Michael Harrington, 46, from the Metropolitan’s Economic Crime Unit admitted to stealing more than £83,000 in cash seized from 16 people travelling out of Heathrow Airport during a five-year crime spree.
According to the Metropolitan Police, Harrington pleaded guilty to the charges last October after being arrested and suspended from duty.
He was due to be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court last Friday, after admitting 16 charges of theft.
However, he failed to show up in court and was discovered in Staines, Surrey.
Harrington had been based at Heathrow as part of the Criminal Finance Team.
The money should have been seized and banked, with it being returned to the owner if, following subsequent investigation, there was no evidence it had been obtained by criminal means.
Harrington has been remanded in custody until sentencing on 28th February.
