All’s Fair in Love and COVID: Marriage and Divorce in a Pandemic

Marriages & divorces dropped off at the start of the pandemic and haven’t bounced back as expected as states have lifted restrictions. by Catherine Kimble

There are many times when an in-person hearing or trial is still preferable.”

— Maria S. Lowry, Houston Family Law Attorney

A study by Bowling Green State University’s Center for Family and Demographic Research analyzed the marriage and divorce rates in five states- Florida, Arizona, New Hampshire, Missouri, and Oregon. According to the study, if these trends “were repeated nationwide, the U.S. had an estimated ‘shortfall’ of 339,917 marriages and 191,053 divorces, according to the paper by Bowling Green’s Wendy Manning and Krista Payne. In 2019, there were roughly 2.2 million marriages in the U.S., and about 1 million divorces.”

Having a decrease in marriages and divorces in March and April 2020 was expected with the shutdowns and stay-at-home orders. However, when many states started reopening in the summer and fall, there was not an influx of marriages and divorces that would indicate that people were waiting until reopening occurred.

However, this was not the case everywhere. According to Bloomberg Wealth, “One exception is Arizona, where divorce numbers did bounce back over the summer to bring the state slightly above expected levels.”

While divorces were actually down, “In the first half of 2020, there were signs of an impending spike in divorce, with reports of a surge of filings in China as it came out of quarantine, and a disturbing rise in domestic violence arrests and calls to the police while U.S. cities were under stay-at-home orders in March” according to Bloomberg Wealth.

Even though the divorce rate is down, it does not necessarily mean that couples are happier in their marriages. According to Wendy Manning, a sociology professor who is the director of the Center for Family and Demographic Research, “Divorce can be expensive, and couples may be reluctant while facing economic uncertainty and/or health issues. These folks may feel ‘stuck’ and they could be delaying divorce until life feels more normal.”

With having to spend more time together, problems about the other person that could have been ignored or at least tolerated before the COVID-19 lockdown are coming to the surface.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, some people are getting divorced over Zoom. One unexpected advantage of going to court proceedings over Zoom is that it can save time. In the past, you may have had to wait around the courthouse for an hour to see a judge for a five-minute proceeding. Zoom calls eliminate that wait. According to Houston family law attorney Maria S. Lowry, most divorce cases are currently being handled remotely, and even mediation is being held via Zoom. This is a good solution, says Lowry, and for many families, it is superior to being in person. As the Harris County courts open up, Lowry expects them to continue to hold some proceedings via Zoom. “Of course,” says Lowry, “there are many times when an in-person hearing or trial is still preferable.”

Even though Zoom meetings may be saving time, it is not making the emotional toll of divorce any easier. Divorced parents are unsure how to deal with co-parenting and schooling during the pandemic with some places doing virtual schooling or a hybrid of in-person and virtual schooling. Also, there could be struggles if the couple has different views on COVID-19 restrictions and how to deal with them.

Even if you do not have kids, splitting up during the pandemic can still be difficult. For one thing, establishing a separate residence during the pandemic is no easy feat. Even absent the threat of COVID-19, attorney Lowry has found that many families continue to live in the same house even though separated (Lowry notes that Texas does not have “legal separation” as some other states do). This may be because money is tight or to enable the parents to co-parent and keep the family unit as stable and consistent as possible. If there are children, Lowry explains that the parents can go ahead and settle custody and support issues while staying in the same home and waiting on the actual divorce. “Another option,” says Lowry, “is a cohabitation agreement that sets out some rules such as how bills will be handled, decisions about personal property, and whether the parties will be allowed to date or have overnight guests.”

Speaking of dating post-divorce, finding new love in the midst of a lockdown can be challenging, to say the least. The prospect of not meeting someone new might be another reason couples are holding off from filing for divorce until restrictions are eased.

