Explosion at Indian Restaurant in Canada Wounds 15 People

Investigators were seeking two suspects Friday after an explosion caused by a homemade bomb ripped through an Indian restaurant at a mall in the Toronto suburb of Mississauga, wounding 15 people, Canadian police said.

Police said two people with their faces covered to conceal their identity entered the Bombay Bhel restaurant late Thursday, dropped the improvised explosive device and fled. Peel Regional Sergeant Matt Bertram said an object resembling a pail or paint can was carried by one of the suspects in his hand into the crowded restaurant where children were present.

“There is no indication that this is a terrorism act. There is no indication that this is a hate crime at this time. We haven’t ruled anything out as we start our investigation,” said Peel Regional Police Chief Jennifer Evans.

“Every police resource is being used right now to locate the people responsible for this horrendous act.”

Peel police said Friday all the injured have been released from the hospital. Officials initially said three Indian-Canadians suffered critical injuries and were being treated while the remaining 12 victims suffered what Evans described as minor and superficial injuries. The ages of the injured range from 23 to 69. Children under the age of 10 were present but were not hurt.

The explosion happened just after 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, and the plaza where the restaurant is located was still sealed off on Friday. Television footage showed an injured woman limping away from the restaurant.

“Nothing was said by these individuals,” Bertram said. “It appears they just went in,…

What’s Changing Under New EU Data Privacy Rules

Europe’s new data and privacy rules take effect Friday, clarifying individual rights to the personal data collected by companies around the world for targeted advertising and other purposes.

Years in the making, the rules are prompting companies to rewrite their privacy policies and in some cases, apply the European Union’s tougher standards even in the U.S. and other regions where privacy laws are weak. Although they take effect as Facebook faces an enormous privacy crisis , that timing is largely coincidental.

Not much will change for you, at least right away; companies will keep on collecting and analyzing personal data from your phone, the apps you use and the sites you visit. The big difference is that now, the companies will have to justify why they’re collecting and using that information. And they’re prevented from using data for a different purpose later.

So now companies have been flooding their users with notices that aim to better explain their practices and the privacy choices they offer. EU regulators have new powers to go after companies that get too grabby or that don’t tell you clearly what they’re doing with your data.

Here’s a look at what the rules say and what they mean for consumers in the EU and elsewhere.

___

THE BIG DEAL WITH MAY 25

That’s when the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation takes effect. Instead of separate rules in separate nations across Europe, there’s now a single set for the entire EU.

The new rules apply to all users in the 28-nation EU, regardless of where the companies collecting, analyzing and using their data are…

Venezuela’s Former Oil Czar Sees Economic Collapse Accelerating

Venezuela’s former oil czar said crude production in the OPEC nation will continue to plummet in the aftermath of President Nicolas Maduro’s re-election, as the embattled socialist leader takes the country down an increasingly authoritarian path that scares off private investment and leads to more international sanctions against his government.

In a rare interview, Rafael Ramirez on Friday blasted Maduro, saying that in the wake of his recent victory he has showed no signs of reversing policies blamed for hyperinflation and widespread shortages.

“The demons have been unleashed,” Ramirez, who went into exile after a bitter split last year with Maduro, said in a phone interview from an undisclosed location. “Maduro keeps insisting on the same rhetoric, taking no responsibility for his own actions.”

Maduro coasted to another six-year term in an election Sunday that was boycotted by the biggest opposition parties and condemned as rigged in his favor by several foreign governments. The Trump administration responded by tightening sanctions on the government, making it tougher for state-run oil giant PDVSA to raise badly-needed cash to pay off creditors and jumpstart production.

Ramirez, who headed the oil industry for a decade until 2014, said a purge that started last year and has led to the arrest of more than 80 PDVSA managers, including its president, as well as the arrest last month of two managers at Chevron, has paralyzed oil production.

Since Ramirez was removed from his dual post as Energy Minister and PDVSA boss in 2014, production has tumbled almost 40 percent, to…

One Coptic Mother’s Agony at Trauma of Son Who Saw Islamists Kill His Father

One Coptic Mother’s Agony at Trauma of Son Who Saw Islamists Kill His Father

On 26 May 2017 a convoy of Copts was travelling to the Monastery of St. Samuel in Minya, 170 miles (270km) south of Cairo, to celebrate Ascension Day. Among them were Ayad and his sons, Marco (14) and Mina (10).

“I remember it was a very hot day, so my husband and two sons left early for work in the monastery. They were working on the church bells there,” remembers 42-year-old mother-of-four, Hanaa.

Their convoy was stopped on the desert road by eight to ten gunmen. They ordered the Copt men to give up their valuables, then all, who would not confess Islam, were shot. The boys were spared “to tell the story”.

