Was George Washington a failure?

“Poverty around the world is plummeting; half the world is now middle class; and illiteracy, disease and deadly violence are receding.” So reports the Wall Street Journal, probably to the surprise of many.

We might wonder if optimists are reading the same news as the rest of us. The stock market plunged yesterday after Apple warned it would miss its quarterly sales forecast due to weakening growth in China. The standoff over the partial government shutdown continues, with few predicting that today’s talks will make significant progress.

It even turns out that, according to The Smithsonian, the world’s oldest woman might have been her daughter masquerading as her mother.

Was George Washington a failure?

But, as Rick Newman points out in his book, Rebounders, the key to success is not a lack of failure but our response to it. Examples:

  • George Washington “lost more battles than he won during the Revolutionary War.”
  • Norman Vincent Peale’s wife rescued the manuscript of The Power of Positive Thinking from the trash after it had been rejected repeatedly by New York publishers; it became an all-time bestseller.
  • A 1914 fire destroyed Thomas Edison’s manufacturing operations, but the sixty-seven-year-old rebuilt and modernized factories that revolutionized technology.

According to Newman, “A whole body of scientific research has shown that overcoming setbacks can make people stronger, smarter, and more durable.”

If you’re like most of us, you’re facing significant challenges today. So, let’s ask a practical question: What’s the key to becoming a “rebounder”?

The value of a positive attitude

In a recent Daily Briefing, Dr. Nick Pitts cited a Yale University study of people carrying a gene linked to dementia. Those with positive attitudes about aging were 50 percent less likely to develop the disorder than less positive people.

Dr. Pitts also reported that positive thinking has been shown to reduce anxiety and improve overall…

Joyce Meyer Devotional 4 January 2019 — Living Large

Topic: Living Large [Joyce Meyer Devotional 4 January 2019]

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. — 2 Corinthians 9:8

When I feel like my “get up and go” has got up and gone, I purposely stir myself up through aggressive expectation!

God is the God of abundance, the one who wants us to live a large, free, and full life.

Dare to have big faith, big plans, and big ideas, because God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above and beyond all that you can ever dare to hope, ask, or think (see Ephesians 3:20 AMPC).

It is time to start asking God to do greater things! Have great expectations!

Don’t be afraid to ask God for big things. The truth is that you cannot ask for too much as long as your heart is right and you are willing to not only be blessed by God, but also be a blessing everywhere you go.

The Bible says God is searching for those in whom He can show Himself strong (see 2 Chronicles 16:9), and it can be you if you are willing to believe. You don’t need a perfect performance to qualify for God’s best; just love Him with all your heart. Don’t settle for less than the best life that you can have.

Prayer Starter: Amazing heavenly Father, I am humbled that You want to offer me an abundant life. I know that I don’t deserve Your goodness, but I do ask in faith that You would do great things for and through me. Thank You! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

TREM Devotional 4 January 2019 – The Million-Dollar Question

Topic: The Million-Dollar Question [TREM Devotional 4 January 2019]

“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?” Romans 6:1 KJV

Each time the gospel of Grace is taught, the average religious mind would always come with the question: ‘Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?’ The answer is capital NO. When Jesus paid the price, what He actually did was to remove the law; and when there is no law, there is no sin because sin is nothing but the breaking of the law.

Are we now lawless? Far from it. But what governs the believer is no longer the law but the love of God. The believer who has experienced grace understands the love of God and lives his or her life in a constant reminder of the love of God. When you come to this point, you are overwhelmed by the love of God that all that you want to do is to please Him.

Have you seen a couple who are so in love with each other? You will discover that their hearts literally beat as one. They do things for each other out of a heart of love. They do not cheat on each other, not because the Bible says you should not commit adultery, but because they so love each other. Every time you see them talking, they practically talk about any and everything and in this era of telecommunication, they use it to the maximum, just to enjoy a close walk one with another.

That is exactly the type of relationship God wants from us. He wants you to be so in love with Him that all you want to do, at every point in time, is to please Him. Your ears are to His mouth, you are led by His Spirit and you gladly do the things that He desires of you, not because there is a law, but because there is the strong bond of love.

MFM Daily Devotional 4 January 2019 – Mercy Triumphs Over Judgement

MFM Mountain Top Life Daily Devotional 4 January 2019 By Dr. D.K Olukoya – Mercy Triumphs Over Judgement

TOPIC: Mercy Triumphs Over Judgement (Mountain Of Fire and Miracle Ministries, MFM Daily Devotional 4 January 2019)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Matthew 5:7-12

MEMORY VERSE: “For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.” – James 2:13

The MESSAGE:

The book of James is a letter from Apostle James to the Church about practical Christian living. It deals with how to respond to God and how to maintain Christ-like relationship with others. In the Beatitudes, Jesus proclaims, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will obtain mercy (Matthew 5:7). In James 2:13, our Memory Verse for today, Apostle James gives the opposite of the statement. In essence, Apostle James is saying, “Cursed are the unmerciful, for they will be shown no mercy.” The truth is that a Christian is not under God’s curse but is expected to show mercy and compassion toward others. What does “mercy triumph over judgement” mean? It means that mercy rejoices, glories and boasts against judgement. Whenever mercy conflicts with Judgement concerning us, mercy will win. As children of God in Christ, God’s mercy toward us will triumph over His judgement of us (Romans 8:1). Our sins may stand against us, the accuser may level charges before the throne of God against us, but Christ is our Advocate, who argues for us and prevents us from receiving the judgement we deserve.