Some people do not like doing their divorce proceedings over Zoom. They would rather have their lawyer there next to them. This helps to have a human connection and to make the person feel like they are not alone. Meeting with your lawyer privately during a divorce mediation can also be difficult without the right technology and careful planning in advance of the mediation.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed how we do just about everything, including marriage and divorce. It is still too early to determine how the pandemic will affect these institutions long-term.

Iranian Born Pastor Takes Up the Cause of International Persian Music

International Persian music artists are now receiving a boost in visibility and recognition thanks to the efforts of Iranian-born American Pastor Ara Torosian. Pastor Torosian who heads the Cornerstone Farsi Church in Los Angeles is well known for his unconventional methods of expanding his ministry and propagating the message of love and hope among people through events, conferences, social media, and music production.

Pastor Ara Torosian has come a long way since he set foot in the USA from Iran in 2010. Besides his religious duties, the pastor is producing Persian music videos as an executive producer, thus contributing to the growth of International Persian Artists like Cameron Cartio, Andre Hovnanyan, Helen Matevosian and Salpi Kelishian. Pastor Torosian’s passion for music is making a huge difference to the careers of both Persian musicians and the community at large.

Pastor Ara Torosian was born and raised in an Armenian family in Iran before fleeing to the USA as a refugee in 2010. Civil strife and persecution in Iran led to the Pastor being placed under a two-year house arrest for trying to get Bibles into his church. Fearing the worst, the pastor was forced to leave Iran and flee to the USA where he could freely practice his beliefs, propagate his religion, and work for the Persian community in the US. Pastor Torosian set up the Cornerstone Farsi Church and soon grew in popularity for his unconventional methods such as soccer fellowship group and children’s Sunday school in Farsi. The Pastor’s added passion for art and music soon found him producing music for contemporary Persian and Armenian artists of international repute.

Pastor Torosian’s reputation has grown far and wide. He began gaining invitations to speak in several conferences across the country which he used for spreading love and hope among people and bringing awareness for persecuted Church in Middle East. The Pastor’s affinity for using social media resulted in him setting up a successful YouTube channel called Drivewithme where he sought to promote the city of Los Angeles and draw attention to the growing problem of homelessness in the city. Pastor Torosian’s videos have gained thousands of views and have been receiving credit from TV stations and news bodies worldwide.

Pastor Ara Torosian is now a beacon of light for the Persian community in Los Angeles and a prominent figure of the Cornerstone Farsi Church. He has envisioned a successful career as a music producer in line with his ministry where he has pledged to be a true servant of God.

What Covid-19 Vaccine Passport could cause, after Governments Cross the Line with Vaccine Passports

As COVID cases dropped in recent weeks, hope across America for a restoration of freedom began to re-emerge.

This is the single greatest threat to your freedom to travel, your health, and, indeed, even to live a normal life.” – Mat Staver, president of Liberty Counsel

In the COVID-19 pandemic, Americans have seen government intrusions into personal and corporate liberty at unprecedented levels, according to Richard Harris, executive director, Truth & Liberty Coalition.

“As COVID cases dropped in recent weeks, hope across America for a restoration of freedom began to re-emerge,” said Harris. “But the Biden-Harris Administration evidently has another agenda.”

Recently, the state of New York announced it was rolling out a “vaccine passport” to prevent access to goods and services by everyday Americans who have failed to receive the experimental vaccines.

The Biden-Harris Administration denied that it would ever require vaccine passports, but newly revealed documents show that New York’s program is actually part of a nationwide initiative fueled by the federal government.

“Our friends at Liberty Counsel have been examining the issue of vaccine passports and are sounding the alarm against government overreach and violations of individual liberties,” Harris said.

“This is the single greatest threat to your freedom to travel, your health, and, indeed, even to live a normal life,” said Mat Staver, president of Liberty Counsel. “This is the high-tech equivalent of the Nazi demand of ‘Papers, please’ — and it is coming unless we stop it NOW.”

