Sam Bradford has been traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, despite the rumors it looks like he will enter 2015 as the starter in the city of brotherly love.
Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Chip Kelly won an off-season power struggle in the Eagle front office and was given domain over personnel decisions. Since that time he has been very active making trades, releasing players, and acquiring new ones to replace those displaced. That trend continued this week as the Eagles traded away QB Nick Foles to the St. Louis Rams for QB Sam Bradford. He followed up that move by signing former San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Matthews.
This was not a straight across trade for starting QBs, although both players look to be the starters on the new teams. The Rams will get a fourth round pick from Philly in the 2015 draft and a second round pick in the 2016 NFL draft. The Eagles will get the Rams fifth round pick in 2015.
There are also some reports that Philly has an insurance clause in the deal and hat if Bradford doesn’t start at least 8 games the Eagle will get an additional fourth round pick. If Bradford, coming off back-to-back season ending knee injuries, is injured, that pick becomes a third rounder. That is a hefty investment in Bradford and should quash some of the rumors of the Eagles acquiring Bradford to package him for another veteran QB or the draft pick need to take Marcus Mariota in the coming NFL draft.
Mark Sessler of NFL.com put in this way: “It’s an especially bold move by the Eagles coach, who will now pivot his star-stripped offense around a signal-caller who has yet to live up to his lofty draft pedigree. Injuries have limited Bradford to just seven starts over the past two seasons.”
“Deeper questions, though, hover around the quarterback’s larger body of work, with Bradford failing to grow into anything resembling a top passer over the past five seasons,” he said.