God’s message to us in James 2:13, therefore, is that since God judges us with mercy and deals with us with his lovingkindness, we too should judge with mercy and appreciate God’s lovingkindness by demonstrating same to others.

How do we show mercy to others? This injunction requires action not talk. Jesus is our model of mercy. He demonstrated His love and mercy towards us by practically laying down His life for us. On our parts, showing mercy to others require that we take an action. We must walk the talk. The blind, the lame, the oppressed came to Jesus, asking Him for mercy because He had the reputation of showing mercy. We should emulate Jesus. In the Parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus taught us that the Samaritan had compassion on the man and took steps to get him medical treatment so that he could live. When you feed the poor, clothe the naked and provide shelter to the homeless, you are showing mercy. Your action will not go unrewarded. Heaven will shower mercy on you as well.

Beloved, you may not be able to do all this in your power, but you will, if you ask for the help and enabling of the Holy Spirit. Whatever you may be passing through today, connect the mercy of God. Cry for mercy; approach the throne of grace boldly and obtain mercy and help! It is yours for the asking because you have an Advocate –Jesus Christ!

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:
SHOW MERCY TO OTHERS SO THAT YOU CAN RECEIVE GOD’S MERCY.

PROPHETIC WORD:
May the covering of grace over you and your family never be removed.

PRAYER POINTS:

MORNING

  1. O Lord, forgive me for the times I have been ungrateful to You, in the name of Jesus.
  2. I repent of my murmurs and complaints, in the name of Jesus.
  3. O Lord, help me to be merciful to others, in the name of Jesus.
    EVENING
  4. You spirit of ingratitude, lose your hold over my life, in the name of Jesus.
  5. I will not be a hindrance to my blessings, in the name of Jesus.
  6. Holy Spirit, help me to increase my trust in God’s word, in the name of Jesus.
  7. My blessings shall be perfected, in the name of Jesus.

DCLM Daily Manna 4 January 2019 – When Justice Is Delayed

Topic: When Justice Is Delayed [DCLM Daily Manna 4 January 2019 Daily Devotional by Pastor William Folorunso Kumuyi]

Text: Psalm 10:1-10 (KJV)

Key Verse: “The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts” (Psalm 10:4)

MESSAGE:

Vernon Madison, one of the longest serving inmates on Alabama’s death row, was scheduled to be executed on January 26, 2018. But 30 minutes before the scheduled execution, the U.S. supreme court issued a temporary stay. The stay was later granted and Madison’s execution called off. Madison, 67, has been on death row for over 30 years after being convicted of killing a mobile police officer.

Psalm 10 could be taken as a plea for divine justice. The psalmist catalogued several actions of the wicked that should have resulted in instant punishment from God, but there seemed to be no immediate judgement. The wicked, like a bull on rampage, is said to carry out his wicked acts with impunity. He lies in wait for the innocent and deny the poor of justice. His mouth is full of cursing and deceit. He partners with evil people like himself and together they ignore and forget God.

There are proud people like the ones described in our text today. They live so wickedly year after year. By the world’s definition, they appear successful in business, politics and work. They have perfected their deeds and could avoid being held to account, especially by the equally corrupt system and government under which they operate. The obvious expectation is that they face instant judgement from God but in His mercies, they are allowed to run their course until their cup is full.

Evil doers should understand that no matter how long the game lasts, their day will eventually come. It will be incumbent on them to repent and seek the Lord while His mercies last. Are you at the receiving end of vexatious antics of the wicked? Nevermind, the lamp of the wicked against you shall soon be put out.

Thought For The Day: No matter how fast error runs, truth will catch up with it.

Seeds of Destiny 4 January 2019 Devotional – Desperation for A Lift and Shift

Topic: Desperation for A Lift and Shift [Seeds of Destiny 4 January 2019 Devotional]

Scripture: And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. Genesis 32:24

Thought For The Day: Desperation breaks existence in stagnation; desperation brings elevation.

It has been confirmed that desperation is a demand for Divine lift in life. To be desperate or passionate after God is to be lifted by Him.

Now, how does desperation lift a person? Desperation breaks existence in stagnation; desperation brings elevation. When you come to a point and say, ‘Things cannot continue the way they have been in my life; my life must change’, then you are ready for a change of level. It was by desperation that Jacob changed his levels (Genesis 32:24).

