Mercedes Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain drives during the first practice session of the Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi November 21, 2014.

Lewis Hamilton and his Mercedes car have managed to take a fourth straight pole position this year, as the British driver held off a challenge from Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel during qualifying.

Mercedes will not have a monopoly on the front row of the grid, after Vettel’s excellent work means he takes second spot ahead of Hamilton’s teammate, Nico Rosberg.

Vettel was so close to taking pole too, however, Hamilton saved the best for last, and on his very final lap in qualifying he smashed Vettel’s time by 0.411 seconds.

Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen managed to take fourth spot on the grid to ensure that the battle at the front of the race will be between Mercedes and Ferrari.

There is not much between the Ferrari and Mercedes cars on the Bahrain track when it comes to speed, and that means it could come down to the finer tactical points of the race, such as pit stops and how well each driver uses their tires.

Ahead of the race, Lewis Hamilton has said, “I feel great. I’m really grateful to have this beast underneath me to attack these corners.”

Meanwhile, Rosberg has explained why he feels he was unable to take a place on the front row of the grid: “I was thinking too much about the race and I under-estimated Sebastian’s speed. I took it easy in Q2 to save the race tires, so I lacked the rhythm for Q3. That’s where I went wrong today. Being third is not ideal.”
