A Charismatic Church Leader Dies in Apparent Suicide

An Atlanta-area pastor who led a network of charismatic churches was found dead at his home Monday of what sources tell Charisma News was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Bishop David Huskins had acknowledged suffering from heart-related health problems and recently talked of taking time off.

Polk County Police say they found the body of Huskins inside his home in the Meadow Lakes community late Monday afternoon, according to a report on WGAA-AM radio in Atlanta. He was pronounced dead on the scene. According to Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd, detectives said there was no foul play involved in the incident, but they declined elaboration about the cause of death.

A Christian radio station in Atlanta, Joy105.com, reported Wednesday that the cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Emails and tweets among a number of pastors and charismatic leaders who knew Huskins said the same thing, but this could not be independently confirmed.

Huskins founded the Cedar Lake Christian Center in Cedartown near Atlanta and served as its senior pastor. He was also the presiding bishop of the International Communion of Charismatic Churches. He hosted a weekly radio program and made many appearances on Christian television.

Huskins also had a close association with Bishop Mark Chironna, senior pastor of an Orlando, Florida-area church, Church on the Living Edge. A representative said Chironna was not available for comment Wednesday but acknowledged that Huskins had spoken at the church in the suburban community of Longwood in the past.

According to a statement on Huskins’ Facebook page: “Our hearts are deeply saddened to share with you that our Bishop, David Huskins, has joined the great cloud of witnesses this afternoon We will have more information later that will be posted here. Please pray for his boys and the rest of the family, and our church family as we grieve the passing of one of the greatest servants we have ever known.”

Polk County police referred inquiries to Chief Dodd, who was not immediately available for comment on Wednesday.

Early last month, Huskins sent a long email to his congregation and friends saying he needed to take some time off to deal with health problems.

“It has been almost 20 years ago since I had open-heart surgery to repair a hole in my heart that had become critical,” Huskins wrote on July 10. “That started a series of mostly ignored warnings to take care of my heart health. Then in November, I had a mild heart attack (if there is such a thing) and that put me on a path to great introspection of all the areas of my life I had not properly dealt with. …

“While I am grateful for all the Lord has allowed me to do, I knew sometimes I had let ministry be a substitute for God. I felt Him dealing with me to let go of areas and delegate and release and spend more time with Him and with people not just always in a pulpit. I had started that process much earlier with seeking to place others in charge of the church and daily duties but still had not relinquished the active roles.

“Then over the past few weeks I experienced congestive heart failure twice, which forced the cancellation of our annual conference, and now I have been told medically I am at the point of complete exhaustion while still dealing with chronic congestive heart failure. After three nights in I C U and another two-night regular hospital stay along with several follow-up heart procedures and this past week a Transient Ischemic Attack (minor stroke) and the adaptations of all the medicines … and the on-going recovery process and having been admitted to bed rest, I am now forced to make some significant and important changes immediately.

How to Defeat the Insidious Spirit of Jezebel

By Jennifer

Jezebel was a Phoenician princess who married Ahab, king of Israel. Her father was Ethbaal, king and high priest of the Sidonians. Queen Jezebel introduced Baal worship into Israel. By acquiescing to her idolatry, King Ahab broke the first two commandments:

“You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them” (Ex. 20:3–5).

Baal worship gives us clues as to the workings of Jezebel. The name Baal means “lord” or “possessor.” According to the Dake Annotated Reference Bible, Baal was the sun-god of Phoenicia, and the supreme deity among the Canaanites and various other pagan nations. His full title is Baal-Shemaim, which means “lord of heaven.” In Greek mythology, Baal is the equivalent of Zeus.

The Canaanites, who were Baal worshipers, participated in sex worship, fertility rites, religious prostitution and human sacrifice—all to pacify the gods. Fast-forward 54 chapters in the Bible and you find the false prophetess Jezebel who teaches and seduces God’s servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols. Can you see the stage being set for idolatry and sexual immorality in Jezebel’s world? Where Jezebel is pulling the strings, you will find idolatry and sexual immorality behind the curtain.

Just how sinister is the Jezebel spirit? Easton’s Bible Dictionary says,”Jezebel has stamped her name on history as the representative of all that is designing, crafty, malicious, revengeful and cruel. She is the first great instigator of persecution against the saints of God. Guided by no principle, restrained by no fear of either God or man, passionate in her attachment to her heathen worship, she spared no pains to maintain idolatry around her in all its splendor.”

Matthew Henry’s Commentary calls Jezebel a “zealous idolater, extremely imperious and malicious in her natural temper, addicted to witchcrafts and whoredoms, and every way vicious.”

