Son of Imprisoned North Korean Man Asks for Help, Prayer for Father


David Platt and Kevin DeYoung are asking people to pray and contact Congress over the imprisonment of an American pastor in North Korea.


In a video from earlier in February, Sol Kim, the son of the pastor imprisoned, asks for help releasing his father, Kim SangDuck, otherwise known as Tony Kim.


“Just miles from where the Olympics are being held, this son’s dad is detained in #NorthKorea. Please listen to this video, pray, spread the word, and contact Congress regarding his release,” Platt, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s International Mission Board, wrote in a tweet last week.


DeYoung, senior pastor at Christ Covenant Church in Matthew, North Carolina, also linked to the video, saying: “Worth two minutes to watch and pray.”


North Korean officials in Pyongyang arrested Tony Kim in April 2017.


Sol Kim says in the campaign group Free USA 3 video that his father had just finished a semester as a professor in North Korea before he was arrested at the airport.


“No explanation was given. My family and I have had no contact with him since. He has not been charged with any crime, and we don’t know what is happening to him,” Sol Kim said.

Housebuilder Persimmon boss will give some of bonus to charity after church criticism

Jeff Fairburn said he always intended to give a “substantial amount” of his triple-digit award to charity, and regrets not making his feelings public sooner.

The announcement comes after the company faced mounting pressure from politicians and some shareholders, such as the Church of England and the Methodist church. 

Mr Fairburn said he “profoundly regretted” how the controversy surrounding his bonus had “eclipsed” Persimmon’s strong performance.

He said: “Persimmon’s success as a business and the uncapped nature of the scheme has meant that the value of these awards has become very large.”

Defending his position, he said the introduction of the bonus scheme pre-dated his appointment and he had not sought out the bumper pay awards.

He added: “Once it became apparent that our outperformance would lead to a very significant award for me, I made plans to use a substantial proportion of the total to support the charities that are particularly important to me and my family.

“But, in what might be considered to be an old-fashioned approach, I believed that this was a personal matter and that I would be able to do this privately.

“It’s now clear that this belief was misplaced and so I am making my plans public and recognise that I should have done so sooner.”

Mr Fairburn became eligible for £40 million of the payout on New Year’s Eve.

California High School Bans National Anthem for Being ‘Racist’ and ‘Outdated’


The National Anthem has been banned from California High School in San Ramon, California according to The Washington Times.


This decision was made by student leaders at the high school who deemed the National Anthem to be racist and outdated.


We are all likely familiar with the first verse of the National Anthem, but what you may not know is that the Anthem has multiple following verses. It is the third verse of the Anthem that the students took issue with.


“It was brought to our attention that the national anthem’s third verse is outdated and racially offensive,” Ariyana Kermanizadeh wrote in an open letter. “We had nothing but good intentions by removing the song so that we could be fully inclusive to our student body.”


The line in the third verse of the Anthem that was deemed especially concerning says:


“No refuge could save the hireling and slave / From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave.”


“We understand that this third verse is not included when the anthem is performed, but still, what does this tell us?” Kermanizadeh continued.

“This song was written in 1814,” she noted. “That was written 204 years ago. Imagine all the traditions and laws that have changed … [and] so must our traditions.”

Some, like conservative commentator Todd Starnes, disagree.

Christian lawyer says indicting Israeli PM would threaten country’s peace

Dr Harry Hagopian shared his concerns with Premier following the police’s announcement late on Tuesday that Mr Netanyahu accepted around £200,000 in gifts from two billionaires.

The Prime Minister is also accused of receiving gifts such as champagne and cigars in exchange for helping a Hollywood mogul get a US visa.

 

While Mr Netanyahu has shrugged off the police recommendations, calling the allegations “biased, extreme, full of holes, like Swiss cheese”, Dr Hagopian said the leader should be worried.

“He knows that his premiership is at stake depending on how this whole legal soap opera is played out within the Ministry of Justice and the Prime Minister’s office as well as within the Attorney General’s offices as well,” Dr Hagopian added.

Israeli opposition leaders have called on Mr Netanyahu to step down but the long-time premier has rejected those calls as well.

Nearly all of Mr Netanyahu’s Cabinet ministers issued statements of support. Mr Netanyahu’s coalition whip, David Amsalem, accused the police of committing “an illegitimate act here to attempt a coup d’etat in Israel”.

Commenting on the fact that Mr Netanyahu has been the subject of investigations many times in the past, Dr Hagopian said “there is no smoke without fire”.

However, he said changing leaders right now would be a bad idea.
