The Royal Navy’s latest Type 26 Frigate was named HMS London this week but it will not bear the City of London’s motto, ‘God guide us’.
The motto of the vessel – which cost an estimated £8 billion to build – shall instead be ‘Guide us’.
An article by the UK Defence Journal reported that the decision to have God “removed” from the slogan had left “many scratching their heads”.
Readers were told that some ships formerly bearing the HMS London title had carried the religious motto.

Writer, George Allison said: “Religion and history however, are intertwined and to separate them like this seems like an odd move.”
But, speaking with Premier, a MOD spokeswoman said previous ships had never referred to God in their mottos.
The Royal Navy did not bestow crests or mottos onto its warships until in 1919. The first HMS London ship received such honours in 1926.
