David Stokes has been spending six days of the week using his voice to raise money for good causes.

Charities he has raised money for include St Oswald’s, Salvation Army, Gateshead Foodbank and Premier Christian Radio.

He told Premier News Hour the idea came from his friends at church.

“It really started at church. Everyone at church was saying I was a good singer,” he said.

“So I went out with a guitar to go busking.  I told my mother I’m going busking, she says ‘no you’re not it’s begging’, she says ‘well it’s not so bad if do it for charity’, so I’ve just done it for charity ever since.

Stokes said he spends three to five hours a day singing his favourite Elvis Presley songs.  He rotates between train stations and Gateshead town centre and makes between £30 and £60 a day.

He said the most he’s made in a week was £600 during the Christmas period.

Stokes takes £100 out each month to help with his expenses, but donates the rest.

The 76-year-old, whose battled cancer and other major health issues, says he doesn’t have a goal of how much he wants to raise for charity but will continue fundraising for a little while longer.

“I just love singing and I’m on my own so it gets me out the house and gives me something to do,” he said.
