PODCAST: Whyte House Family Devotional Reading of Charles Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening #24 (with Daniel Whyte III

This is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International with the Whyte House Family Devotional Reading of Charles Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening podcast. This is Episode #24.

Charles Spurgeon was a prominent English Particular Baptist preacher. He was very influential among the Christians of various denominations during his age and even today, and is commonly called the “Prince of Preachers”. After some time of alternately searching for God and running from God, he had a powerful encounter which led him to give his life to Christ. Spurgeon was only 16 when he preached his first sermon and he began publishing books shortly afterward. At the time of his death, he had preached nearly 3,600 sermons and published 49 volumes of commentaries, sayings, anecdotes, illustrations and devotions. Spurgeon said, “encouraging thoughts are like honey to the heart”, and wrote this devotional in hopes that its uplifting messages for each day of the year would bring comfort and refreshment to our walk with God. He was inspired by Isaiah 50:4 which reads, “He wakeneth morning by morning. He wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned” and Psalm 63:5-6 which says, “My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips; when I remember Thee upon my bed, and meditate on Thee in the night watches.”

Job 36:2 reads: “Suffer me a little, and I will shew thee that I have yet to speak on God’s behalf.”

We ought not to court publicity for our virtue, or notoriety for our zeal; but, at the same time, it is a sin to be always seeking to hide that which God has bestowed upon us for the good of others. A Christian is not to be a village in a valley, but “a city set upon a hill;” he is not to be a candle under a bushel, but a candle in a candlestick, giving light to all. Retirement may be lovely in its season, and to hide one’s self is doubtless modest, but the hiding of Christ in us can never be justified, and the keeping back of truth which is precious to ourselves is a sin against others and an offence against God. If you are of a nervous temperament and of retiring disposition, take care that you do not too much indulge this trembling propensity, lest you should be useless to the church. Seek in the name of him who was not ashamed of you to do some little violence to your feelings, and tell to others what Christ has told to you. If thou canst not speak with trumpet tongue, use the still small voice. If the pulpit must not be thy tribune, if the press may not carry on its wings thy words, yet say with Peter and John, “Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee.” By Sychar’s well talk to the Samaritan woman, if thou canst not on the mountain preach a sermon; utter the praises of Jesus in the house, if not in the temple; in the field, if not upon the exchange; in the midst of thine own household, if thou canst not in the midst of the great family of man. From the hidden springs within let sweetly flowing rivulets of testimony flow forth, giving drink to every passer-by. Hide not thy talent; trade with it; and thou shalt bring in good interest to thy Lord and Master. To speak for God will be refreshing to ourselves, cheering to saints, useful to sinners, and honouring to the Saviour. Dumb children are an affliction to their parents. Lord, unloose all thy children’s tongue.

PRAY.

Thank you for listening to the Morning and Evening podcast. If you do not know the Lord as your Savior, here is how you can be saved from Hell and walk with the Lord morning and evening until you go to that wonderful place called Heaven when you die:

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 18:8: “Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

If you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior today, please email me at [email protected] and let us know. There is some free material that we want to send you. If you have a prayer request, please e-mail that to us as well, and we will pray for you until you tell us to stop.

God loves you. We love you. And may God bless you.

Why the library was more popular than the movies last year: Our counterintuitive culture and biblical truth

US adults took an average of 10.5 trips to the library in
2019. We went to a movie at a movie theater 5.3 times, which came in second
place among our cultural activities, according to Gallup.

We might assume that the difference is because of movie home
streaming services, but books are more available through iPads and other
devices than ever before. Perhaps Americans want to experience the ambiance of
a library; but seeing a movie in a theater is an experience you can’t fully
replicate at home, either.

It turns out, people between the ages of eighteen and twenty-nine visit the library much more than other groups. That seems like good news for the future of books and libraries.

However, Gallup says this is probably because people in college frequent the library to study. Countering this good news, people between the ages of eighteen and twenty-nine also visit casinos the most.

All this to say, explaining the culture is complex. Few
trends have single causes. Few facts have single sources.

