Tim Keller says being a US evangelical is ‘harder’ under Trump

The renowned pastor and theologian said a perceived conflating of evangelical Christianity and Republican Party politics has fuelled cynicism among non-believers.

He told Premier’s Inspirational Breakfast programme: “The sceptic wants to believe… that Christianity is just another political party – that, really, everybody is in it for power – and so it just plays into their hands [the sceptic].

“That’s, I think, one of the reasons it’s harder to be an evangelical Christians: it’s [more difficult] just trying to share their faith.”

A survey published by the Public Religion Research Institute in April found support among white evangelicals for Donald Trump stood at 75 per cent, compared to 42 per cent among all Americans.

Keller, who stepped down last summer from the Redeemer Presbyterian Church he was leading in New York City, said a perception of politicisation with the Church can turn people away.

He continued: “There’s been a danger everywhere in the West where a church becomes so identified with the political power – that always is alienating to a lot of people

“The high number of white evangelicals who have identified with Donald Trump and the Republican Party, that’s a stronger political identification that’s [sic] ever happened in my lifetime.”

Asked about his future plans, the 67-year-old said he is exploring…

My response to President Trump’s executive order on immigrant families

President Trump signed an executive order Wednesday afternoon stating that families seeking asylum should be detained together when “appropriate and consistent with law and available resources.”

The order maintains the administration’s “zero tolerance” policy for illegal immigrants. It also instructs the Pentagon to make facilities available for the housing and care of immigrant families.

It directs the Attorney General to seek modification of the 1997 Flores Settlement Agreement to allow alien families to be kept together “throughout the pendency of criminal proceedings.” And it requires the Attorney General to “prioritize the adjudication of cases involving detained families.”

In related news, the House will vote today on an immigration bill that would end family separations as part of a larger overhaul. “We can enforce our immigration laws without breaking families apart,” said House Speaker Paul Ryan.

God is “Father of the fatherless”

As I noted on Tuesday, illegal immigration is an especially complicated theological issue.

We are charged by Scripture with obeying the government (Romans 13:1), but we are also to care for immigrants (Exodus 22:21; Hebrews 13:2) and children (Mark 10:14). It is difficult to devise a solution that satisfies law enforcement supporters as well as advocates for immigrants and their families.

I want to focus today on those at the center of the storm: the children. More than 2,300 have now been separated from parents seeking asylum or attempting to enter the US illegally.

In addition, 437,500 children were in foster care in the US by the end of fiscal year 2016. Many are in the foster care system because of substance abuse by their parents. And more than 2.5 million children are homeless in the United States. This historic high represents one out of every thirty children in America.

Of all the demographics in society, children are especially cherished in God’s word.

God’s Son could have…

Joyce Meyer’s Daily 21 June 2018 Devotional — Prayer as the First Option, Not the Last Resort

Topic: Prayer as the First Option, Not the Last Resort [Joyce Meyer’s Devotional Thursday June 21, 2018]

You cause them to drink of the stream of Your pleasures. For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light do we see light. O continue Your loving-kindness to those who know You, Your righteousness (salvation) to the upright in heart. — Psalm 36:8–10 (AMPC)

One day I woke up with a throbbing headache. I walked around with that miserable headache almost all day, telling everybody I met about how terrible I felt—until I finally realized that I had complained most of the day and had never taken the time to simply pray and ask God to take the pain away.

Unfortunately, that response is rather typical for some of us. We complain about our problems and spend a majority of our time trying to figure out what we can do to solve them. We often do everything except the one thing we are told to do in the Word of God: ask, that we may receive and our joy may be full (see John 16:24 KJV).

Thankfully, God wants to provide for our every need. We have the awesome privilege of “asking and receiving,” and we should always pray as a first response to every situation.

Prayer Starter: Thank You, Father, that I can bring every single need to You. Help me to always view prayer as my first option, knowing You delight in taking care of me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Revitalizing a Church When You Have a Power Player Against You – Revitalize & Replant #046

SUBSCRIBE TODAY: iTunes • RSS • Stitcher • TuneIn Radio • Google Play

Leading in a church revitalization can be difficult when one or a few people are working against you. Today, we discuss how to lead through this situation.

Today’s Listener Question:

FROM CALEB

I have a church bully problem. One church member, whose name rhymes with Dodger, keeps making ends runs around decisions I make and is generally undoing things as I try to do them in our revitalization. I guess he’s not a bully as much as he is a foe making power moves on me and the staff.

Episode Highlights:

  • Church members often want change until it means they have to change, too.
  • It’s hard to be negative toward someone when you are praying for them.
  • Sometimes it’s easier to lead around people than over them.
  • When you have a power player in the church, it will inevitably lead to a negative situation in the church.

