Open Heavens 23 June 2018 — Defiance Is Allowed!

Topic: Defiance Is Allowed! [Open Heavens 23rd June 2018, Saturday Daily Devotional]

Memorise: But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.Acts 4:19

Read: Daniel 3:13-26 (KJV)

13 Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Then they brought these men before the king.

14 Nebuchadnezzar spake and said unto them, Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, do not ye serve my gods, nor worship the golden image which I have set up?

15 Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made; well: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands?

16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter.

17 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.

18 But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

19 Then was Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego: therefore he spake, and commanded that they should heat the furnace one seven times more than it was wont to be heated.

20 And he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace.

21 Then these men were bound in their coats, their hosen, and their hats, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.

22 Therefore because the king’s commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

23 And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.

24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king.

25 He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.

26 Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace, and spake, and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, ye servants of the most high God, come forth, and come hither. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, came forth of the midst of the fire.

Bible in One Year: 1 Chronicles 1-3, Acts 15:36-16:15

MESSAGE:

The narrative in today’s Bible reading highlights one of those instances where we can go against secular and religious authority. This story tells of how Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to obey the law of the land. There is time for everything under heaven. There is a time when in order to obey the law of God, you have to disobeyed the law of the land. These three young men were accused and found guilty of religious anarchism. In simple terms, they were tagged criminals because they were found guilty of breaking the law, and the penalty for this was death by burning. Nevertheless, these young men defied the threat of tortuous death in a fiery furnace. Their attitude made it seem as if they had listened to the teaching of Jesus Christ in Mark 9:45-46, where He said;

“45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 46 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.”

As seen in Acts 4:19, a similar act of defiance was exhibited by the early disciples. Peter stood up to the religious leaders of that time, giving them a rhetorical question to ponder on. He asked for their advice on whom to obey: earthly leaders or God. Beloved, you need to be defiant whenever you are asked to go against the law of God. The time to stand up for your faith and values is when you are asked to go against it.

If at the expense of standing up for God, you melt in the face of threats to your life, comfort or career, you cannot call yourself a Christian. Are you in a situation where you are compromising on the truth? Are you falsifying records in your office or business to make more money? Are you collecting bribes before you do your work? Are you covering up for corrupt colleagues or friends? If you find yourself in such circumstances, you need to search deep within your heart and choose whom you will serve today. Serving God means every moment of your day, every action that you take and every utterance that you make are viewed as service to Him. Always be conscious of the fact that your actions at your place of work or business counts as service to God. Your attitude towards everyone around you is also a service to God. I pray that the Holy Spirit will convict your heart and enable you to stand up for Jesus every day.

Action Point: Read Joshua 1:8 meditatively and pray for God’s wisdom to apply His law to your day-to-day activities.

Hymn 16: Stand Up! Stand Up For Jesus

1. Stand up, stand up for Jesus!
Ye soldiers of the Cross;
Lift high His royal banner,
It must not suffer loss.
From vict’ry unto vict’ry
His army shall He lead,
Till every foe is vanquished
And Christ is Lord indeed.

2. Stand up, stand up for Jesus!
The trumpet call obey;
Forth to the mighty conflict
In this His glorious day!
Ye that are men, now serve Him
Against unnumbered foes;
Let courage rise with danger,
And strength to strength oppose.

3. Stand up, stand up for Jesus!
Stand in His strength alone:
The arm of flesh will fail you;
Ye dare not trust your own.
Put on the Gospel armour,
And watching unto prayer,
Where duty calls, or danger,
Be never wanting there.

4. Stand up, stand up for Jesus!
The strife will not be long;
This day the noise of battle,
The next the victor’s song
To him that overcometh
A crown of life shall be;
He, with the King of Glory
Shall reign eternally.

Rival World Cup Players Unite in Prayer after Soccer Match

Rival World Cup Players Unite in Prayer after Soccer Match

Two soccer players from opposing teams playing in the 2018 World Cup in Russia joined on the field on Monday after a game to pray together.

Belgium player Romelu Lukaku, a Roman Catholic, and Panama player Fidel Escobar, an evangelical Christian, knelt on the field after the match between the two countries. Belgium won 3-0.

“Lukaku and Fidel Escobar kneeling and praying at the final whistle was a beautiful moment for many. Both players may represent different religions and had differing results, yet they found peace in what they were doing,” wrote Oscar Flex – Kibet, a digital content creator, on Twitter.

“Love for the game, God above all,” he added.

The image of the two soccer players praying after the game was widely circulated on social media. Many called it the “image of the day,”according to reports.

Lukaku is the star of the Manchester United English Premier League. He scored two of Monday’s winning goals. He has been vocal about his faith, using his Instagram account to talk about it.

In one post from September 2017, Lukaku posted a photo of himself praying on the field after his team qualified for the World Cup.

