francis.

As the first-ever official papal audience of its kind, the event is being organized by the Pontifical Council for the Family, and is set to explore the vocation of the elderly in a society whose life span is extending.

Mr. President, Stop the Christian Slaughter! – Eddie Hyatt of Revive America

“Deliver those who are drawn toward death, and hold back those stumbling to the slaughter. If you say, ‘Surely we did not know this,’ does not He who weighs the hearts consider it? He who keeps your soul, does He not know it? And will He not render to each man according to his deeds?” (Prov. 24:11-12).

Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do so (Prov. 3:27).

Dear Mr. President,

Your tepid response to the genocidal slaughter of Christians in Iraq and Syria is frightening. Your hesitancy and tentativeness in formulating a clear strategy to end this butchery of innocent people is alarming. Mr. President, with all due respect for you and the office you occupy, you have a moral responsibility before God to stop the slaughter of innocent men, women and children by the ISIS fanatics in the Middle East.

The power that comes with the presidency is not about privilege; it is about responsibility. God places kings, prime ministers and presidents in positions of power to resist the evil in this world and rescue those who are abused and victimized by evil. God will hold you accountable for how you use the power with which you were entrusted by the American people.

Romans 13:1-5 makes it clear that God expects government officials to use the power at their disposal to instill fear and terror in those who are evil. Verse 4 goes so far as to call the one in your position an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. Mr. President, you have a moral obligation from God to use the power at your disposal to stop the ISIS evil—to put an end to their genocidal crucifixions and beheadings of innocent men, women and children.

I have no question that a strategic operation to rescue the poor people who are being slaughtered by ISIS would have the approval of heaven and the majority of the American people. I and millions of others would pray for the quick success of such an operation, which would not only rescue thousands from the current genocide, but would stop ISIS from carrying out plans to attack the American homeland.

I realize that Washington, D.C., runs on sleazy politics on both sides of the political aisle, but this cannot be a decision based on political calculations. Politics must be set aside. This is a decision that must be made based on a moral imperative to rescue those being led away for slaughter. It is a decision that must be made with more concern for what God thinks than what politicians, lobbyists and the media think. I pray you have the courage to make such a decision.

Mr. President, there comes a time in everyone’s life when they must choose between what is right, and what is comfortable and politically convenient. That time has come to Washington, D.C. I pray that you and your colleagues, both Democratic and Republican, will have the moral courage to stand for truth, choose what is right, and use the power at your disposal to stop the genocidal rape and slaughter of innocent people.

My prayers and best wishes are with you.

Sincerely,
Eddie L. Hyatt

New Iraqi Christian: ISIS Wickedness a Turn off to Islam

ZAKHO, Iraq — Northern Iraq is facing a refugee crisis, with an estimated 182,000 Yazidis fleeing to Kurdistan to escape the brutal Islamic State (ISIS) army. Many have sought refuge in Kurdish cities, dwelling in abandoned office buildings.

Just behind the northern Iraqi city of Zakho are the mountains that lead to Turkey, which is very close, just several kilometers away. Many of the Yazidis who have come to Zakho say they prefer to go to Turkey. That’s because they can no longer live with Muslim Arabs.

One Yazidi leader told CBN News hundreds of Muslim neighbors turned against his people when Islamic State fighters arrived in Sinjar.

“These Arabic tribes, they joined them,” Faris Elias Kholo told CBN News.

“They took away our females, children, old men, everything,” he continued. “Even if we get back our homes, we cannot live with the Arabs because they usually try to persecute us.”

One refugee told CBN News he spent eight days trapped on Sinjar Mountain. He’s a recent Christian convert so we’re calling him “Shamo” to protect his identity.

Shamo says he witnessed terrorists kill 170 Yazidi men, then take their wives and daughters away to be sold or used as sex slaves.

He says he wants nothing to do with Islam because of ISIS and the atrocities committed by Muslims he once considered friends.

The newly converted Yazidi Christian says he was attracted to Christianity because of the kindness and generosity of Christians.

“I can say only one word about the difference between Islam and Christianity. The difference is between earth and sky and heaven,” Shamo told CBN News. “We are thinking everyday why we are not behaving like the Christians…We really saw a real humanity in their life.”

Feeling betrayed by Arab Muslims, the Yazidi refugees are looking to the Kurds and Christians for help.

CBN Disaster Relief is on the ground, seeking to bring them help and hope.

“We are here to show that you have not been abandoned,” Brian Scott, with

“Please, either if you can protect us, provide us an international protection, or take us out of the country because we don’t want to give our women and our children anymore,” he appealed. “And please pray for the Yazidi people to come to Christ just like me.”

CBN News witnessed firsthand changed hearts and lives as CBN partners provide blankets and clean water to sustain life and living water for all eternity.

“And we do these things in the name of Jesus Christ,” Scott said.
