The Big East Tournament 2015 will feature a Championship Game Final between Villanova and Xavier. It’s safe to say that most pundits believed one of those two teams would be here, but the other is a big surprise for most, and they have punched well above their weight in this year’s Big East tournament. Villanova have been by far and above the most widely talked about team in the Big East this season. Oppositely, Xavier is a team that most believed would have done very well just to get to the quarter-finals.
However, that means that all the pressure will be on Villanova tonight, and Xavier will relish the prospect of being the big underdogs who can cause a big shock against the biggest team in the Big East.
The Musketeers were seeded sixth, but they completed their amazing run with a thrilling 65-63 victory over Georgetown on Friday – one of the biggest upsets in the tournament until now.
Xavier’s Matt Stainbrook managed to post 20 points and nine rebounds in the game to get his team over the line.
One major area needing improvement for the Musketeers is from the free throw line. They struggled badly, and that allowed the Hoyas to cut down a 21 point deficit to just one point in the final minute. However, they held on and scored five of their last six attempts to claim a famous victory to give themselves a chance at taking the title today.
However, Villanova will be big favorites and are looking to complete what everyone has expected them to do all season long. Xavier will be looking at Villanova’s semi-final performance and will have hope, as it certainly proved that Villanova are not untouchable. They scraped through with a 63-61 semifinal victory over defending tournament champion Providence. They needed Ryan Arcidiacono to hit two free throws with just 3.1 seconds remaining to claim the win.