Clearly, the spirit of Jezebel is interested in more than control and manipulation. We have to discern the deeper motive of this spirit if we ever hope to resist the temptations that will lead to the great falling away that Paul writes about in 2 Thess. 2:3. Jude urges us to contend earnestly for the faith once delivered to us, because “certain men have crept in unnoticed … ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ” (Jude 4).

The spirit of Jezebel is already running rampant in the world. Unfortunately, Jezebel is also running loose in the church and manifests in many local congregations without anyone ever seeing it—or confronting it.

If Jezebel is not a spirit of control and manipulation, what, then, does Jezebel look like? It looks just the way many books describe—on the surface. This is why so many are deceived. Jezebel is not merely a woman (or a man) with an overbearing personality or immature character. Jezebel’s influence runs much deeper than a desire to make someone a mouthpiece or puppet, or control the worship song list, or intimidate people from joining the inner circle in order to guard the leadership positions of those it controls.

Let’s be real. Some of those bossy, controlling people just need to read How to Win Friends and Influence People, and they would be fine. In other words, some saints just need good old-fashioned people skills.

So, think again: What does Jezebel look like in the church? Male or female, a Jezebelite—meaning a person who is influenced or dominated by this spirit—is a subtle seducer. And the key word is subtle. If Jezebel were obvious, no one would be fooled. A Jezebelite usually has a charismatic personality that draws people to other gods and away from Christ. Sometimes she succeeds in this idolatry by exalting pastors—puffing them up, putting them on a pedestal, giving them the honor God should have. She also does this by luring people to the things of the world and by introducing doctrines and principles that sound godly but come from the world’s system.

Likewise, a Jezebelite is quick to encourage sin. A woman confides in her, for instance, that she is having sex out of wedlock. The Jezebelite will assure the woman that it is OK if she is in love, easing the guilt and glossing over any godly conviction the woman might feel.

Please hear me: If we look only for control and manipulation, we will wrongly accuse people of “flowing in a Jezebel spirit,” while the principality wreaks havoc in the lives of people in the church.

Nine Current Mars Hill Pastors Tell Mark Driscoll To Step Down from All Ministry

Mars Hill Church responded publicly today to the leaked letter by nine of its 65 pastors.

“Despite the way the letter was sent out, please know we take its contents very seriously and will be taking the appropriate actions to honor Jesus, address the allegations and concerns, and work toward becoming a healthy church,” write 18 of the church’s lead pastors, including eight members of a newly appointed “board of elders” comprised of “trusted lead pastors … appointed to examine these charges.”

The letter asks church members to not “react in fear or anxiety,” “pronounce judgment before the time,” or “slander, gossip, or pick sides,” and instead asks them to “pray,” “seek wisdom,” “walk in godliness,” and “trust.” Mars Hill writes:

We must allow God to bring to light everything that he wants to have brought to the light. Just because someone brings forward allegations and concerns about a leader does not mean we should presume guilt. Any and all allegations and charges must be treated seriously, with impartiality, and without jumping to conclusions. Your elders will seek to honor Jesus as we proceed forward.

The 18 pastors note that “our ‘team’ is Jesus, not one group of elders or another,” and writes:

Pray that the elders will seek the Lord, be led by the Spirit, and proceed forward in confession, repentance, love, and godliness. Pray that the watching non-Christian world would not be given opportunity to discredit not only our church but the very gospel of Jesus. Pray that Jesus will be glorified through all of this.

Seventh-day Adventist church in Million dollar Suit over allegations of abuse by Youth Leader

Two men who say they were molested in the 1970s by a youth group leader in Oregon sued the Seventh-day Adventist church for $13.5 million on Tuesday, saying it had appointed a known pedophile to head the program and failed to remove him despite abuse allegations.

The lawsuit said that church officials appointed Leslie Bovee in 1972 to lead a Seventh-day Adventist youth group in Veneta, Oregon, even though they knew he had previously served two years in prison for molesting three boys.

They allowed Bovee to work with children in a co-ed church program for youths called Pathfinder because he repented and was re-baptised, according to the lawsuit filed in Oregon state court against the church’s national body.

Then in 1975, he was charged with sexually abusing a 12-year-old boy, but continued to lead the local Pathfinders group until he denounced his religious beliefs in 1979, the suit stated.

“This is a situation where they knew this guy had abused kids and they didn’t just let him in the church, they put him in charge of the youth program,” said attorney Peter Janci, one of two attorneys representing the plaintiffs.

