Methodist Conference explores increased communion with Anglicans

The report was positively received by representatives at the annual Methodist Conference – the governing body of the Methodist Church – which is currently meeting in Nottingham.

The joint report has already been welcomed by the Church of England at its General Synod in February 2018.

The Methodist Conference discussed what difference more communion with Anglicans could make and whether those were in line with Methodist theology.

After discussions, the conference responded positively and asked for more work to be done and reported back at the 2019 conference.

The Rev Canon Gareth J Powell, Secretary of the Conference, commented: “These proposals seek to articulate common ground and to honour the differences between our churches. This is not about each partner becoming more like the other but about discovering ways of being in a closer relationship with integrity, grace and generosity.

“The path towards reconciliation is of great significance to all within our Churches and there are many steps that will be required to be undertaken by both churches as we continue on this process of discernment.”

America Ups the Ante over Pastor Brunson’s Detention

America Ups the Ante over Pastor Brunson’s Detention

The American Charge d’Affaires in Ankara has said that Turkey’s continued detention of pastor Andrew Brunson on spying and terrorism-related charges is impeding US-Turkish relations.

Philip Kosnett said there is a “strong sense of unity in Congress between Republicans and Democrats” on the need for Brunson to be released and “a similar sense of unity between Congress and the administration that in order for the relationship between Turkey and the US to progress, we need to resolve that status not only for Brunson but also for other American citizens and local Turkish employees of US missions who we feel are detained unjustly under the state of emergency”.

According to the Turkish daily Hurriyet, Kosnett said that resolving those cases would improve “prospects for progress” in other areas of co-operation, such as security in northern Syria. He was speaking to reporters yesterday as it emerged that two senators travelled to Turkey last week to lobby Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for the release of Pastor Brunson, whom they visited in prison.

Republican Lindsey Graham and Democrat Jeanne Shaheen met President Erdoğan in Ankara last Friday (29 June) after visiting Pastor Brunson in prison in the Aliağa district of the western city of Izmir earlier that day, the New Hampshire Union Leader reported.

Following their previously undisclosed trip, Shaheen told…

(Photo courtesy Diocese of Orange)Christ Cathedral, formerly known as Crystal Cathedral. Since 2012, the Cathedral has been in possession of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange.

A Roman Catholic diocese that purchased the former Crystal Cathedral building has announced that a “Holy Year of Preparation” will take place in advance of the church’s official dedication next year.

In 2012, the Catholic Diocese of Orange purchased the former Crystal Cathedral building and grounds, notable as the megachurch headed by the Rev. Robert Schuller and his family, renaming it “Christ Cathedral.”

The Diocese’s Bishop Kevin Willian Vann announced a decree last Friday proclaiming a “holy year” in advance of the July 19, 2019 dedication ceremony.

“That, in accord with canons 35 and 48 of the Code of Canon Law, a Holy Year of Preparation for the Opening of Christ Cathedral is to begin today, the Solemnity of the Apostles, Saints Peter and Paul…

Former Baptist Union offices transformed into hotel

L’oscar – the new Central London hotel in Holborn was extravagantly restored by world-leading decorator, Jacques Garcia and L’oscar International.

Speaking to Conde Nast Traveller, Garcia said: “I fell in love with the 19th-century architecture straight away. And within minutes I knew how it would look, how to make this marvellous base sublime.”

The Grade II-listed building was built between 1901 and 1903 and housed the offices of the Union until the move to Didcot in 1989. After being sold to London Underground to make a new entrance to Holborn Tube Station, it lay unoccupied for many years.

The building was briefly used as a hostel for the homeless, but has remained unoccupied after.

It was converted and extended into the 67 room hotel after it was bought by a private buyer having been listed for sale at £19m.

While its rooms and corridors have been lavishly restored, the new owners worked closely with English Heritage and Camden Council to ensure sensitive restoration with many of the building’s period features remaining intact.

The committee room which is now an events space contains a fireplace with an original terracotta carving of a scene from Bunyan’s The Pilgrims Progress.

Disney Pixar’s New Chief Creative Officer is a Committed Christian

Disney Pixar’s New Chief Creative Officer is a Committed Christian

Pixar Animation, now owned by Walt Disney Studios, recently named committed Christian Pete Doctor as their new Chief Creative Officer.

The Christian Post reports that Doctor has worked on beloved Pixar films such as “Toy Story,” “Monsters, Inc.,” “Inside Out,” and “Up.”

Doctor spoke with The Christian Post and shared his thoughts on his new role:

“I am excited and humbled to be asked to take on this role. It is not something I take lightly; making films at Pixar has been my chronic obsession since I started here 28 years ago.

“I am fortunate to work alongside some of the most talented people on the planet,” he added, “and together we will keep pushing animation in new directions, using the latest technology to tell stories we hope will surprise and delight audiences around the world.”

Last year, Doctor spoke with Radix magazine about how his faith informs his work:

“Years ago, when I first spoke at church, I was kind of nervous about talking about Christianity and my work. It didn’t really connect. But more and more it seems to be connecting for me. I ask for God’s help, and it’s definitely affected what I’m doing. It’s helped me to calm down and focus. There were times when I got too stressed out with what I was doing, and now I just step back and say, ‘God, help me through this.’ It really helps you keep a perspective on things, not only in…

4th of July Celebrations at Church ‘Might Work Against Jesus’ Great Commission,’ Warns Scholar

(Photo: Reuters/Mike Segar)A man waves an American flag as he watches a July Fourth parade in the village of Barnstable, Massachusetts July 4, 2014. Barnstable, which is located on Cape Cod in Massachusetts and was first settled in 1639, is celebrating its 375th anniversary in 2014.

