Billy Graham passed away peacefully Wednesday at his home in Montreat, North Carolina, and as many took to social media with farewell messages honoring the world renowned evangelist, MercyMe frontman Bart Millard shared a personal experience with Graham that really impacted him.

“I loved Dr. Billy Graham so much,” Millard wrote on Instagram. “Of all the amazing things Dr Billy Graham has done for the kingdom of God, nothing will resonate more with me than that single moment.”

The moment took place during one of Graham’s last evangelistic crusades. MercyMe was scheduled to perform at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, but a week before the 2004 crusade, Millard’s 2-year-old son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Graham’s people supported Millard’s decision to stay home with his son.

“Then we got a call back asking if I’d be willing to have a plane fly to Texas and get me because Dr Graham wanted to ‘hug my neck and pray for my son.’ I looked at my wife who said ‘You’ve got to go!’ So off I went,” Millard recalled.

When he and the band were near the stage during the event in Pasadena, Graham came up to them, shook their hands and “then placed his hand on the back of my neck, pulled me close and started praying over my son’s life.”

Pastor J.D. Greear has named the commandment that Christians of every generation break the most.

“People sometimes think the second commandment (don’t make carved images) is just a restatement of the first commandment (don’t have other gods before God). There is some overlap, but there is also a shade of difference,” Greear, who heads Summit Church in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, wrote on his website Monday.

“While the first commandment focuses on worshiping the wrong gods, the second commandment is actually about worshiping the right God in the wrong way,” he added.

“We break this command and ‘make carved images’ not just by having golden statues but whenever we define God as we want him to be rather than as He is.”

The pastor warned that “there is probably no command we more consistently and routinely break than this one,” noting that people like to interpret God in their own way.

He wrote, however, that God “is who He is” regardless of the ideas people have.

President Donald Trump and former presidents are praising Billy Graham’s life work after the evangelist died Wednesday.

Graham was 99.

“The GREAT Billy Graham is dead,” President Trump tweeted. “There was nobody like him! He will be missed by Christians and all religions. A very special man.”

Graham was a counselor for many U.S. presidents. He also spread the Gospel message on his worldwide crusades.

“Billy Graham’s ministry for the gospel of Jesus Christ and his matchless voice changed the lives of millions,” Vice President Mike Pence tweeted. “We mourn his passing but I know with absolute certainty that today he heard those words, ‘well done good and faithful servant.’ Thank you Billy Graham. God bless you.”

Former President George H.W. Bush called Graham “America’s pastor” and said he was glad to have known the evangelist.

“His faith in Christ and his totally honest evangelical spirit inspired people across the country and around the world,” Bush said. “I think Billy touched the hearts of not only Christians, but people of all faiths, because he was such a good man. I was privileged to have him as a personal friend.”

Graham was counselor to presidents from Gen. Dwight Eisenhower’s term to George W. Bush.