Attorneys for the two plaintiffs, who said Bovee abused them in the Pathfinders program and who are now in their early 50s, described the lawsuit as part of a potentially growing legal battle against the church by people who say they were abused while involved in church activities.

The plaintiffs, identified only by their initials, filed their lawsuit after recently learning the church knew Bovee was a pedophile, said Steve Crew, the other attorney for the men.

They learned that in 2012, during a separate civil lawsuit filed on behalf of another victim in which they were called as witnesses, Crew said.

Richard Whittemore, an attorney for the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, said the organization has previously settled three other cases involving allegations of abuse by Bovee.

“The church is very aware of all of the issues and takes great pains to make sure this kind of behavior is not going to be repeated,” he said.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church has more than 18 million members worldwide, according to its website. In the past two decades, at least 525 people have lodged claims alleging child sexual abuse in the church, according to a report last year from its risk management organization.

Polygamy now effectively decriminalized in Utah

A judge has ruled that parts of Utah’s law banning polygamy are unconstitutional, effectively decriminalizing the practice, in a victory for the family that appears in the reality TV show ‘Sister Wives’ as reported by Daily Mail.

Kody Brown, who stars in the TLC reality show with his four wives, filed a lawsuit against the state after leaving Utah fearing prosecution after the programme aired.

Now a federal judge has issued his final ruling in the case that strikes down parts of the state’s anti-polygamy law.

U.S. District Judge Clark Waddoups has ruled that a provision of Utah’s law forbidding cohabitation violated the Browns’ freedom of religion.

He ruled in favour of the family in December and has now said that Mr Brown and his wives can collect attorneys’ fees.

It caps a landmark decision for the family that sued Utah in 2011 after a county prosecutor threatened to charge them following the premiere of the TV show.

The Emmy-nominated series had brought Mr Brown and his wives Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn to the attention of the authorities in their home town of Lehi, and police were considering a bigamy charge.

It wasn’t immediately clear how much the Browns could collect in attorneys’ fees.

Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes said in February he intended to appeal the ruling once it was made final.

On Wednesday, his office said in a written statement that it was reviewing the ruling and ‘will make final determination of whether or not to appeal one or more of the issues in the decision within the coming weeks.’

Meanwhile the Brown family attorney Jonathan Turley said they were overwhelmed and thankful for the ruling.

‘This was a historic ruling that I believe will stand the test of time,’ Mr Turley said.

He added the family would continue the legal battle to an appeals court or even the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary.

The Browns said they were forced to leave Utah for Las Vegas in 2011 in fear of prosecution, however Mr Turley said he didn’t know if they would return in the wake of the ruling.

‘The important thing is that they now can move back to Utah,’ he added explaining that the family has missed the state.

‘They now have the choice.’

Fundamentalist Mormon polygamists believe polygamy brings exaltation in heaven. The mainstream Mormon church strictly prohibits the practice.

The bigamy law in Utah is stricter than the laws in 49 other states – most of which prohibit people from having multiple marriage licenses.

Utah makes it illegal to even purport to be married to multiple partners or live together.

Ebola Kills Medical Doctor in Rivers State

• Dead Health personnel treated surviving primary contact

• Widow down with virus, quarantined

• 70 suspected patients under watch

• Total confirmed cases now 15, officials monitor 311

AT a time when most Nigerians are relieved that the country has only one confirmed case of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), a new death and 70 suspected cases were Thursday confirmed in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

At a press conference in Abuja Thursday, the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, said the dead person was a medical doctor who treated one of the surviving primary contacts with the index case, Mr. Patrick Sawyer, who defected to Port Harcourt.

According to Chukwu, the doctor’s widow is now down with the virus and has been placed under quarantine. Chukwu also said that 70 persons that had primary contact with the doctor, who died on August 22, 2014, the widow and the surviving primary contact had now been placed under surveillance.

The Guardian’s investigation revealed that the dead doctor, Dr. Ike Sam Enemuo, allegedly contracted the virus from an Ebola patient he treated secretly.

The reported death of Enemuo due to Ebola virus triggered panic yesterday at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) where his body was said to be in the morgue.

The Guardian learnt that the surviving primary contact that infected the dead Port Harcourt doctor was an official of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) who had contact with the late Sawyer during his infamous trip to Nigeria.

The surviving primary contact was said to be on the surveillance list. But he allegedly escaped surveillance officials in Lagos and headed to Port Harcourt where he approached a private doctor for treatment. The doctor in question allegedly did not report the case to the national management team, but successfully managed the case.