Earlier in 2017, British tabloid newspapers said Lukaku was Muslim, but Lukaku had publically talked about his Christian faith in years before. In 2016, he was featured in a Christian Today article, “Five Christian superstars of Euro 2016”…

Sex abuse report recommendations will be implemented, Church pledges

The Church’s Past Cases Review (PCR) published in 2010 was criticised for not giving a comprehensive picture of the problem, amid claims that those conducting it refused to speak to some survivors who wanted to tell their stories.

In 2007-09 the PCR looked at more than 40,000 case files relating to allegations of abuse dating as far back as the 1950s and concluded just 13 cases of alleged child sexual abuse needed formal action.

Sir Roger Singleton, who authored the report into how the PCR was handled, said its negative aspects were downplayed by the Church but he found “no evidence of a planned and deliberate attempt to conceal information”.

His report was published on Friday and recommended that:

1. Cathedrals and other parts of the Church with decision-making bodies should conduct an updated review if they were not involved in the PCR.

2. All relevant files not examined in 2008-9 are independently reviewed.

3. All safeguarding concerns about parish employee or volunteer behaviour should be notified to the Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser (DSA).

4. “Renewed impetus” should be given to the recording and cross-referencing of safeguarding issues.

The report will be sent to the Independent Inquiry for Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) to which Sir Roger gave evidence in March.

Bishop Peter Hancock, the Church of England’s lead safeguarding bishop, said: “These criticisms have been…

Best-Seller ‘Jesus Calling’ Is Built on Falsehood, Says Christian Author Randy Alcorn

Expand | Collapse

Author Randy Alcorn has been hesitant to express his concerns about the best-seller devotional Jesus Calling by author Sarah Young. But given its popularity and its recent win as 2018 Christian Book of the Year, Alcorn is now speaking out.

The book is not full of heresies, he clarified. But he indicated that it is wrong for Young to portray her thoughts as if they were the real words of Jesus Christ.

While noting that he does not want to argue that “God doesn’t or can’t speak to you or others,” his big problem with Jesus Calling — which combined with its spinoffs have sold more than 25 million copies worldwide — is that Young presents text as if it were Jesus’ direct words for others.

“The biggest problem with Jesus Calling is very simple: Jesus did not speak these words. If these were His words, then Jesus Calling would be Scripture, which is by definition the words of God,” the author explained.

“So if it’s not (and it isn’t) on an inspired and trustworthy level like Scripture itself, then it’s making a false claim. In fact, regardless of whether it’s biblically sound, it’s an entire book built on falsehood.”

According to the book’s description, the book is a daily devotional based on what she heard from God in her quiet times.

A publicist for Harper Collins responded to Alcorn’s criticism when contacted by The Christian Post, by pointing to Young’s explanation in the introduction to her 2004 devotional.

In the introduction, Young says, “I decided to ‘listen’ with pen in hand, writing down whatever I ‘heard’ in my mind. As J. I. Packer wrote in his book Your…

5 Women Working for Christian Missionary Group Abducted Gang-Raped at Gunpoint in India – Urban Christian News

Five women working for a Christian missionary group were abducted and gang-raped by men who filmed their crime, police in eastern India said on Friday.

AFP reported that the women were performing a play aimed at raising awareness for human trafficking, which is a major problem in India, in the Khunti district of Jharkhand state, when they were abducted by unidentified assailants.

The attackers, who raped the women at gunpoint, reportedly filmed their actions on video.

Police officer Rajesh Prasad said the women worked for the non-governmental organization Asha Kiran, which is supported by a local Christian missionary group.

Prasad explained that police are questioning several people, including supporters of the anti-establishment Pathalgadi movement.

AV Homkar, another police officer, told BBC Hind’s Niraj Sinha that the women headed toward a local mission school after performing their play on human trafficking.

“Around the same time, some armed people reached the school. They abducted five girls from their team and took them to a jungle and raped them. We have dedicated three teams of police to interrogate several people,” Homkar said.

Officials have indicated that the attackers could belong to a group that is highly hostile to “outsiders,” though the nationalities of the victims have not yet been revealed.

“We are still processing what has happened,” said Rajiv Ranjan Sinha of the Jharkhand Anti-Trafficking Network.

“This is the first time field workers have been targeted and it is both surprising and shocking. It is now going to become more difficult to work…

Virtual church launched in South London

St Mildred’s Church in Addiscombe launched the WOW Church (Without Walls Church) website last May.

It has short talks and, unlike most churches, they are not filmed services but are the preachers talking to viewers at home on their laptop.

Leander Gardner was one of those behind the idea, she told Premier the whole idea started a year ago when they were looking at the St Mildred’s Centre she runs: “we have about 1500 visitors a week but when we really looked at how the visitors’ profile broke down we realised that only 0.7% of our visitors were actually in between the 13-25 age bracket. So we were really missing something important there and those same statistics were mirrored in our church congregation.”

“So the idea of running something like an alpha youth project was really a bit of a pipe dream because where would the people come from?”

The idea came about as Gardner thought about her own children and how they spend time online, so the church applied for funding from the diocese of Southwark. The idea was shaped by a focus group of 13-25 year olds, who helped design the look of the website.

