The church’s preschool director, Michelle Rushing told local news outlet WPSD: “God was definitely with us.

“The secretary and I walked through the doors just as we heard our glass breaking and felt the suction sucking.”

Staff members were able to quickly get children into a safe area in the church that’s used in emergencies.

Ryan Willcutt, a McCracken County sheriff’s deputy had to rush back to his car to take cover while he was on his way to help people at the church.

“I saw the trees coming up out of the ground and flying through the air and power lines coming up and laying down over the road,” he said.

“I just kind of put my head down covered my head and prayed for the best.”

According to Keith Todd, a spokesman for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the violent storm began in Lovelaceville, Kentucky and then travelled through the West Paducah area.

Sunday school was due to be cancelled at the church last weekend but the main service still held.
