SpaceX has unveiled its new payload fairing catcher in the form of a large navigable platform ship dubbed “Mr. Steven.” Mr. Steven is crucial to the company’s dream of low-cost space travel by saving the company millions of dollars with each launch.
“We’ve got a special boat to catch the fairing,” Musk said in a press conference following the Falcon Heavy launch. “It’s like a giant catcher’s mitt, in boat form. I think it might be able to do the same thing with Dragon.”
The ship serves as a low-cost solution to the high-tech problem of how to rescue the Falcon 9’s payload fairing. The fairing is the shell at the top of the rocket that protects its cargo and costs $6 million each.
By recovering and reusing the payload fairing, SpaceX would potentially be able to save the same the same amount with each launch. And for a space firm, hell bent on spending as little as possible, being able to $6 million is a goal worth acquiring a small ship for.
Mr. Steven is a ship equipped with extended “arms” and a net strung between them. The ship will be heading out to sea to support the Falcon 9 launch which is currently tasked with sending a Spanish telecommunications satellite into orbit. He only has one goal: to catch the payload fairing when it reenters the atmosphere.
With each Falcon 9 rocket estimated to cost $63 million, reusing any part of it translates to millions of dollars in savings for the company. The company’s cost-cutting measures already meant that this upcoming rocket…

HMD Global, the company behind the latest Nokia smartphones is leading the charge in streamlining the Android line by using the Android One software. At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, HMD announced their new partnership with Google by committing to using Android One on their smartphones going forward.
“Nokia is becoming the lead partner for Android One,” Pekka Rantala, EVP and CMO of HMD Global said in an interview. “We didn’t have the capabilities of going for it [before but now] we are going portfolio wide.”
With this new deal, everything at the Nokia 3 level and above as well featurephone-level devices like the Nokia 8110, will come into the program in one go. In addition to streamlining their Android line, opting for the Android One also meant using the new Android GO version for low-end smartphones.
The Nokia 1 is the first smartphone to utilize this “lite” OS which was designed with 512MB to 1GB RAM handsets in mind. In addition to OS tweaks, Android GO also features “GO versions” of popular Google apps that use fewer resources than their standard Android counterparts.
The Nokia 1’s specs are modest at best, with a 1.1GHz MediaTek processor, 1GB of RAM, and just 8GB of storage. Its appearance also evokes an image of a basic device 4.5-inch display (854 x 480) and a 5-megapixel camera.

After challenging Apple in the smartphone game, Huawei has the Cupertino giant on its sights once more. The Chinese manufacturer is currently looking to out-pro Apple in the laptop game with the launch of its new notebook, the MateBook X Pro.
The new thin and lightweight laptop is the follow-up to 2017’s MateBook X. Featuring aluminium body, a chiclet keyboard, and a large trackpad, the notebook strikingly similar to Apple’s Mac.
The notebook also comes in either silver or “space grey” just like its American competitor. But while the two devices look eerily alike, Huawei is banking on its 14-inch 3K LTPS (low-temperature polycrystalline silicon) display in order to make it a best-seller.
“The MateBook X Pro has the world’s first full-view screen in a notebook,” said Peter Gauden, senior product marketing manager for Huawei. “Featuring a massive 91 percent screen to body ratio, which is down to the amount of engineering work we’ve done to reduce the bezels around the display.”
Gauden adds that with a 178-degree viewing angle range, users will be able to view the content on the screen. It’s so good that they will require a privacy screen to keep their documents confidential when in a public place.
In addition to its state-of-the-art display, the MateBook X Pro is equipped with the latest Intel eighth generation quad-core i7 U series processor. Complimenting this is up to 16 GB of RAM and an Nvidia MX150 discrete graphics processor with 2 GB of memory.

Heavy overnight rain tapered to a light, occasional drizzle on Monday morning when the doors opened to the boyhood home of the famed evangelist, who died on Wednesday aged 99.
The rain had stopped by late afternoon when former president George W Bush arrived in Charlotte, North Carolina, with his wife Laura.
Mourners of all races, young and old, some in suits and some in T-shirts and flip-flops, walked through the parlour where Mr Graham’s closed coffin lay on a black pedestal.
They walked past family photos and a cross made of white lilies to see the simple plywood container made by prison inmates. At the door for the first few hours was Graham’s grandson Roy, shaking the hand of every person who came to see his grandfather.
“I just wanted to tell them how much I appreciated the love for my family,” he said.
They responded with stories. Roy Graham said what moved him the most were the dozens who paused and told him the exact moment and place Mr Graham came into their lives through his hundreds of crusades around the world.
Mr Graham’s funeral is on Friday, and President Donald Trump said he will attend. Invitations were sent to all ex-presidents of the US.
Mr Bush said he chose Monday because he had a scheduling conflict with the funeral. He was greeted by Mr Graham’s son Franklin and spent about 30 minutes…

Last year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk wowed everyone by unveiling their new electric Semi Truck. Musk went to make audacious claims that the truck would pay for itself in fuel savings.
As it turns out, he might have been conservative about the big rig’s capabilities. In addition to fuel savings, the semi’s electric motor requires less maintenance than a more complex diesel engine translating to even more savings.
In a recent interview with Reuters, DHL executive Jim Monkmeyer said he could potentially pay off the difference between the purchase price of a Tesla Semi and a traditional diesel truck in less than two years thanks to maintenance and fuel savings.
“We are estimating that we could have pay back within a year-and-a-half based on energy usage as well as lower maintenance cost,” Monkmeyer said in an interview from his office in Columbus, Ohio. “The maintenance savings can be enormous as well. Just because the engines are much simpler in terms of the number of parts and the complexities of the parts.”
These payback benefits are the key to the success of electric trucks. DHL can attest to this, having a history of utilizing electric vehicles on its fleet having already introduced 5,000 of its own electric “scooter” vans for local deliveries.
By opting to use their semi, Tesla promises a 20-percent saving on the per-mile operating costs truckers pay now. Based on current figures, this translates to a cost of $1.26 per mile compared to what it says are industry standards of around $1.51 for…