She explained how it worked if you typed a question: “You will connect to one of our specially trained chat hosts. We were supported in this initiative by the Samaritans in Croydon who helped us train our chat hosts, and they will chat to you and they will answer…

Stonehenge Builders Used Pythagoras’ Theorem 2,000 Years Before He Lived

Stonehenge Builders Used Pythagoras’ Theorem 2,000 Years Before He Lived

This Thursday at dawn, thousands of people gathered at England’s famous ancient monument, Stonehenge, to celebrate the beginning of the summer solstice. The purpose behind this monument, built between 3000 and 1600 B.C., remains a mystery to historians. But, as Stonehenge enthusiasts know, the pillars of the monument are in just the right location to perfectly frame the rising sun on the day of the summer solstice.

According to the website EarthSky, “[I]f you stand in just the right place inside the Stonehenge monument on the day of the northern summer solstice, facing northeast through the entrance towards a rough-hewn stone outside the circle—known as the Heel Stone—you will see the sun rise above the Heel Stone.” For a stunning image of the alignment, view this article at EarthSky.

A few articles published this week about Stonehenge’s connection to the summer solstice bring up yet another interesting tidbit about the monument. “Many assume that cavemen built the monumental megalith in Wilshire,” writes Sean Martin at Express, “but new evidence suggests that brainiacs could have been behind the building of Stonehenge.” This book, Megalith, takes a look at the geometry of the monument, postulating that the builders likely used the Pythagorean Theorem to build Stonehenge.

The crazy part is that Pythagoras, the Greek philosopher who came up with…

Video of French priest slapping crying baby goes viral

In the disturbing 40-second clip posted online and viewed millions of times by people on different social media platforms, the French-speaking clergyman is seen to get noticeably frustrated as a baby cries as he administers a baptism.

While the child is held by a woman thought to be his mother, the priest grabs the youngster’s face before lashing out and slapping the crying child around the face.

Congregants gasp before a man who is thought to be the father struggles with the priest to release the child from his grasp.

People voiced their opinions on the clergyman’s actions after the video surfaced online.

One user tweeted: “The video going around of the priest SLAPPING that baby during the baptism makes me sick to my stomach. No baby deserves to be hit ever.”

While another said: “That priest slapping a baby video was so disturbing and just plain evil! Ugh I wish I can unsee it.”

It is unclear who the priest or anyone else in the video is.

Christian Death Toll from Herdsmen Attacks Mounts in Adamawa State, Nigeria

Christian Death Toll from Herdsmen Attacks Mounts in Adamawa State, Nigeria

Muslim Fulani herdsmen have killed at least 54 Christians this year in Nigeria’s northeastern state of Adamawa, according to area sources.

In a state where predominantly Christian Bachama tribesmen have formed militias in response to violence by Islamic extremist group Boko Haram and heavily-armed Muslim Fulani herdsmen, Christians were slaughtered in the Numan, Demsa, Lamurde and Girei areas, the sources  said.

At least 15 Christians were killed in the Numan area on May 2 when Fulani herdsmen attacked Bang, Nyanga, Bonki and Nzomosu villages, area resident Harold Wilson told Morning Star News by text message.

“About 400 armed Fulani herdsmen carried out the attacks,” he reported.

Arnold Jibla, chairman of the Numan Local Government Area (LGA), confirmed the attack in a phone interview with Morning Star News.

In the Demsa LGA, herdsmen attacked Gwamba village on Feb. 27, killing 20 Christians and wounding 23 others, said resident Omayan Tambaya Dilli.

“The attack occurred about 8 a.m. and lasted three hours,” Dilli said. “The Fulani herdsmen drove into Gwamba in four trucks and many motorbikes to carry out the attack.”

In apparent retaliation for attacks by ethnic Bachama militia on Fulani families, among the 20 Christians killed by the armed Muslim Fulani herdsmen was the Rev. Haruna Enoch, area residents…

Stop stereotyping Christians in the Middle East as victims, charity says

The charity says labelling the believers in the region this way is both unhelpful and degrading.

Explaining why, Tim Livesey, Embrace the Middle East’s CEO told Premier: “It’s very demoralising and it’s the opposite in a sense I think of what Christians in the Middle East would like us to be thinking.

“They would like us to think that they are in many ways really very special and within the Christian global context, very important – and they are.”

Christians make up approximately 5 per cent of the population in the Middle East – down from 20 per cent in the early 20th century.

However, Livesey said the decline can’t solely be put down to the desire by extreme elements within the Muslim majority to eradicate Christianity from the region.

“Persecution is pretty rare… when ISIS was [more active] in Iraq for example – for sure there was persecution of Christians but also of course of non-Christians,” he said.

Islamic State

“So it’s not to say that there isn’t violence in the region – there is – and Christians, along with people of other faith, suffer from that.”

The charity and its partners held an event in Westminster on Thursday to discuss with Parliamentarians and policy makers what life is really like for Christians in the region.

Dr Souraya Bechealany, acting general secretary of the Middle East Council of Churches said Westerners…
