While much of America was watching Super Bowl LII and hailing the Philadelphia Eagles’ championship win, a Baptist theologian argued that the sport causes brain damage and likened its celebration to people cheering on gladiators fighting to the death.

Roger E. Olson, professor of Christian Theology of Ethics at George W. Truett Theological Seminary of Baylor University, wrote in a blog post Saturday, the day before the Super Bowl, that the facts are “irrefutable” when it comes to “long-term and irreversible brain damage in many players.”

“Anyone who doesn’t know this simply hasn’t been paying attention. And in some cases, that brain damage has probably led to violent behavior, including suicides and murders, that probably would not have happened otherwise,” he argued.

A study published in July 2017 by researchers from Boston University and the Veteran’s Association in Boston in the Journal of the American Medical Association, for instance, found that 110 of 111 deceased former NFL players had permanent brain damage due to repeated blunt force injuries to the head.

Church leader pays tribute to missing friend

Duncan MacDougall and Przemek Krawczyk were on board the Nancy Glen when it got into trouble and sank in Loch Fyne, Argyll and Bute, on January 18.

A fundraising campaign to raise the prawn trawler from the bottom of the sea loch and recover the men’s bodies has so far raised well over £200,000.

 

Church of Scotland minister Rev John MacGregor said Mr MacDougall, the vessel’s skipper, was a dear friend whom he had known for most of his life.

Mr MacGregor, who grew up in Tarbert, said the tragedy has devastated the village as he appealed to Kirk members in Scotland and further afield to donate what they can to the special fund to “bring the boys home”.

Mr MacGregor, of Cadder Parish Church in Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire, said: “When I heard the news, it was hard to believe that trapped on board was a man whom I have known most of my life.

“Duncan MacDougall will be remembered as a great guy and an excellent football player.

“He played for a boys’ team which I managed over 30 years ago. He was a very outgoing and popular young man.”

Mr MacGregor said his friend – a married man with two young children – had “everything to live for”.

“He was a leader who touched so many lives,” he added.

On the day of the tragedy, the alarm was raised by a third fisherman, who was pulled from the water by the crew of a passing boat.

The trawler is now thought to be sitting at a depth…

Televangelist Pat Robertson has ‘miracle’ recovery from stroke

“I want to let you know he’s back home and has recovered,” Gordon said Monday on CBN’s program, The 700 Club.

Pat had an embolic stroke on Friday. At that point he was unresponsive and his right side was paralysed. Within 80 minutes of the onset of symptoms, Pat received a clot-busting drug called tPA.

 

Gordon said within ten minutes of receiving the medicine, his father was awake and responsive and able to move all of his limbs, with the neurologist declaring the rapid recovery a “tPA miracle.”

Gordon also said God did other miracles the day his 87-year-old father had a stroke.

He said the Holy Spirit told his wife to visit Pat at his home that day, not Sunday afternoon like she usually did.

As his wife was making her way over, Gordon said his wife got a phone call from their son warning her that he was stuck waiting for a train to pass near their home and he advised her to go a different route, not even knowing that she was on her way over to his grandparents’ home.

Gordon’s wife took a quicker route and when she arrived at the home, she almost immediately noticed Pat having early signs of a stroke, particular unclear speech.

Gordon said: “He kept saying, ‘I can’t understand what’s wrong with me, what is happening to me?’ “

Nigeria herdsmen blamed for 75 deaths in Christian villages

According to World Watch Monitor (WWM), herdsmen from a Muslim-majority tribe have attacked 14 villages in the central Plateau state on multiple occasions since 24th January.

The organisation, which reports on incidents of persecution against Christians, also said 89 houses have been set ablaze in the last fortnight.

 

Local religious leader, Jerry Datim told WWM: “Political leaders in the state have failed to protect the people from the Fulani attackers because they fear that President Muhammadu Buhari may move against any politician that goes against the Fulani, who are Buhari’s kinsmen.”

Mr Datim claimed the first attack in the latest wave of violence in the region took place when the Fulani ambushed the village of Rafiki.

The bodies have all been found in the Miango area of Bassa in Plateau. Up to 3,000 villagers have been displaced by the violence, and are currently living in neighbouring Jos North.

Cattle breeders linked to the Fulani suggested the violence was linked to theft of Fulani livestock, claiming hundreds of their cows and sheep were stolen.

Local farmers – from the Irigwe people group – denied knowledge of the missing animals.

A mass funeral was held on Thursday 11th January 2018 for 72 Christian farmers killed by Fulani herdsmen in Nigeria’s Benue state.

Stock market plummets 1,175 points: 3 biblical responses

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1,175 points yesterday, its worst single-day points drop in history. Coming on the heels of Friday’s 666-point loss, the Dow’s gains for the year have now been erased.

Markets are lower in Europe and Asia this morning, indicating that the US stock market could be in for another tough day today. This may be a short-term correction, or it may be a sign of more declines to come. But the recent plunge may already be affecting our health as well as our wealth.

During the Great Recession, online searches for stomach ulcer symptoms and headaches increased by 228 percent and 193 percent. A second study reported that sharp stock market declines are highly correlated to immediate spikes in hospital admissions.

A third study found the stock market crash of 2008 to be associated with an increase in the rate of heart attacks. And data indicates that while suicide rates increased slowly between 1999 and 2007, the rate of increase more than quadrupled during the Great Recession.

Three biblical principles can help us manage our health and wealth in these days of financial volatility.

Trust God with your financial health

God cares about every dimension of your life, including your financial wellbeing. Crown Financial Ministries has identified 2,350 verses on finances and possessions in the Bible. Clearly, our Lord cares about our finances.

Jesus encouraged us: “Do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all” (Matthew 6:31-32). Our Lord healed the sick, raised the dead, cleansed the leprous, and fed the hungry. He was concerned with the physical health of those he served as well as their spiritual condition.

His Father feels the same way about you today. Any loving parent cares holistically about his or her children.
