Stephen Pound referred to weekly church services held at the Palace of Westminster and other gatherings where Christianity is explored, during an interview on Premier’s News Hour.

The Labour representative for Ealing North said: “The parliamentary Christian groups now are much better than they’ve ever been in my 21 years [in Parliament].

“We have the Anglican service every Tuesday afternoon at 1pm and the Roman Catholic full Mass service at 6pm every Wednesday.”

Referring to a group which hosts events and discussion groups exploring the relevance of Jesus in personal and political life, he added: “We have Christians in Parliament.

“We have Bible study class on Wednesday mornings – it’s never, ever been stronger.”

Mr Pound was responding to a question over whether the recent Windrush scandal highlighted a lack of compassion in Parliament.

He said the “overwhelming majority” of politicians felt “horrified by the lack of compassion” shown to people of Caribbean backgrounds refused access to public services or threatened with deportation despite having lived in the UK for decades.

The 43-year-old, who still services as an associate minister since embarking on a television and radio career, told The Mirror she was once asked for a picture as a service was about to commence.

She explained: “I once had someone ask literally as we were going into church at a funeral and I had to suggest there were more appropriate moments.”

The married mother-of-two described how her motivation for joining Gogglebox was to change how people perceive clergy.

Referring to the popular Channel 4 reality show, which has spawned eleven series, she said: “I did Gogglebox because I wanted to show that someone who has a religious faith can be fun.

“We go to the pub, we go dancing in Rock City on a Friday night. Everyone thinks vicars aren’t real people, but that’s how we can do what we do.

“We have the same struggles and questions and issues as everyone else, that’s how we can sit down with people and have empathy.”

Speaking of how Christian women have changed the chamber, she said: “The first woman bishop joined us in the House of Lords three years ago and we have two of them now, so that’s fantastic and it really begins to feel that the last bastion of all-male benches is beginning to change.”

The charity has named Olivia Amartey as its new head.

Amartey, who is an ordained Elim Minister with extensive senior leadership experience in the NHS, the Anglican Church and Third sector and voluntary sectors, is also recognised as the founder of Martha’s Oasis, a social enterprise featured on Channel Four’s ‘The Secret Millionaire’ in 2008.

Amartey will be responsible for overseeing the charity’s operations, administration, and strategic planning. She has also been appointed to strengthen Elim’s mission and ministry while ensuring the organisation’s compliance with the legal requirements and responsibilities of the charitable sector.

She will continue as Minister at Crosspoint Church, the Elim church plant she pioneered in Great Barr, North Birmingham, in 2015.

Commenting on her new role, Amartey said: “This role demonstrates that there are other equally and vitally important ways to serve the body of Christ other than in pastoral ministry. As a movement we need the right policies and procedures in place to underpin our mission. Further, we need to deploy sound business practices that empower us to fulfil the mandate to progress the Kingdom of God.

The ex-Blue Peter star’s 40-year-old wife Gemma died in December just three days after being diagnosed with leukaemia.

In his blog called A Grief Shared, Thomas said: “I have had so many messages over the past few weeks. Ninety nine per cent of them have been quite simply lovely, but one of the recurring questions people have asked me on social media is ‘when are you going back to work?’

“However, after many, many weeks of wrestling with the question of what to do, I wanted to put it in writing what I have decided, and it’s with a heavy, but peaceful heart that I write these words: I have decided to leave Sky at the end of the season.”

Thomas has not returned to Sky – where he has worked for 13 years – since his wife’s death.

He said he will leave permanently at the end of the current football season in May.

Discussing his future, he said: “I’m going to be giving every ounce of energy I have to helping my boy navigate this strange new chapter of life and as a Christian, I have to trust God in this. This is not blind faith, this is real faith – and sometimes, that means stepping out into the unknown.”

Thomas, 45, has frequently spoken about his grief on social media, admitting that he is “really struggling”.
