This is Daniel Whyte III president of Gospel Light Society International with The Scripture & The Sense Podcast #414, where I read the Word of God and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as the Bible Knowledge Commentary or Matthew Henry Commentary. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.

Today we are reading Amos 1:12.

12 But I will send a fire upon Teman, which shall devour the palaces of Boz-rah.

________

That was Amos 1:12. Now here is the sense of it.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary reads:

Because of this unnatural and vindictive hatred, God would send fire upon Teman and Boz-rah. Teman was Edom’s largest southern city; Bozrah was her fortress stronghold in the north. The two cities thus stand for the whole nation under God’s wrath. Some scholars, however, say Teman was in the north near Boz-rah. At any rate, both were major Edomite cities. Edom was subjugated by the As-syr-ians in the eighth century b.c., turned into a desolate wasteland by the fifth century b.c., and overtaken by the Na-ba-te-ans, an Arabian tribe, around 400–300 b.c.