Though the White House has publicly denied supporting vaccine credentials, Liberty Counsel has obtained a copy of a presentation that lays out the federal strategy.

Included in the government document are the following statements:

• “Vaccine Credentials—A Key Element of Recovery Efforts: Proof of vaccination for certain activities is not new. What is new is that such proof may be a critical driver for restoring baseline population health and promoting safe return to social, commercial and leisure activities.”

• Its goal is the “coordination and alignment of vaccine credential activities across [Health and Human Services] agencies.”

• “. . . for an individual’s return to day-to-day activities, Federal government will inevitably be involved with vaccine credential solutions . . .”

• “Federal entities, like their commercial counterparts, will likely require vaccine verification for a variety of purposes.”

• This federal group “will build a shared database of initiatives and contacts for future meetings as well as a resource for Federal agencies to work with each other.”

• “The VA [Veterans Affairs] Office of Information Technology is engaged with the Vaccine Credential Initiative. We are implementing a VA-issued vaccine credential.”

• “Will there be federal uses?” It lists places that ask for vaccine passports such as “International and domestic travel,” “Access to Federal facilities,” “Access to VA/DOD and military facilities” and “Federal health care providers for continuity of care.”

• It is a “forum for raising awareness of initiatives across Federal agencies . . . and communicating progress to the White House.”

“Educating people of faith to engage in public affairs is important for maintaining biblical values in our society,” said Harris.

“We find often that churchgoers and pastors don’t know where to start,” said Harris. “Our goal is to educate audiences and connect with resources and groups across the nation to help them impact their own spheres of influence.”

To make your voice heard, visit Liberty Counsel’s website to sign a petition and to tell your lawmakers to STOP mandatory vaccinations and vaccine passports.

Frontline and Immigrant Workers Receive Care Packages In ‘Aid To Humanity’ Events By Church of Christ

Essential workers in British Columbia, Canada receive appreciation and a morale boost from outreach events of global Church.

The Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) or Church Of Christ launched a series of activities under the ‘Aid To Humanity’ initiative, aimed at uplifting the morale of frontline essential workers and immigrants affected by the current pandemic.

On March 27 and 28, 2021, INC volunteers handed out 480 care packages containing groceries to frontline essential workers who accepted the Church’s invitation to drive to the nearby INC worship buildings in Surrey, Burnaby, and Victoria, Canada.

The INC strives to play a part in appreciating and uplifting the frontliners in the greater Vancouver area and Victoria.

As stated by Statistics Canada (February 2, 2021): “Seven in ten health care workers who participated in a recent crowdsourcing initiative reported worsening mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic…”

Rose Ann Peralta, a nurse, was grateful for the token of appreciation she received. “I’m actually surprised and glad at the same time because not a lot of people appreciate what frontliners are doing. Many have been disregarding the frontliners’ effort, and I’m just glad that you appreciate what we do. I used to do my preceptorship at (the) hospital. I went there one day and it was the first day of an outbreak. It was really scary, and it was devastating for me to see the patients who have COVID-19 there. I believe that INC members have big hearts, so thank you for supporting the frontliners. Keep doing what you’re doing.”

The INC also distributed an additional 70 care packages to Mexican and Guatemalan immigrants working at a tulip farm in Abbotsford, Canada, also on the 28th. The care packages contained clothes and daily essentials.

According to Statistics Canada (May 1, 2020): “… Immigrants were significantly more likely than Canadian-born individuals to report that the crisis would have a “major” or “moderate” impact on their finances. In particular, immigrant men were more likely than Canadian-born men to report that the crisis would have an impact on their ability to meet financial obligations (43% vs. 27%).”

Robert Baldidoy, the supervisor of the tulip farm, stated, “The workers are so glad and thankful that the Church Of Christ was able to reach out to them with kind-hearted gifts and donations. They appreciate the packages that they received, which will give additional aid for their daily needs, but most of all looking forward to learning about the biblical words of God taught inside the Church Of Christ.”

