Rev Maria Holmden from All Saints was speaking after the incident which saw the PC suffer stab wounds to his head and hand in what the Metropolitan Police are calling a “frenzied” and “unprovoked” attack.

The officer was struck by a machete while carrying out routine checks on a van in Leyton, in east London. He’s expected to make a full recovery.

A man’s been arrested.

Encouraging people to pray for those caught up in the incident, Rev Holmden said: “I don’t want to put my feelings on them but I can imagine that they would be feeling a bit anxious about the next time they have to stop someone and someone gets aggressive. It’s a scary thing. I think they’re very brave to do the job that they do.

“From the reports I’ve seen, the police officer who was injured had a colleague who actually arrested the person, whether or not that colleague may be having some post-traumatic stress I don’t know, because I know they have training and support in the police, but pray that God will help the colleague be able to cope with the situation and to find comfort and support.

“Pray too for the injured officer for his recovery and for his family.”

Boris Johnson has offered his sympathies to the police officer and says the attack in Leyton last night “underscores the bravery” of our police, and shows the importance of investing in them.