The seven tips when dealing with a power player are:

  1. This situation is not uncommon, even if everyone said they were on board
  2. Begin with prayer
  3. Try to decide if the blockage is a workaround or clash of the titans
  4. Enlist others to help
  5. Focus on the positive where you can
  6. Be aware of the energy vampires
  7. Only as a last resort, ask the power player to go

prayer helps keep our marriage strong

The musical pair, who celebrated their 21st anniversary last November, say they pray before every performance together.

Speaking with PEOPLE magazine, Hill said: “Tim and I share a quick quiet moment together before hitting the stage. Always praying.”

McGraw, 51, and Hill, 50, met in 1996 when Hill performed an opening act on McGraw’s Spontaneous Combustion tour. They married in October of that year.

The pair, who have embarked on their Soul2Soul World Tour, say they still make date nights a priority, despite their hectic schedules.

They have three daughters aged between 16 and 21.

McGraw and Hill recently released their first album of duets. They previously sang together ‘Keep Your Eyes On Me’ for the film adaptation of The Shack.

Speaking about the importance they place on time on their own, Hill added: “We both have our daily routines and we have our own dressing rooms.

“We each have our own space to retreat to so we do get time to ourselves.”

McGraw said: “Funny, as we get older it’s less about the big gestures and more about just spending the time together at home.

“For our 20th wedding anniversary, we stayed home, in our pyjamas and watched TV. We loved it.”

Norway Took Baby From This American Citizen; She Is Still Fighting for Her Son 4 Years Later – Urban Christian News

It’s been nearly four years since American citizen Amy Jakobsen Bjørnevåg has seen her son, Tyler, after he was taken away from her and put in foster care by Norway’s child protection service because of a weight issue.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, and having spent much of her childhood in New Jersey, Bjørnevåg and her family moved to the Scandinavian country where her father was born when she was 12.

After giving birth to her son at the age of 18, she took Tyler to regularly scheduled check-ups at her local health station. Although her son’s weight curve flattened a bit as she had troubles getting him to eat solid foods, Bjørnevåg never had any major issues with the Norwegian government until Tyler was 19 months old.

She will never forget the day that her “worst nightmare” began. It was July 23, 2013.

On that day, agents from Barnevernet (Norway’s child protection service agency) and police officers went to Bjørnevåg’s home in Lyngdal and forced the young mom, her son and the baby’s father, Kevin, to go to a hospital where they were put on “lockdown” while the baby was examined by a doctor.

The mother was accused of still nursing her son and accused of not “pushing solids enough.” While she was told that Tyler should weigh 22 pounds (10 kilograms) instead of 21 pounds (9.6 kilograms), it was also determined that Tyler had a Vitamin B12 deficiency.

What seemed like minor health issues at the time turned into a life-altering whirlwind that ended with Bjørnevåg being stripped of her parental rights even though she says that the agency never bothered…

North Korean Defector Details Life Under One of the Most Brutal Regimes in the World – Urban Christian News

A North Korean defector who at one point in her life was sold to a Chinese man for $2,300 and spent time in a North Korean prison has opened up about her life in squalor under one of the most brutal regimes in the world.

May Joo, who was born in Pyongyang in 1978 and came to the United States in 2012, shared her story publicly for the first time before a crowd gathered at a recent event in Washington, D.C.

According to International Christian Concern‘s regional director, Gina Goh, Joo detailed how she witnessed the death of many of her neighbors and friends when she grew up. During that time, people struggled to feed themselves and they were given inadequate portions of food.

Although Joo was born in Pyongyang, her family was relocated to the town of Hyesan in the Ryanggang province in 1988, when the Kim regime relocated thousands of families for population control.

“People struggled to feed themselves and often hiked into the mountains to scout for anything edible,” Goh wrote in a summary of Joo’s account. “Widespread famine from the mid- to-late 1990s, a period commonly known as the ‘Arduous March,’ followed on the heels of the relocation after North Korea’s founding father, Kim Il-Sung, died in 1994. Economic collapse, flooding, and loss of aid from the failing Soviet Union resulted in the starvation of countless people.”

The hunger was so severe for many that Joo recalled the story of one father in the Yanggang Province who became so “mentally deranged” that he killed his daughter and ate her flesh just to feed himself.

After getting married at the age of…

Teens Open Heavens 21 June 2018 – Power Of Hunger

Topic: Power Of Hunger [Teens Open Heavens 21, June 2018]

Memorise: Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Matthew 5:6

Read: Matthew 20:20-23 (KJV)

20 Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.

