I saw Black Panther yesterday, which makes me anything but unusual. The movie took in an estimated $192 million over the weekend domestically, making it the highest February film debut in history. It has already grossed $169 million overseas as well.
It is the highest rated superhero movie of all time. After viewing the film, I can see why.
Ryan Coogler, already famous for Creed, directed an astounding cast in one of the most gripping films I’ve seen in years. Part of the movie’s appeal is clearly its amazing action sequences and outstanding performances. But its deeper message is one I believe to be especially significant for Christians in America.
Why superhero movies are so popular
Black Panther is the eighteenth movie connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with Iron Man in 2008. DC Comics has made dozens of movies over the years as well.
Superhero movies are extremely popular these days, in part because the news reminds us daily how much we need protection.
Nikolas Cruz has confessed to attacking Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, one of more than 140,000 schools in the US. In addition, there are more than 5.6 million commercial buildings and more than 107,000 shopping centers in this country.
Most have multiple access points and little if any armed security. The cost of protecting each of them against an armed attacker would be astronomical.
A list of the deadliest single-day mass shootings in modern US history includes schools, churches, businesses, a cafeteria, a McDonalds, a postal center, an immigrant community center, a casino and resort, a gambling club, a nightclub, a navy yard, a street, a movie theater, two brokerage houses, a Buddhist center, a nursing home, and a government center. Clearly, securing every vulnerable location is impossible.
In our post-9/11 world, the promise of superhero protection, even though fanciful, is attractive. But there’s an element central to the plot of Black Panther that helps…

Dagestan is a predominantly Muslim region between Chechnya and the Caspian Sea.

Actress Candace Cameron Bure is weighing in on the intense controversy surrounding “The View” host Joy Behar’s proclamation this week that it’s essentially “mental illness” to believe that “Jesus talks to you.”

Although circumfusion is widely done for religious and cultural reasons, a bill in the Icelandic parliament calls for someone to imprisoned for up to six years if the procedure is not done solely for medical reasons.
The proposed bill states that “Anyone who… causes damage to the body or health of a child or a woman by… removing sexual organs shall be imprisoned for up to six years.”
Cardinal Reinhard Marx, president of the Catholic Church in the European Union (COMECE), has attacked the idea.
He said in a statement: “Protecting the health of children is a legitimate goal of every society, but in this case this concern is instrumentalised, without any scientific basis, to stigmatise certain religious communities. This is extremely worrying.
“COMECE considers any attempt on the fundamental right to freedom of religion as unacceptable.
“The criminalisation of circumcision is a very grave measure that raises deep concern.”

A report says the new all-glass spaceship-like Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California is literally causing a lot of headaches for employees who accidentally keep on smacking into the glass walls.
According to reports, “people familiar with the incidents” said a lot of distracted employees, probably those glued to the iPhones and iPads they work so hard to develop, keep on bumping into the 45-foot tall curved panels.
In 2017, Apple launched the spaceship-like building as a testament to its obsession to design aesthetics. The see-through glass walls, along with the glass “pods,” are a nod to Apple founder Steve Jobs, who wanted to foster a better working environment by mixing solo offices with the overall social area.
In 2011, Job called the building as “a little like a spaceship landed.” After he died in October 2011, the Apple team set out to immortalize his visions for the company, with the help of famed architect Norman Foster. Thus, the new Apple office was born.
Wired Magazine was among the first to be invited to the office when it opened in 2017. In an interview with the outlet, Apple Design Chief Jony Ive said that the technical marvel of the building, designed to house 13,000 employees is not the real accomplishment. “The achievement is to make a building where so many people can connect and collaborate and walk and talk,” he shared.
However, what is viewed outside as an architectural marvel is more of a nuisance inside the Apple headquarters…

The late papal Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini will be canonized this year, according to Pope Francis last week.
The pope last week during the yearly Lenten meeting with the priests of Rome confirmed the scheduled canonization. “Paul VI will be a saint this year,” the pope said during the meeting at the Lateran Basilica as reported by the Vatican News. In his homily during the mass for the Extraordinary Synod on the Family, Pope Francis remembered his predecessor as a “great pope” and a “tireless apostle for his “humble and prophetic witness of love for Christ and his Church.”
According to reports, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints has already approved the second miracle needed for the canonization of Pope Paul VI. The said miracle is of the healing of an unborn child during the mother’s 5th month of pregnancy. The mother was said to be sick, which would put her and the child’s life at risk. Despite being advised to undergo abortion, the mother instead prayed to Pope Paul VI at the Shrine of Holy Mary of Grace in the town of Brescia, a few days after his beatification in 2014.
