Jerushah Armfield, one of the granddaughters of renowned evangelist Billy Graham, has argued that President Donald Trump has failed to repent and apologize for his “dehumanizing” remarks on Haiti and other poverty-stricken countries.

“In order to forgive somebody, that individual needs to repent and apologize. And I don’t think America has seen that from our president in any scenario,” Armfield said on CNN’s “Erin Burnett OutFront” on Friday evening.

The author and pastor’s wife in South Carolina took issue with the context around Trump recently describing certain nations as “s***hole” countries, though the president has denied using that specific word.

“I think a lot of times people seem to be focusing on the language that he used, which really wasn’t the issue,” Armfield continued.

“I think it was the context of what he said, around the language that he used. I think it was the disheartening, dehumanizing comments that were said around the word.”

He’s been labelled a hate preacher ahead of his visit to Blackpool in September where he’ll speak at the Lancashire Festival of Hope.

Previous comments he’s made on homosexuality and Islam have led to some saying he shouldn’t be given a platform in this country.

 

Speaking exclusively to Premier in an in-depth interview ahead of the event, he said: “I don’t think I’ve been to any country where everybody was supportive – there’s always churches or groups who don’t like my theology or that we associate with this group or that group.

“I’m not coming to preach hate, I’m here to preach about a saviour – Jesus Christ who can make a difference in our lives if we put our faith and trust in him.”

 

Mr Graham also said his father Billy, who held rallies in stadiums across the UK throughout his preaching career, also faced similar criticism.

“They tried to stop him coming,” he said. “He was due off a boat into Southampton and there were petitions to stop him coming and members of parliament speaking against him.”

Thousands are expected to hear Franklin Graham when he preaches at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens between 21st and 23rd September 2018.

The Paris Church That Doesn’t Want You Using Your Camera

In last week’s Spires and Crosses column, I wrote about the Roman Catholic bishop who complained that every church he visited was locked up.

Anyone who enjoys visiting old churches has had this experience. Less common, however, are churches that are hostile to visitors taking pictures.

Some churches ban flash photography. Others — Peterborough Cathedral, known for its early 16th century fan vaulting, and London’s Southwark Cathedral — have free admission but require visitors wanting to use their camera to pay the equivalent of $1 or $2.

Until now the only church that was a no-go zone for photographers was St. George’s, the historic Anglican colonial-era church in Malaysia. That’s no longer the case, as a second church is now on my list.

When in Paris for Christmas last month I finally got inside of the Église Saint-Étienne-du-Mont.

The Église Saint-Étienne-du-Mont, or, in English, the Church of St. Stephen of the Mont, is in the Latin Quarter on the Left Bank and faces the rear of the Panthéon. It’s maybe 10 minutes by foot from the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris.

Having been built over a roughly 30-year period in the late 15th and early 16th centuries the architecture is a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles, not unlike some other Parisian churches of the era.

The architecture may be interesting, but the real draw is inside.

As soon as you enter from Place Sainte-Geneviève, or St. Genevieve Square, you see it — the magnificent Renaissance-style rood screen.

Hillsong Worship wins first Grammy award

Ben Fielding and Brooke Ligertwood from the group, formed out of Sydney’s Hillsong megachurch, received their award in the best contemporary Christian music performance/song category for “What A Beautiful Name”.

Accepting the award at the event at Madison Square Garden in New York on Sunday, Fielding thanked his parents, wife, children and God.

 

 

He added: “No matter how far or how close you feel to God, no matter how great the distance, his love is greater, his name is more powerful, more wonderful, more beautiful than any other.

“May this song glorify the name above every other name, in the name of Jesus.”

Meanwhile, CeCe Winans’ picked up two Grammys for best gospel performance/song for “Never Have to Be Alone” and best Gospel album for “Let Them Fall in Love”.

Sexual misconduct continues to make headlines today.

Many of the celebrities at last night’s Grammy Awards wore white roses to show their support for the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements. Earlier in the day, we learned that Sen. Marco Rubio fired his chief of staff over “allegations of improper conduct.”

Meanwhile, CNN is reporting that “the fallout from Larry Nassar’s sexual abuse is just beginning.” Rachel Denhollander was the first victim to speak out. At Nassar’s hearing last week, she made this remarkable statement to her abuser:

“Should you ever reach the point of truly facing what you have done, the guilt will be crushing. And that is what makes the Gospel of Christ so sweet. Because it extends grace and hope and mercy where none should be found and it will be there for you.”

She added: “I pray you experience the soul crushing weight of guilt so that you may someday experience true repentance and true forgiveness from God which you need far more than forgiveness from me, though I extend that to you as well.”

How could she make such a courageous and Christ-centered statement to her abuser and the world?

Making God “my light”

Rachel Denhollander has clearly experienced what every believer facing great pain can know: “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1-2).

To choose God as “my light” means that I choose not to live in the dark or try to walk in light produced by my capacities or those of others. This is a humbling decision, an admission that I need God’s light and can trust it above any other.

Of course, making God “my light” does not exempt me from darkness. In David’s psalm, triumph is followed immediately by tragedy.

Pope denounces Holocaust ‘indifference’ amid Polish uproar

Francis’ comments to an international conference on Monday comes as the largely Roman Catholic Poland considers legislation that would outlaw blaming Poles for the crimes of the Holocaust.

The proposed legislation has sparked an outcry in Israel.

 

Francis did not mention that dispute, but spoke of his 2016 visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp which the Nazis set up in Poland during the Second World War, saying he remembered “the roar of the deafening silence” that left room for only tears, prayer and requests for forgiveness.

He called for Christians and Jews to build a “common memory” of the Holocaust, saying: “It is our responsibility to hand it on in a dignified way to young generations.”
