The 70-year-old is a last minute signing for the show, which returned on Tuesday night.

To mark 100 years since women were given the vote the series will start with an all-female lineup.

The new series will see the women “take part in a series of entertaining tasks and hidden experiments which will test their – and our – assumptions, challenge gender stereotypes and reveal fascinating truths about what it is to be a woman – and man – in the 21st century”.

Channel 5 has said male contestants will enter later on.

Widdecombe previously told Premier she would never do Celebrity Big Brother.

“I think there are lines to be drawn,” she said whilst taking part in Strictly Come Dancing.

“I always refused to do Big Brother and one year I did come under a lot of pressure to do it but I’m not interested, I disapprove, I think its voyeurism.”

Also entering the house last night was journalist Rachel Johnson – the sister of Boris Johnson and 81-year-old actress Amanda Barrie.
