Bishop Stephen Cottrell talks Christianity on Russell Brand’s podcast

Brand’s podcast Under The Skin features conversations with thinkers and authors on topics such as democracy, truth and beauty and often covers subjects that are moral or political.

On 8th June, the conversation with Rt Rev Stephen Cottrell will be released in which they talk about the relavance of Christianity today.

Trailing it in a video on Twitter together, Brand said: “You gotta listen to Under the Skin this week because I’m with Bishop Stephen Cottrell – you’re an actual bishop!

“I’m a real bona fide bishop!” he replied.

When asked to summarise what they spoke about, Bishop Stephen said: “I think it started off with a book that I’ve written that you came across reflecting on Stanley Spencer’s paintings.

Brand continued: “That’s right and we use that as a launch pad to talk about Christ in the wilderness, the relevance of Christ today, what are the principles of Christianity? What what is the value of Christianity in an advanced capitalist society?

“It was a very, very, very lovely conversation and I think what’s what’s beautiful for me is having a conversation where you can actually spend time talking about these things, because in our sound-bite culture everybody wants a quick answer a quick fix and I felt our conversation was a long bath rather than a shower.

“I’m glad you’re a metaphor in which we are both naked and immersed in water, you being a bishop…

Historic Flooding Drowns the Midwest

Historic Flooding Drowns the Midwest

The Midwest faces another week of rain and thunderstorms this week, prompting many in the region to recall the horrific floods of 1993. Many locations in the Plain states, as well as the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys, will see 1 to 3 inches of rain, with some localities facing as many as 5 inches.

According to the Weather Channel, 10 locations have already set new record river levels as many areas saw record-breaking rainfall in May. Areas along the Arkansas River have seen the highest levels so far, with one location in Oklahoma and 5 in Arkansas setting river level records.

Tulsa, Oklahoma has also faced rising water levels. The river reached its highest level in Tulsa since 1986, placing stress on the levee system as more water poured in from Keystone Dam. In late May, the Army Corps of Engineers increased the release rate at the dam to 275,000 cubic feet per second, bringing back memories of the city’s historic flood of 1986.

The city of Davenport, Iowa is also seeing echoes of the flood of 1993. The city’s temporary barrier failed in April and the river crested last week at 21 feet, which is the second highest crest since 1993. One restaurant owner in the city told theNew York Times that the city had gotten “a little too complacent,” adding, “The city had a good flood plan. It’s been successful since 1993 – until this year.”

Rising waters made their way down to Louisiana…

Bishops sow seeds for mental health at Lambeth Palace

Members of the Church of England gathered at the Archbishop of Canterbury’s residence to learn more about the healing benefits of gardening and put their green fingers to the test on the palace grounds.

Green Health Live 2 brought together chaplains and healthcare professionals to showcase the work of parishes providing therapeutic gardening spaces and share how gardening can help to improve well-being.

Last year a survey of clergy found that the number one problem they faced in their parishes was mental health issues. Research shows that gardening can help to relieve the effects of depression, loneliness and a range of mental health issues, but many people, particularly in towns and cities, do not have gardens of their own.

Speaking to Premier, the Church’s lead bishop on healthcare issues, Rev James Newcome said many churches have redundant green spaces that could be utilised to help people.

He added: “Health and healing are a key part of our ministry. I think if we’re really concerned about the whole person, body, mind and spirit, then we have a huge responsibility to do everything we can to help and this is one way of doing it.”

Public health expert Professor Jim McManus shared some of the practical benefits of gardening and said: “Being in a garden really reduces your blood pressure and can reduce your…

Pastor’s House Prayer Asks God to ‘Judge Illinois’ for Destruction of ‘Innocent Unborn’

Pastor’s House Prayer Asks God to ‘Judge Illinois’ for Destruction of ‘Innocent Unborn’

A pastor quoted Scripture and asked God to judge Illinois for the “sanctioned destruction of the innocent unborn” during the opening prayer of the House of Representatives Friday, three days after the same body voted to expand abortion in the state through all nine months of pregnancy.

“God, we have made our appeals to the leaders of Illinois this week, on behalf of those innocent babies who do not yet have a voice,” Cory Musgrave, pastor of New Beginnings Church in Fairfield, Ill., prayed. “We have been a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves as you have commanded us. Those appeals were denied.

“But we have one final appeal left, and that is to the courts of heaven. God Almighty, I make an appeal to heaven today, to you the perfect judge, the one who presides over heaven’s court. I ask you to rise up, Oh God, and judge Illinois, for the sanctioned destruction of the innocent unborn. For when your judgments are in this state, the inhabitants of Illinois learn righteousness.”

The bill, H.B. 25, declares abortion a “fundamental right” and says the fetus “does not have independent rights,” as Christian Headlines previously reported. It also forces insurance companies to cover abortion and requires parents to pay for their daughter’s abortion, even if they objected to the procedure. The bill passed the…

5 Timely Summer Reads for Thoughtful Christians

Photo by Ben White on Unsplash

Summer is a great time to pick up a good book—and not just for escapist fare.

At Denison Forum, we equip Christians to thoughtfully engage the issues of the day from a biblical perspective. In our rapidly changing world, it’s important to be well-informed in order to share the timeless truth of God’s word in a culturally relevant way.

So here are five books on a variety of topics, from faith to foreign affairs, that will get you thinking. Some just came out; some have been out awhile. But all of them have a timely message.

This book, in a surprising twist given its title, should be an encouragement to every follower of Christ.

Kelly believes the biggest lie is one we tell ourselves as Christians: “Holiness is not possible.” We think that holiness is possible for other people, “our grandmothers or some medieval saint – just not for us.”