“I was having breakfast with my daughters when the phone rang,” Hanaa continues. “It was my son calling from his father’s phone. He was crying. He told me they had been attacked and that his father was in a critical condition.”

“I went as soon as I could, together with some family. The ambulance was late, so my nephew Ehab put Ayad in the back of his minivan. My husband was soaked in blood, it was a terrible sight. On the way to hospital Ayad was transferred to the ambulance, but it was too late: he died on the way.”

Hanaa’s grief was immeasurably deep. But, she said, “along the way God comforted me through the many visits of priests and people who stood with me.”

The support was also good for her 14-year-old son,…

JD Greear Calls on SBC to Better Include Women in Leadership, Recommit to Exposing Abuse

(Photo: The Summit Church/Screengrab)J.D. Greear, pastor at The Summit Church in Durham, North Carolina, preaches in December 2016.

The Southern Baptist Convention needs to include more women and minorities in its leadership, said Pastor J.D. Greear, who is a nominee for SBC president this year.

In a Facebook live video posted Thursday afternoon, Greear explained that he had a few things on his heart that he felt needed to be addressed by the nation’s largest Protestant denomination.

Greear, who leads Summit Church in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, said in the video that while “our doctrine and our mission are solid,” he felt the SBC needed to either commit or recommit to doing a list of things.

Among them, argued Greear, was the status of women and minorities in the SBC, which he believed needed to be more proportionately represented in leadership.

“Our failure to listen to and honor women and racial minorities and our failure to include them in proportionate measures at top leadership roles have hindered our ability to see sin and injustice and call it out,” said Greear.

“It’s not that we need a charitably invite them to the table as if we’re sharing something, we need them, because God has gifted them with a wisdom, because of their experiences that we have been…

Two Injured in Indiana Middle School Shooting, Suspect in Custody

Two Injured in Indiana Middle School Shooting, Suspect in Custody

A male student who is suspected in a shooting at Noblesville West Middle School in Indiana has been taken into custody.

Authorities said Friday that the student was detained after a call was made of an active shooter. He has not been identified to the media.

Noblesville Police Department Chief Kevin Jowitt said two people were injured, including a teacher and another student. The two were taken to a hospital and their families have been notified.

Jowitt said there are no more threats to the Indiana middle school but there was a threat targeting the Noblesville High School, where middle school students were taken after the events of this morning.

He said police were on site at the high school. The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were also on scene investigating.

According to Fox 59, the male student suspected of the shooting walked into a science classroom with a gun and opened fire. He hit a female student before a teacher was able to “swat” the gun from the shooter.

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb, who was returning from a Europe trip today, said he was being updated on the situation.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this horrible situation,” Holcomb said.

The Indiana State Teachers Association also released a statement Friday saying, “When is enough, enough?”

“This national crisis has landed in our backyard….

Pastor Shares How to Identify a Prosperity Gospel Church

Expand | Collapse

While there are numerous prosperity gospel churches around the world, they don’t advertise themselves as one. But one pastor is offering some guidance on how to tell if a church promotes the “health and wealth” gospel.

Tim Challies, a pastor at Grace Fellowship Church in Canada and an author, cited Kate Bowler’s book, Blessed, to compile his list and the first thing people should watch out for, he said, is the church’s name.

“Words like ‘victory,’ ‘abundant,’ or ‘conquerors’ provide what may be key information,” Challies wrote in his blog.

During church services, people can also determine whether the language used emphasizes “their core conviction that faith is the instrument through which believers attain their desires.” Key phrases that may be used include “releasing your faith,” “speaking your faith,” or “believing God for” things.

A church’s website is another place one can gain clues as to whether the church may be a prosperity gospel one. Challies noted that if a website “prominently features the pastor,” that may be an indication that it’s part of the prosperity gospel movement.

“Prosperity churches tend to align their identity with their senior pastor,” Challies said, noting that “71 percent of American prosperity megachurches use the image of the…

Open Heavens 26 May 2018 Saturday daily devotional by Pastor E. A. Adeboye – Good Neighbourliness II

Topic: Good Neighbourliness II [Open Heavens 26th May 2018, Saturday]

Memorise: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:Matthew 25:35

Read: Luke 10:30-37 (KJV)

30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.

31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.

33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,

34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.

36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?

37 And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

Bible in One Year: 1 Kings 2, 2 John, 3 John.