It is not clear if the doctor knew that the ECOWAS official was infected with Ebola before or during the treatment. But rigorous tests, according to government, confirm that the ECOWAS official had the virus but has recovered.

According to the minister, the total number of deaths from EVD in Nigeria, therefore, is now six, the index case (Sawyer), the four primary contacts who died in the isolation ward in Lagos, and a doctor who died in Port Harcourt whose blood sample tested positive after death. “Also, 70 persons have been placed under surveillance in Port Harcourt,” he said.

The suspected cases of the nurse who escaped to Enugu are likely going to be discharged today after spending the mandatory 21 days without symptoms.

Chukwu said the total number of cases of EVD cases so far reported in Nigeria stands at 15. A breakdown shows: The total number of cases treated at the isolation ward is 13; the total number of those discharged is seven; the total number of deaths from those treated in Lagos is five; and the total number currently under treatment is one, and the person is stable and improving clinically.

With regard to Enugu, the minister said all secondary contacts would be followed up till tomorrow (today) when they are all expected to be discharged from surveillance.

Chukwu said the Incident Management Committee had already deployed a very strong team in Port Harcourt to work with the health authorities of Rivers State. He said as the situation had effectively been managed in Lagos and Enugu, that in Port Harcourt would also be effectively managed and they had begun to do so.

The consultant surgeon charged the residents of Port Harcourt not to panic over this situation as the experience gathered from Lagos and Enugu respectively indicated that there was no cause for alarm.

Besides, the World Health Organisation (WHO) yesterday issued a roadmap to scale up international response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

The WHO in a statement said the aim was to stop ongoing Ebola transmission worldwide within six to nine months, while rapidly managing the consequences of any further international spread. It also recognises the need to address, in parallel, the outbreak’s broader socioeconomic impact.

Researchers said yesterday that safety trials on an Ebola vaccine were being fast-tracked, meaning it could be given to healthy volunteers from Britain, Gambia and Mali as early as September.

Researchers hope the trials could finish by the end of 2014. If they are successful, the vaccine could then be given to people infected with Ebola, which is spread through bodily fluids.

The move was announced by pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), which is developing the vaccine with the United States National Institute of Health (NIH), and London-based medical charity Wellcome Trust, which is contributing to a grant to pay for the trials.

The minister explained: “You will notice that the number of cases has increased from 13 to 15. You will also notice that this additional two were not treated in the isolation ward in Lagos. One of them is a primary contact of the index case (Mr. Patrick Sawyer). Even though presently he does not have EVD but further laboratory tests indicate that he had suffered EVD.

“This primary contact of Mr. Sawyer’s evaded our surveillance team in the last week of July 2014 and travelled out of Lagos to Port Harcourt where, as we now understand, he consulted with a doctor and was apparently treated for some symptoms. After four days, following a manhunt for him, he returned to Lagos by which time he was found to be without symptoms.

“This case would have been of no further interest since he had completed the 21 days of surveillance without any other issue, but for the fact that the doctor who treated him died last Friday, 22nd August, 2014.

“Following the report of this death by the doctor’s widow the next day, the case had been thoroughly investigated and laboratory analysis showed that this doctor died from EVD. As a result, several contacts have now been traced, registered and placed under surveillance. However, because the widow is now symptomatic, she has been quarantined pending the outcome of laboratory tests on her.”

As part of precautionary measure to curb the spread of the dreaded diseases, the Rivers State government yesterday said it had placed no fewer than 100 persons under surveillance. The government, however, refused to reveal the location of the isolation centres and the hotel where the man who brought the virus to the state stayed.

Though there had been a speculation in the past two weeks that an Ebola patient fled to Port Harcourt, it was yesterday that the Rivers State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Sampson Parker, specifically acknowledged the death of Enemuo from Ebola virus disease. The late doctor was said to be the owner of a private hospital at Rumuokoro in Port Harcourt.

“The Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has directed me to make this solemn announcement to you. And it is with a heavy heart that I announce to you that the Ebola virus has claimed its first victim in Rivers State. Dr. Iyke Sam Enemuo died last week Friday, August 22, 2014 as a result of what was suspected to be Ebola virus disease,” he said.

Parker told journalists at his residence in Port Harcourt that the Rivers State Ministry of Health on becoming aware of the condition of Enemuo’s death, immediately commenced investigations and contact tracing. According to him, about 100 contacts from a hotel, patients of Enemuo and patients of the hospital where the late Enemuo was treated until his demise, have been identified and restricted in Rivers State and that locations are being decontaminated.