21 And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.

22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.

23 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.

Bible In One Year: Esther 1-3, Acts 5:1-16

MESSAGE:

In Matthew 5:3, Jesus said the poor in Spirit are in the category of the blessed. The poor in spirit are those who are never satisfied with their spiritual state. They are always hungry for more of God; His love, the fruit of His Spirit and gifts of the Spirit. Their delight is in Christ. One major characteristic of the poor is that they have a large capacity to fill. They are insatiable for their quest for Heavenly things, and would not rest until they are filled.

Hunger plays a major role in the distribution of Heavenly blessings. God cannot fill you beyond your capacity or container. If you think you are okay the way you are, you will never move an inch beyond that point. If you do not hunger to know more about God, you will be limited to the little you already know and have of Him. Your hunger will determine your growth level and pace. Ask God to give you real hunger for eternal things.

Action Point: Ask for hunger pangs for the things of God.

Hymn 7
1. I am Thine 0 Lord, I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith
And be closer drawn to Thee.

Chorus
Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord
To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.

2. Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord,
By the pow’r of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
And my will be lost in Thine.

3. Oh, the pure delight of a single hour
That before Thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God
I commune as friend with friend!

4. There are depths of love that I cannot know
Till I cross the narrow sea;
There are heights of joy that I may not reach
Till I rest in peace with Thee.

Commitment In Marriage (Part 2) by Pastor Faith Oyedepo

Topic: Commitment In Marriage (Part 2)

Dear Reader,

It is another wonderful time in God’s presence! It is my prayer that at the end of this teaching, you will be saddled with all it takes to be committed to your spouse. Last week, I shared with you how your commitment to God enhances your marital commitment. This week, I want to teach on: Treat Your Spouse as Yourself.

It is important that you to know that as husband and wife, God sees you as one. Two becoming one is God’s own arithmetic. An understanding of the mystery of one flesh will make husband and wife treat each other the same way. The Word of God says, “And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise” (Luke 6:31). What you cannot do to yourself, don’t do to your spouse. Treat your spouse the same way you want him or her to treat you. Mike Murdock, a renowned man of God says, “What you make happen for others, God will make happen for you.”

If you want your spouse to be kind to you, then you have a responsibility to be kind to him or her too. If you want respect from your spouse, you also need to sow respect. It is important that husband and wife foster the development of each other, promote each other, treat each other with affection and tenderness, hold each other dear, and keep each other fondly in mind. An understanding of the mystery of one flesh will help a great deal to be able to treat your spouse as yourself.

The Word of God says, “For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourished and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church” (Ephesians 5:29). The word ‘nourish’ means to provide with food or other substances necessary for life and growth. It also means: To foster development of or promote.” It also defines “cherish” as “treat with affection and tenderness; hold dear; To keep fondly in mind.” What you sow is what you reap. You must not maltreat your spouse, if you do not want to be treated the same way. What you put into your marriage is what it will give back to you!

Love is reciprocal. To love your spouse is to love yourself, and to hate your spouse is to hate yourself. Some couples so maltreat one another to the point of physical combat. But when you understand the mystery of one flesh, you will never dare to maltreat your spouse. Read this sister’s testimony:

“My husband deserted our two children and I and stopped giving us feeding allowance. He would even beat me whenever he was in town. At a time, he didn’t come for six months. I got to know where he was from the company calendar, and when I got there, he said he didn’t tell me to come. He left me there for three days! I started seeking help from everywhere I could think of – both from churches and ungodly avenues. But things just got worse!

Then an elderly couple invited me to this church. I was touched when the Bishop’s wife ministered on forgiveness and forgetting the past. I prayed and things turned around completely! My husband returned and asked for forgiveness. My marriage is restored and there is now peace in my home.” – Philips, T. (Mrs.)

Most times, I cannot understand how and why a couple should beat each other. That is an extreme case of a person absolutely out of control emotionally. My husband would often say, “A man that beats his wife will be construed as being mentally imbalanced, because he is actually beating himself.” The Bible says’ “For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh”(Matthew 19:5-6).

It takes commitment to God to be committed to your spouse. To be committed to God, you need to surrender your life to Christ. If, peradventure, you are not born again and you want to accept Jesus as your Lord and personal Saviour, then say this prayer in faith: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for delivering me from sin and satan to serve the living God and thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.

Congratulations! If you prayed this simple prayer of faith with me, you are now born again and a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).

With this, you are guaranteed all-round rest and peace in Jesus’ Name! Call or write to share your testimonies with me through [email protected], 07026385437 OR 08141320204.
