Jubilate has opened its Hymn of Peace competition, with the winning hymn to be recorded and released as a single.

Joel Payne from Jubilate told Premier News Hour the contest is open to all UK hymn writers, whether they are amateurs or experts.

“It’s simply a hymn text or a complete hymn, and we’re quite broad on how we’re defining a hymn.

“We all know what a song is and we all know what a hymn is, but there’s a blurred line in between so we’re trying to broad because we just want the very best.”

While there is creative freedom for the song, Payne said theme should be about peace as the song will be used to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War at Remembrance services and throughout the year.

He gave hymn-writing advice to beginners on Premier News Hour: “Hymns are usually metrical, so that means you actually have to decide on a… number of syllables per line and then you’ve got to work within that.

“What I do is gather Bible verses and then I’ll gather words and images and pictures and try to assemble them in some sort of theme.”

The winning hymn will be sung by celebrated baritone, Jonathan Veira, produced by Mark Edwards and feature members of the All Souls Orchestra, conducted by Noël Tredinnick.

Other hymns achieving the “highly commended” mark may also be considered for publication by Jubilate.

The submission deadline is Friday 8th April 2018.
