The Railway Mission is taking on five new full time staff to support workers who, according to the charity, have been insulted, spat at and had things thrown at them by passengers.

Anger towards rail staff has risen in recent months due to timetable changes causing major delays across the country.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Liam Johnston, executive director at the Railway Mission, said: “Because the employees that commuters are seeing are the frontline staff on the gate lines or despatching trains, they’re the ones who are getting the brunt of their anger and frustration.

The news comes as strikes and station closures are threatening to cause major disruption on the rails this bank holiday.

The country’s fifth busiest station – London Euston – is shut until Tuesday.

And there’s a 24-hour walkout on Northern Rail today in a dispute over the role of guards.