Parker said: “From our investigations some facts have emerged. An official of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the team that received the late Dr. Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian American diplomat who died of Ebola haemorrhagic disease in Lagos, Nigeria made a trip to Port Harcourt where he checked into a hotel and met with Dr. Iyke Sam Enemuo. About a week after his departure, Dr. Iyke Enemuo took ill and was rushed to a hospital where he presented symptoms of fever, diarrhea and vomiting. In the course of treatment, the managing physician became suspicious and took samples for investigation.

“A few days after, Dr. Iyke Enemuo died on August 22, 2014. His body was deposited at a mortuary in Port Harcourt. Dr. Iyke Enemuo’s widow, who is also a medical doctor and who cared for him during his illness has taken ill. She is being quarantined. A few hours ago, results of the test carried out on samples taken from Dr. Enemuo came back and were positive of Ebola viral disease. The diplomat who was seen by the late Dr. Iyke Enemuo is alive and well.

“I urge every Rivers State citizen and resident to remain calm and go about their normal businesses. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water and avoid unnecessary body contacts till further notice.”

He explained that the government of Rivers State was doing everything possible to contain the effects and spread of the Ebola virus. As part of the preparation to curb the spread, the commissioner said all the material and human resources needed to fight and defeat the deadly virus were available.

According to him, officials of the Federal Ministry of Health and other international agencies are already in the state working with the state ministry of health.

A health worker close to the wife of the late Enemuo, and who pleaded anonymity told The Guardian that she had been suffering high fever and was at home and not at a quarantine centre. According to him, the woman who is a doctor at UPTH radiology department, and nursing a three-month-old child was contemplating hiring a private ambulance to convey her to Lagos where she intended to seek medical assistance.

“When I spoke to her this morning she complained of high fever. She told me that she had called the Ebola emergency personnel to come and quarantine her family but to no avail. I understand she took care of him while he was sick. In fact, she was also making effort to get an ambulance to take her to Lagos for treatment. When her husband died, several persons visited their house where she was still staying to condole with her. They might all be at risk now as well,” he said.

A source at the UPTH disclosed to The Guardian that the report that Enumou’s body had been deposited in UPTH morgue had created tension as staff were not informed. He said even the morticians that handled the body of Enemuo were still moving freely and probably spreading the virus.

At the state-owned Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital in Port Harcourt, health workers have started screening patients seeking medical assistance for symptoms of Ebola.

The WHO statement reads: “It responds to the urgent need to dramatically scale up the international response. Nearly 40 per cent of the total number of reported cases have occurred within the past three weeks.

“The roadmap was informed by comments received from a large number of partners, including health officials in the affected countries, the African Union, development banks, other UN agencies, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and countries providing direct financial support.

“It will serve as a framework for updating detailed operational plans. Priority is being given to needs for treatment and management centres, social mobilisation, and safe burials. These plans will be based on site-specific data that are being set out in regular situation reports, which will begin this week.

“The situation reports map the hotspots and hot zones, present epidemiological data showing how the outbreak is evolving over time, and communicate what is known about the location of treatment facilities and laboratories, together with data needed to support other elements of the roadmap.

“The roadmap covers the health dimensions of the international response. These dimensions include key potential bottlenecks requiring international coordination, such as the supply of personal protective equipment, disinfectants, and body bags.

“The WHO roadmap will be complemented by the development of a separate UN-wide operational platform that brings in the skills and capacities of other agencies, including assets in the areas of logistics and transportation. The UN-wide platform aims to facilitate the delivery of essential services, such as food and other provisions, water supply and sanitation, and primary health care.

“Resource flows to implement the roadmap will be tracked separately, with support from the World Bank.”

The statement from GSK reads: “A candidate Ebola vaccine could be given to healthy volunteers in the UK, the Gambia and Mali as early as September, as part of a series of safety trials of potential vaccines.”

A total of 3,062 cases have so far been reported but the WHO warned on Thursday that the caseload could eventually exceed 20,000.

The trials, which still need ethical and regulatory approval, will be funded by a £2.8 million (3.5 million euro, $4.6 million) grant from the Wellcome Trust, Britain’s Medical Research Council (MRC) and the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

The Oxford study will involve 60 healthy volunteers, while those in the Gambia and Mali will each involve 40.

This will also allow GSK to make some 10,000 extra doses of the vaccine so that if the trials are successful, it could be made available to the WHO quickly.

Safety tests of the vaccine will take place at Oxford University alongside a U.S. trial run by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
