The track, called ‘Diamond, was presented to the Christian entertainer backstage at a Royal Albert Hall concert coinciding with his 78th birthday on Sunday.
Paul Whitfield from the New Life Christian Centre in Wakefield told Premier: “The song is a real ‘thank you’ from his fans for all the joy, enjoyment and pleasure that he’s brought to them over the years…”
Inspiration for the idea came from fans in London and Surrey who decided to create a musical piece celebrating what Sir Cliff means to them.
Aficionados were asked to contribute a couple of lines they had written about Sir Cliff and a donation towards production costs.
Paul went on to say: “I think the only money that was spent was actually on manufacturing the limited edition CD, of which there were 1,000 made. All the surplus has gone directly to Tearfund.”
It has since emerged the single, which featured the vocals of Helen Hobson has raised in excess of £7,000 for charity.
Organisers set themselves the task of raising £4,000 in six months to fund the production of Diamond – but the target was met within just ten days.
A number of industry professionals, including Paul, contributed their time and effort at zero cost – meaning a greater total for Tearfund.
One thousand copies of the limited edition Diamond CD sold out with days but the single is still available to download online.