The INC has more than a hundred congregations and groups worship service throughout Canada. Eighteen of which are in British Columbia.

The Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) or Church Of Christ continues to conduct outreach and INCGiving Project activities to help organizations and communities in over 158 countries and territories where there are INC members of different nationalities and ethnicities.

From the Vatican to the White House and back on Child Abuse

The Symposium will contribute to a greater awareness of the gravity and extent of child sexual abuse and promote more effective cooperation at every level of society in eradicating this profound evil” — Pope Francis, Pontifex, Vatican

International virtual ‘Symposium on Child Abuse’ dedicated to the prevention and healing of victims of child abuse, sponsored by 45 NGOs and interfaith organizations on national and international levels gathers more than 1600 participants to listen to 73 speakers from around the world from April 8-10.

After her visit with the Pope Francis in 2018, Jennifer Wortham has dedicated her life to the creation of April 8 World Day initiative, which aims at establishing April 8 as a U.N.-recognized World Day for the Prevention and Healing of Child Sexual Abuse. The initiative, now housed at Harvard University’s Human Flourishing Program, has yielded an unprecedented virtual ‘Symposium on Child Abuse.’

“It’s a conference that is focused overall on the issue of child sexual abuse and the engagement of the faith community, and helping to prevent and heal victims who have been impacted by child sexual abuse,” said Dr. Wortham.

Today the White House acknowledged the aims of the Symposium on Child Abuse. “In recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month and @April8WorldDay, the Administration joins efforts in calling everyone to stand against every form of child abuse and to protect all children from child sexual abuse,” reads the tweet posted by the White House Gender Policy Council. President Joe Biden responded to an open letter signed by a coalition of over 40 CEO’s, including national, and international child welfare advocacy groups, and international faith-based organizations in collaboration with Prevent Child Abuse America requesting he acknowledges the April 8, World Day for Child Sexual Abuse Prevention, Healing, and Justice as a national day of observance in the US.

Only two hours later, Pope Francis offered his official blessing for the Symposium:

“by bringing together Religious Leaders, Scholars, and experts from various fields in order to share research, clinical and pastoral experiences and best practices, the Symposium will contribute to a greater awareness of the gravity and extent of child sexual abuse and promote more effective cooperation at every level of society in eradicating this profound evil.”

99 Questions When Hiring a Worship Pastor

I met a pastor this past week at a conference for church planters. He told me he was searching for a worship pastor. I told him I would help. What I have found over the years through consulting and numerous conversations with senior pastors and executive pastors is that they simply don’t know what to ask when hiring a worship pastor (when it comes to music and if he or she can do the job).

Of course you will have your basic questions on theology, your particular church denominational beliefs and basic things we all look for like the 5 C’s: Character, Competency, Chemistry, Collaboration and Catalytic. Every leader should embody the 5 C’s.

Why do I feel qualified to write these questions? I think I offer a unique perspective as a boss, Campus Pastor and friend to numerous worship pastors. I’ve spent the last 22 years in worship ministry, producing worship experiences, serving as a Worship Pastor, Creative Arts Pastor, Tech Pastor, Director of WorshipHouse Media and consultant to some of the largest and fastest-growing churches in the country.

I’ve had the privilege and honor to consult with some amazing churches, including some of Outreach Magazine’s Fastest Growing Churches in the Country. I’ve also consulted and helped churches where Lincoln Brewster, Shane and Shane, Desperation Band/Jon Egan and the lead singer for Building 429 were leading worship. So, I know and have seen worship and the arts done on a high level and I have a true appreciation for what a worship pastor does, as well as a heart for worship.

99 Questions When Hiring a Worship Pastor

So, for the rest of you that will be hiring a worship pastor and don’t have a background in music and worship, what questions do you ask when hiring a Worship Pastor? I have some thoughts, such as:

  1. What is your definition of worship?
  2. Describe what worship looks like and why it’s more that music.
  3.  … read more