We can see why postmodern people claim that all truth is
personal and subjective. But such a claim is inherently contradictory
(“there is no such thing as absolute truth and I’m absolutely sure of
it”). And it belies a larger issue at work here.

Just because something is complex doesn’t make it
subjective. I would guess that the functions of your car’s engine are more
complicated than you could easily comprehend. (I stopped working on my own car
when I sold my 1965 Mustang many years ago.) The fact that I don’t understand
how my laptop works doesn’t mean that computer engineers share my confusion.

Living in a complex world actually requires more
foundational commitments, not fewer.

No Room for Pro-Lifers in Democratic Party, Sanders Says: Abortion Rights Are ‘Essential’

No Room for Pro-Lifers in Democratic Party, Sanders Says: Abortion Rights Are ‘Essential’

Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders suggested Saturday there is no room for pro-lifers in the Democratic Party, calling the pro-choice position a “central part” of being a Democrat.

Sanders, a U.S. senator from Vermont who is running for the Democratic nomination, was asked in a forum, “Is there such a thing as a pro-life Democrat in your vision of the party?”

“I think being pro-choice,” Sanders responded, “is an absolutely essential part of being a Democrat. … In the Senate, probably 95 percent of the Democrats are pro-choice. You have a few who are not in the House [but it] may be even a higher percentage.”

He added, “By this time in history, I think when we talk about what a Democrat is, I think being pro-choice is … a central part of that.”

Sanders made the comments in an “Our Rights, Our Courts” forum sponsored by several abortion rights groups, including the Center for Reproductive Rights and NARAL Pro-Choice America.

The previous day, Sanders pledged to nominate only justices who support abortion rights if he is elected president.

“I will never nominate any person to the Supreme Court or the federal courts in general who is…

PODCAST: The Scripture & The Sense Podcast #409: Amos 1:6 (with Daniel Whyte III

This is Daniel Whyte III with The Scripture & The Sense Podcast #409, where I read the Word of God and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as the Bible Knowledge Commentary. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.

Today we are reading Amos 1:6.

6 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom:

________

That was Amos 1:6. Now here is the sense of it.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary reads:

In verses 6–8 four of the five cities comprising the Philistine pen-ta-polis are mentioned—Gaza, Ash-dod, Ash-ke-lon, and Ek-ron. The omission of the fifth, Gath, may be due to its ruined condition at the time of Amos because of the batterings of Ha-za-el in 815 b.c. and Uz-zi-ah in 760 b.c. The Philistines’ crime against humanity was that they captured whole communities in slave raids and sold them for commercial profit. Defenseless people were treated as mere objects and auctioned off in the slave markets of Edom, from which they were shipped to other parts of the world.

____________

Thank you for listening to the Scripture & The Sense Podcast. Remember to read the Word of God each and every day and pray without ceasing to God for wisdom to understand it and apply it to your life. Most importantly, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. Please stay tuned for a complete presentation of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ so that you can get your soul saved from Hell to that wonderful place called Heaven when you die. May God bless you and keep you is my prayer.

PODCAST: No Animal Foods, Part 1 (Overcoming the Acceptable Christian Sin of Gluttony #39 with Daniel Whyte III

Overcoming the Acceptable Christian Sin of Gluttony #39

Welcome to the Overcoming the Acceptable Christian Sin of Gluttony podcast, a companion podcast to the Acceptable Christian Sin of Gluttony message series. My name is Daniel Whyte III president of Gospel Light Society International. The purpose of this podcast is to share with you, from a biblical perspective, the means by which we can combat and overcome the sin of gluttony and its outcome of obesity.

Our passage from the Word of God today is Proverbs 23:20-21 which reads: “Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.”