We sell ourselves short, with profound implications for the world around us. Kelly explains: “This lie takes us out of the game and turns us into mere spectators in the epic story of Christianity that continues to unfold in every generation.”

The solution is what he calls “holy moments,” when we grasp opportunities to display Christ’s influence in our lives and establish an internal momentum that has a ripple effect on those around us.

Tisby writes that many of the worst acts of racism occurred “in a context of compromise.” When Christians failed to oppose racist conditions, it provided “fertile soil for the seeds of hatred to grow.”

Tisby begins his narrative in colonial times, when the two foremost preachers of the Great Awakening, George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards, owned slaves, and continues through the era of Black Lives Matter.

A classic example of the kind of compromise Tisby describes came when Martin Luther King was incarcerated in Birmingham in 1963. He received a letter from eight…

Church leader charged with child rape in US

Naason Joaquin Garcia and a follower of La Luz del Mundo, 24-year-old Susana Medina Oaxaca, were arrested after landing at Los Angeles International Airport, California attorney general Xavier Becerra’s office said.

Around 1,000 worshippers gathered at the headquarters of La Luz del Mundo in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, to pray for Garcia as he was held in Los Angeles on 25 dollars million (£20 million) bail.

The 50-year-old, known as “the Apostle” among his followers faces 26 counts ranging from human trafficking and production of child pornography to rape of a minor. The charges detail allegations involving three girls and one woman between 2015 and 2018 in Los Angeles County.

The church, whose name translates as the Light of the World, was founded in 1926 by Garcia’s grandfather. It has been the subject of child sex abuse allegations for years but authorities in Mexico have never filed criminal charges.

It has more than 15,000 churches in 58 countries, according to its website.

Garcia – who was a minister in Los Angeles and other parts of southern California before becoming the church’s leader – coerced the victims into performing sex acts by telling them that refusing would be going against God, authorities said.

“Crimes like those alleged in this complaint have no place in our society. Period,” Mr Becerra said in a press release. “We must not turn a blind eye…

‘I Felt the Calling’: Stephen Curry Tells of Day He Gave His Life to Christ

‘I Felt the Calling’: Stephen Curry Tells of Day He Gave His Life to Christ

NBA star Stephen Curry says in the latest episode of Facebook’s Stephen vs The Game that he became a Christian at a young age and that he writes a Bible verse on his sneakers to remind him of “who I’m playing for.”

It’s part of the fifth episode in the series and titled simply, “Faith.”

The Golden State Warriors guard says he learned early in life he couldn’t live off his parents’ faith. He was saved in the eighth grade while listening to a youth pastor named Jason, he said.

“I felt the calling, went down to the altar [and] gave my life to Christ. That became the beginning of my own personal journey,” he said. “I think my faith is about the personal relationship more so than the following a certain religious tradition, a religious practice.”

It’s important, he said, to “make sure you’re feeding your spirit with the right things versus what this world is throwing at us.” He called it a “constant, constant battle.”

“It’s only that much more serious because I have three kids that are going to be watching every move that we make,” he said.

The episode includes interviews with his father, Dell, and his mother, Sonya.

“I would have them get up at six o’clock in the morning to do devotion before school, to emphasize putting God first – to also train them, ‘You’re gonna have a job, get up at six o’clock…

Inquiry hears of ‘sexual abuse’ at home run by religious order

The man described how he cried after the incident at the children’s home run by a religious order but did not tell anyone because he thought no-one would listen.

He told the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry (SCAI) he felt “devastated” and “dumbfounded” to hear that the man does not accept the allegations made against him.

The fourth phase of the inquiry in Edinburgh, which began this week, is currently examining St Ninian’s, a residential school in Falkland, Fife that was run by the Christian Brothers.

The witness, known to the inquiry by the pseudonym John, was at St Ninian’s in the 1960s and told how the abuse happened when he was around the age of 14.

The abuse by one individual happened “almost right away” when he arrived there and would take place when he was in bed in the dormitory in the evening, the hearing was told.

“He would get in and put his hands inside my pyjamas then touch me,” the witness told the hearing.

He told how he would hear the man, who cannot be identified, enter the room and said that the adult did not speak during the attack.

Junior counsel to the inquiry, Ceit-Anna MacLeod, asked: “How sure were you at the time that it was (the religious brother) that was doing this to you?”

“Very sure,” the witness replied.

He told the hearing that the abuse would happen on a “fairly regular” basis and that he would cry afterwards.

The witness also described…

Hollywood Producer Launches Campaign to Fight Pro-Life Laws across the U.S.

Hollywood Producer Launches Campaign to Fight Pro-Life Laws across the U.S.

Hollywood producer and investor Peter Chernin has started a campaign to raise millions of dollars fighting anti-abortion laws in Georgia, calling on other media moguls to join him.

“I am launching a campaign to contribute to the $15 million that is needed to fund the A.C.L.U.’s legal efforts to battle the national anti-abortion effort,” Mr. Chernin wrote in an email last week, referring to the American Civil Liberties Union. The email, according to the New York Times, was sent to all of the executives of the major movie studios, as well as Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook and Shonda Rhimes.

Having already given $1 million, Chernin believes he has “a moral responsibility to act immediately.”

As Christian Headlines previously reported, in recent weeks, Georgia has applied heavy pressure against abortion, signing one of the most restrictive pro-life bills in the country on May 7. Should it take effect in January 2020, the bill would prohibit abortions after a heartbeat is detected.

Due to the state’s hefty tax breaks for production companies, it’s also found itself in the crosshairs of Hollywood’s liberal priorities. The Writer’s Guild of America threatened to boycott. Disney and Warner Media have considered relocating. And Netflix has linked support with ACLU.

The financial strain, however, may be too much for the production companies. The New…