MESSAGE:

In Matthew 25:31-33, the Lord Jesus Christ gave us a sneak preview of what Judgement Day will be like, and it is surprising that good neighbourliness is the only standard that was used to separate the sheep from the goats in this narrative. The Lord did this to prepare our minds for the events of the last days when people would become selfish and individualism would be rife. 2 Timothy 3:1-2 says,

“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves…”

May I announce to you that this time is upon us. We live in time when the advent of social media and smartphones has drastically reduced human to human interaction, with the attendant effect that people have little or no empathy and wicked acts are the norm. These days, people hardly know what is going on with their next door neighbour while they are very much aware of what is going on with people thousands of miles away whom they have never met. May the Lord open our hearts to what is needful in Jesus’ Name.

Good neighbourliness involves sacrifice. When you consider the parable of the Good Samaritan, it is easy to imagine what was going through the mind of the priest who passed by the wounded man and did nothing. He might have assumed that the poor man’s situation was beyond remedy. He might have said to himself that it was not in his place to help since he was not a medical practitioner or a law enforcement agent. He might have pondered in his heart that the location was not safe for anyone to delay, and that while trying to help, robbers might attack him and make him another of their victims. He might also have thought that stopping to assist the wounded man would eat terribly into his time, thereby making him late for his important appointment. Although these are all valid reasons not to stop by and help, anyone who is willing to make a sacrifice will set aside all these reasons and help a neighbour in distress. The Church of God must fill the gap created by the deficiency of modern society, which has brought about unemployment, domestic violence, child abuse, divorce, drug addiction, sexual immorality and other unfortunate situations. The Christian community must provide human warmth, homeliness, love and care in places ravaged by individualism, loneliness and lack of trust. As modern society becomes increasingly hostile and dehumanising, children of God must become increasingly accommodating, peaceful, hospitable and caring. Good neighbourliness is a very important fruit of a transformed life and confirms that we possess the nature of God.

Action Point: Plan a course of action to reach out to lonely people around you with God’s love.

Hymn 12: Take My Life, And Let It Be

1.Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee.
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in endless praise,
Let them flow in endless praise.

2.Take my hands and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love.
Take my feet and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee,
Swift and beautiful for Thee.

3.Take my voice and let me sing,
Always, only for my King.
Take my lips and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee,
Filled with messages from Thee.

4. Take my silver and my gold,
Not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect and use
Every pow’r as Thou shalt choose,
Every pow’r as Thou shalt choose.

5. Take my will and make it Thine,
It shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is Thine own,
It shall be Thy royal throne,
It shall be Thy royal throne.

6. Take my love, my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee,
Ever, only, all for Thee.

Pro-lifers Call for Prayer and Fasting as Ireland Votes on Future of the Unborn

Pro-lifers Call for Prayer and Fasting as Ireland Votes on Future of the Unborn

Ireland is voting today on whether or not to repeal the Eighth Amendment which mandates protections for unborn children.

As ChristianHeadlines.com previously reported, “Irish voters will go to the polls on May 25 to vote on a referendum that would add a new amendment to the Constitution overturning the Eighth Amendment, which was approved by voters in 1983 and gives equal rights to the unborn and to the mother. Specifically, the Eighth Amendment reads: ‘The State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and, with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right.’”

LifeNews.com reportsthat Christians and pro-life family groups have been encouraging voters to vote “no” on the repeal. Irish Catholic Bishop John Buckley, who supports the Amendment, commented that, if it were to be repealed, animals would have more rights than humans:

“It is remarkable that the State, which, under the Wildlife Act, has so many legal protections for non-human life, is trying to remove the most basic right of the child in the womb,” said Buckley.

LifeSiteNew.com also reportedon the vote, calling on people to pray and fast that the protections for the unborn would remain in place.

“Please pray and fast especially while Irish polling stations are…

Pastor Who Had Porn Addiction for 17 Years Finds Healing, Starts Ministry With Wife

(Photo: Facebook)Pastor for Care & Recovery at Mountaintop Community Church in Birmingham, Alabama, Greg Oliver and his wife Stacey.

Greg Oliver, an Alabama pastor who lost his job in 2009 after his 17-year addiction to sex and pornography was exposed, has found healing and a new ministry with his wife that seeks to help others overcome the devastation of pornography and sexual addiction.

Oliver and his wife, Stacey, are now members of Mountaintop Church in Birmingham, where he started a new role as pastor for care and recovery in March 2018, according to KRON4.

The former worship pastor said before his secret was exposed he thought he could manage his bad habits. It all crumbled the day he mistakenly sent an email to someone he thought he had a connection with.

“There was the part that everybody saw, who was a music and worship pastor, who was leading the band, leading the church in worship, and then there was the part of me that no one — including my wife knew about — this person had been struggling with sexual sin and addictive stuff, pornography for years and it kept progressively getting worse,” he explained.

“Foolishly I believed for a long time that finding better efforts, better self-will techniques, that I would be able to defeat it on my own, and it just…
