Poor Sales Spell Doom For Flagship Device

When Apple CEO Tim Cook unveiled the iPhone X last year, he touted it as the device that would “set the path of technology for the next decade.” However, a recent leak reveals that Cook’s vision for the smartphone was no match for the free market.

In a report obtained by Apple Insider, acclaimed KGI Securities’ analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says disappointing sales of the iPhone X will lead to the cancellation of the model. Production will apparently cease in summer and will be the first time Apple has canceled an iPhone model after just one generation since the iPhone 5C in 2014.

While the report has yet to be verified, Kou has long track record successfully revealing Apple’s plans. According to him, the lack of interest in the Chinese market is the principal driving force behind the decision.

While no one doubts the device’s technological credentials, a multitude of factors appear to have resulted in a poor reception among Apple fans. Chief among these is the $999 price tag which for some was a little too steep a price to pay for a phone which will likely be supplanted the following year.

However, in the Chinese market, big screens are king and the polarizing “notch” of the iPhone X is seen by Chinese consumers as removing too much usable space. Many have opted to buy the more sizable iPhone 8 Plus which, while lower in terms of tech specs, delivers slightly more in terms of display.

Bolivia’s president reverses evangelism ban after Christian outcry

President Evo Morales announced on Twitter that the government will repeal the penal code that criminalised evangelism and put restrictions on religious freedom.

He tweeted: “We have decided to repeal the Criminal System Code to avoid confusion… and have no arguments, to generate destabilisation in the country…

“We will send a letter to the Legislative Assembly in the coming days.”

 

The amendments to Article 88 declared that “whoever recruits, transports, deprives of freedom or hosts people with the aim of recruiting them to take part in armed conflicts or religious or worship organisations will be penalised 7 to 12 years of imprisonment”.

President Morale’s U-turn on the ban came after an outcry from Christians. 

According to Evangelical Focus, there were protests and some held a special day of prayer and fasting. 

National Association of Evangelicals in Bolivia (ANDEB) called for the Bolivian government to start “preparing a new Penal Code that reflects the social reality of Bolivia” and said a new law should “emerge from a consensus and a social agreement of all sectors of our country”.

The Baptist World Alliance (BWA) also condemned the law.

Tesla Model S Could Become Collectible Once The Automaker Goes Broke

Tesla’s financial situation is pretty much an open secret at this point with the company expected to go down this August unless it receives a fresh infusion of capital. However, there are already some who are planning for a world without the electric automaker.

Bob Lutz, one of the company’s biggest haters, is actually giving the cars some props although not in a good way. The long-time auto executive has a beef with Tesla at the corporate level and believes that CEO Elon Musk, “hasn’t figured out the revenues have to be greater than costs.”

Speaking to an audience of vintage-car collectors in Scottsdale, Arizona on Thursday, Lutz said that the Tesla Model S could be a future collector car. In fact, he told the crowd they should think about acquiring a Model S, “while they’re still available.”

“A Model S, especially with the performance upgrades, is one of the fastest, best handling, best braking sedans that you could buy in the world today,” Lutz said at the forum which was sponsored by the collector car insurance company, Hagerty. “The acceleration times will beat any $350,000 European exotic.”

For the decidedly old-school Lutz, such remarks are to be expected, after all, he repeatedly stated that Musk isn’t running a good car company. However, his recent statements could help the automaker in some way by increasing demand for the Tesla Model S.

Government Shutdown Delays Falcon Heavy Rocket Test Fire

SpaceXThe SpaceX Falcon Heavy has the ability to lift into orbit over 54 metric tons (119,000 lb), a mass equivalent to a 737 jetliner loaded with passengers, crew, luggage and fuel.

The slated test firing of the SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, which has been deferred over recent weeks for undisclosed reasons, has once again been delayed. However, unlike previous instances, people clearly know the reason why: the ongoing government shutdown.

The Falcon Heavy rocket is expected to fly from the historic LC-39A launch pad at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Decades ago, LC-39A served as the launch pad of the Apollo missions to the Moon as well as several Space Shuttle missions.

However as long as the shutdown continues, the private space firm cannot conduct the launch. The test requires support from the US Air Force but too many personnel are furloughed and cannot help the company conduct the firing.

“Due to the shutdown removing key members of the civilian workforce, the 45th Space Wing will not be able to support commercial static fires taking place on KSC,” reads a statement from the Patrick Air Force Base division that oversees launch operations at KSC. “Without our civilian workforce, the 45th SW is unable to support launch operations as well.”

Right now, the rocket is on the pad awaiting an important test at the site called a static fire. The test involves firing up all 27 engines on the Falcon Heavy while the vehicle is on the launch pad. It will then go through the important first steps of flight such as loading propellant and engine ignition.

Church of England bishops reject new gender change service

They rejected the idea, concluding that liturgy currently used when someone decides to affirm their baptism could be adapted to mark a transgender person’s change.

 

The Bishop of Norwich, Rt Rev Graham James said: “The Church of England welcomes transgender people and wholeheartedly wishes for them to be included in the life of the Church.

“On the matter of whether a new service is needed, the House of Bishops has decided that the current service that is used to affirm baptism can be adapted.”

A motion supporting specific gender transition church services was tabled by Rev Christopher Newlands from the Diocese of Blackburn.

How clergy respond to transgenderism has been under scrutiny since the Church of England’s governing body passed a motion on “‘welcoming transgender people”.

The motion, backed by General Synod during a summit in York last July, recognised the “need for transgender people to be welcomed and affirmed in their parish church”.

New guidance on how the Affirmation of Baptismal Faith service will be used to mark a transgender person’s transition is under development.

Bishop Graham added: “Clergy always have the discretion to compose and say prayers with people as they see fit.”