Ruth also changed level by desperation (Ruth 1:17). Even as a Moabite, she was named in the genealogy of Jesse and King David of the royal tribe of Judah, the ancestral lineage of our Lord Jesus Christ by desperation (Ruth 4:17). People change levels by desperation; people experience lifts and shifts in life by desperation.

I want you to take note of two key facts on desperation:
i. Life becomes dynamic when people become desperate.
As long as people are satisfied with where they are, they are stagnated in life.

ii. Changes become drastic when people become desperate.
People change levels drastically in life when they become desperate.

Now, let me give you two keys to desperation:
i. Refuse to die on the same spot in all areas of life.
ii. Refuse to take ‘No’ for an answer (Matthew 11:12).

Beloved, as you take these steps, I see you experiencing supernatural lifts and shifts in life, in Jesus’ Name.

Remember this: Desperation breaks existence in stagnation; desperation brings elevation.

Assignments:

  1. Develop an unquenchable passion for God and His Presence.
  2. Refuse to be satisfied in life until God changes your level.

Prayer: O Lord, I ask that You give me a fresh baptism of unquenchable passion for You. Draw me closer to Your Presence Lord, in Jesus’ Name.

Our Daily Bread 4 January 2019 Devotional – Walking in the Light

Topic: Walking in the Light [Our Daily Bread 4 January 2019 Devotional]

Read: Hebrews 12:18–24, Bible in a Year: Genesis 10–12; Matthew 4

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. John 1:4

Darkness descended on our forest village when the moon disappeared. Lightning slashed the skies, followed by a rainstorm and crackling thunder. Awake and afraid, as a child I imagined all kinds of grisly monsters about to pounce on me! By daybreak, however, the sounds vanished, the sun rose, and calm returned as birds jubilated in the sunshine. The contrast between the frightening darkness of the night and the joy of the daylight was remarkably sharp.

The author of Hebrews recalls the time when the Israelites had an experience at Mount Sinai so dark and stormy they hid in fear (Exodus 20:18–19). For them, God’s presence, even in His loving gift of the law, felt dark and terrifying. This was because, as sinful people, the Israelites couldn’t live up to God’s standards. Their sin caused them to walk in darkness and fear (Hebrews 12:18–21).

But God is light; in Him there’s no darkness at all (1 John 1:5). In Hebrews 12, Mount Sinai represents God’s holiness and our old life of disobedience, while the beauty of Mount Zion represents God’s grace and believers’ new life in Jesus, “the mediator of a new covenant” (vv. 22–24).

Whoever follows Jesus will “never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). Through Him, we can let go of the darkness of our old life and celebrate the joy of walking in the light and beauty of His kingdom.

If you’re a believer in Jesus, how has your life changed since He came into it? What are some ways you’d like to grow in your faith?

Prayer: Thank You, Lord Jesus, for bringing me out of darkness into Your marvelous light. Help me to avoid the darkness to continue walking in the light toward eternity.

INSIGHT
No author is identified for the book of Hebrews. Scholarly speculation regarding potential authors ranges from Paul to Barnabas to Luke to Apollos, and even to Aquila and Priscilla. What are we to conclude about this ongoing, centuries-old debate? First, the very fact that there is so much speculation clearly reveals that no particular view can be totally proven. Second, human authorship is less of a problem if we understand that, by means of the inspiration of Scripture, the ultimate author is in fact the Holy Spirit who inspired it (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20–21).

Kenneth Copeland Devotional 4 January 2019 – Let the World Know

Topic: Let the World Know [Kenneth Copeland Devotional 4 January 2019]

Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word…. that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me…. – John 17:20-23

Over the years the Church has come up with all kinds of elaborate ways to evangelize the world. We get together and map out plans and strategies and raise money for it. But through it all, we rarely mention the plan that Jesus gave us.

Most believers don’t even realize that He gave us the key to winning the world, but He did. He prayed about it right before He went to the Cross. He asked the Father to bring us into a place of such oneness with each other and with Him that the world would know that He had been sent from God.

If you and I and all the rest of the Body of Christ would get together and start loving each other, we’d evangelize the world so fast it would make your head swim. It’s true. But until recently, we’ve been too busy scrapping with one another and getting our feelings hurt to give it much thought.

But, praise God, it’s beginning to dawn on some folks now that we need to stop that stuff. We need to start treating Jesus’ command that we love one another as a command instead of an alternative. We need to drop our silly arguments and be unified by the Spirit of God.

Do you want to take a step toward evangelizing the world today? Then start praying for oneness. Make up your mind that you’re going to start loving your fellow believers instead of criticizing, complaining and talking ugly about them.

Start confessing that the Church of God is going to rise up together in faith and love as one glorious Body driven by the power of Jesus Himself. We are, you know. Jesus prayed that it would happen, and the Holy Spirit is already bringing it to pass.

Satan would like to stop it, but he can’t. It’s far more powerful than he is—and it’s going to blast a hole in his operation that’s big enough to drive a train through. It’s going to let the whole world know that Jesus truly is Lord!