Fourth of July celebrations in church seeking to tie being America too closely to being Christian might work against Jesus’ Great Commission and wrongly tell non-Christians they must become Americans, a Southern Baptist scholar has warned.

“I love patriotic music, fireworks on the National Mall, and the country they’re honoring. But I confess I’m not a fan of celebrating America inside Sunday’s sanctuary,” wrote last week author Jonathan Leeman, an elder at Cheverly Baptist Church in Washington D.C., who is also editorial director for Christian ministry 9Marks.

“It just might work against Jesus’s Great Commission,” Leeman wrote in The Gospel Coalition, ahead of Sunday service and of the 4th of July, Independence Day.

The author reflected on Christian gatherings around the world, and asked readers, “should churches divide between nations, or between those who identify with Christ and those who don’t?”

“Church gatherings represent nothing if not a celebration of our heavenly, not earthly,…

How to Choose the Finest (Ripe) Watermelon Ever

Many people have no idea how to select a watermelon. They just knock on this over-sized fruit as if they know what they are doing, it may be good to use, but is it difficult to master the knocking technique. Sometimes we think that unless you’re an experienced farmer, buying a juicy, tasty, fully ripe, and sweet watermelon is hit or miss. However, it doesn’t have to be if you look for a few things when you’re picking out your melon. In fact, you can tell whether a watermelon is ripe without actually cutting it.

Today, we would like to share some tips from experienced farmers that will help you to choose the finest watermelon ever. Enjoy!

1. Look for “webbing”: These web-like brown spots on the watermelon mean that bees touched the pollinating parts of the flower many times. The more pollination, the sweeter the fruit is.

2. Look for the field spot: The yellow spot, known as the field spot, is the place where the watermelon rested on the ground. Ripe watermelons always have creamy yellow or even orange-yellow spots, not white.

3. Pay attention to the size: It is better to choose neither the largest nor the smallest watermelon. Select an average-sized fruit. And note, please: large or small, the watermelon should feel heavy for its size.

4. ’Boy’ and ’girl’ Watermelons: Many people do not know that farmers differentiate watermelons by gender. For example, ’boys’ are bigger, have an elongated shape, and a watery taste. The ’girls’ have a rounded shape and are very sweet.

5. Inspect the tail: A dried tail indicates that the watermelon is ripe. However, if the tail is green, it probably means that the watermelon was picked too soon and will not be ripe.

Justin Welby calls for bold leadership on climate change at London Stock Exchange

Archbishop Justin made bold calls regarding the issue after opening the market on Monday morning at the London Stock Exchange.

Speaking to delegates at the Transition Pathway Initiative (TPI) Summit, he said: “As investors, the Church is aware of its responsibility to make sure that we manage things in a manner that is aligned with Christian values, witness and mission.

“We recognise, however, that we cannot do this alone. We cannot just come in and lecture, then go away. We are one actor among many. And that is why the TPI is an example of how the Church, in partnership with others, can play a leading role.”

Also at the Summit, the Church of England Pensions Board invited participants to work with them in the development of a new low carbon index that would build on the data and analysis produced by the TPI.

Alan Fletcher, chair of the Pensions Board’s Investment Committee, said: “We are committed to doing all we can and creating an index we believe will both meet our investment needs, minimise our exposure to poorly rated companies, reward…

A Campaign to Blitz the Country with ‘In God We Trust’ Laws Takes Root

A Campaign to Blitz the Country with ‘In God We Trust’ Laws Takes Root

As the summer heat waxes and state legislative sessions wane, the Congressional Prayer Caucus Foundation has scored a few small but significant victories.

This year, five state legislatures passed laws mandating that every public school prominently display the U.S. motto, “In God We Trust.” The addition of Arkansas, which passed such a law in 2017, brings to six the number of states with public school mandates, including Alabama, Florida, Arizona, Louisiana and Tennessee.

Those laws, mostly sponsored by legislative prayer caucuses in about 30 states, were inspired by the foundation’s 2017 manual known as Project Blitz, a 116-page guide for state legislators listing 20 model bills of which “In God We Trust” is the first.

Priest apologises after kicking family out of funeral

Fr Michael Briese was recorded on numerous mobile phones arguing with people just a few feet away from where the body of Agnes Hicks, 54, lay in repose in an open casket.

The family is then seen carrying the casket out of the church only to be joined by police officers that the family claim were called by Briese.

Briese from St Mary’s Parish in Newport wrote a public apology to the family that he was sorry, adding: “Two minutes can change a life.

“In an emergency medical situation, two minutes can save a life. But can two minutes erase a quarter-century of a person’s life and commitment to serving and caring for his community and those entrusted to his care? I hope not.”

Hicks and her family were eventually escorted to another location for the funeral Mass, which was performed by another priest.

In an interview with Fox 5, Hicks’ daughter Shanice Chisely said the priest had “disrespected our family, he disrespected my mother. He called my mother ‘a thing’.

“He said, ‘get this thing out of my church! Everyone get the hell out of my…
