In the autumn of 1621, the Pilgrims celebrated the colonies’ first successful harvest. This marked the start of the long-standing tradition of Thanksgiving. Ironically, although the Pilgrims celebrated days of giving thanks as part of their Christian faith, they were days of prayer and fasting—not feasting.
