Vice President Mike Pence (pictured below) said the leader who has a “heart of gratitude for evangelical Christians” in the US has been “very humbled” by believers who pray for him.
Speaking with the Virginia Beach-based Christian Broadcasting Network on Monday, he said: “The sweetest words the President and I ever hear, and we hear them a lot, are when people grab us by the hand and say, ‘we’re praying for you.’
Mr Trump described the “real spirit” of Christmas as knowing “we are a child of God”, while switching on lights at the National Christmas tree in Washington DC on Thursday.
In recent months, several women have come forward to accuse the US President of sexual assault – all claims he denies.
Mike Pence, himself an evangelical believer, also told CBN: “I’ve been with this President in the Oval Office with religious leaders.
“When people have asked to pause for a moment of prayer and the President readily embraces that. I think he’s always very humbled and grateful by the support of believers.”
Donald Trump incurred criticism from the Archbishop of Canterbury Most Rev Justin Welby last week when the Anglican leader rebuked him over his attitudes towards women and his decision to retweet far-right Twitter posts.
