Justin Welby has been speaking in a week which has seen the chances of Britain delaying its exit from the EU increased.

He’s called on Christians to pray for those involved in the process.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “MPs & staff have worked hard and voted bravely on the hardest questions of our time.

“Criticism is a right: abuse against MPs & staff is evil, a betrayal of our freedom.

“Let us pray with thanks for them and reject threats, trolling and insult. It’s unworthy of our country.”

European leaders will now consider whether to agree to UK calls for Britain’s departure to be delayed.