Now, let’s look at gluttony and its effects in the news: According to The Times of India, the first thing that comes to our mind when we talk about overeating is weight gain. But that’s not all, according to a new study, overeating doesn’t just make the number on the scale go up but also damages the important regions of your brain, leading to brain damage. The research used a technique called diffusion tensor imaging, which compared the brains of 59 obese adolescents with 61 healthy adolescents. DTI is the new technology that tracks the diffusion of water along with the white matter of the brain. White matter is the nerve-fibre-rich matter found in the deeper tissues of the brain. The researchers derived the fractional anisotropy of these people, which was correlated with the condition of the white matter in the brain. The lower the FA, the more damaged was the white matter. On comparing the FA values of all the participants, it was seen that obese people had lower levels of FA. The brain change caused in obese people due to the lower levels of FA was related to important regions that are responsible for controlling the emotions, appetite and cognitive functions. This same brain damage was caused by increased blood sugar and insulin resistance. The study even showed a positive relation between brain damage and hormones like leptin (which regulates hunger and stores fat) and insulin. In short, obesity causes inflammation that can lead to brain damage, increased blood sugar levels, insulin resistance and leptin resistance.

In this podcast, we are going through the book, The RAVE Diet and Lifestyle: The Natural Foods Diet With Meals that Heal, by Mike Anderson. This section is titled: No Animal Foods, Part 1:

William Clifford Roberts, M.D., Editor-in-Chief, American Journal of Cardiology, said, “When we kill animals to eat them, they end up killing us because their flesh, which contains cholesterol and saturated fat, was never intended for human beings, who are natural herbivores.”

William Connor, M.D., The New American Diet, said, “No one can contemplate directly eating 13 pats of butter, but they essentially do when they eat a cheeseburger.”

The Scientific American, 1892, said, “Cancer is most frequent where carnivorous habits prevail.”

All animal foods are excluded from the RAVE Diet because they promote the major degenerative diseases sweeping across the country. The link between animal foods and cancer, for example, begins back in 1892 with a study published in the Scientific American from which the quote above is taken. Subsequently, there has been a mountain of evidence compiled that confirms the link.

The only thing you’ll miss from eating animal foods is the saturated fat, cholesterol and animal proteins – as well as the diseases these ingredients bring to your body. When you come right down to it, all our nutrients are ultimately obtained from plant foods. Meat-eating animals (including humans) feed off plant-eating animals, which really amount to storage systems for plant nutrients. The problem, of course, is that the plant nutrients in animals are delivered in a package of saturated fat and cholesterol. So why eat animals when you can get everything you need directly from plants – without the cholesterol – and in a low-fat package with healthy fiber and cancer-fighting chemicals to boot?

And calorie for calorie, plant foods are far richer in nutrients than animal foods, with green vegetables being the most nutrient-rich foods on the planet.

From a weight loss perspective, many studies have confirmed that over time, the more people eat meat, the more they gain weight. The more people eat whole plant foods, the less likely they are to gain weight. In a recent multi-nation study, it was found that without exception, the thinnest people ate a complex carbohydrate diet, while the fattest people ate a meat-based diet. Eliminating meat from your diet is essential if you want to achieve your ideal weight, reverse heart disease and protect yourself against cancers and our major degenerative diseases.

We will continue looking at this topic in our next podcast.

— PRAYER —

Now, in this series, as we focus on overcoming the sin of gluttony, and managing our bodies as God intended, we must not lose sight of the most important part of our existence — our spiritual life. Even those of you who are fit, who eat right, and who exercise regularly must still address the condition of your soul. You may keep your body in perfect condition till the day you die, but you will still die — we all will, and the only thing that will matter is the condition of your soul. Is your soul in shape? Is your soul in right standing with God?

The only way to make sure of that is to trust Jesus Christ as your Savior from sin and the consequences of sin. He alone can save your soul, put you in right standing with God, and ensure that you do not perish in Hell. Now, if you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, believe in your heart that Jesus died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him.

Until next time, may God bless you and keep you is my prayer.

99-Year-Old Has Read Through Bible 60 Times: ‘Might as Well Make it 61’

99-Year-Old Has Read Through Bible 60 Times: ‘Might as Well Make it 61’

A 99-year-old Tennessee church member who has read through the Bible 60 times recently embarked on her 61st journey through Scripture because, she says, “God shows me something new every time.”

The woman, known as “Miss Helen” to members of her congregation at The Church at Station Hill, in Spring Hill, Tenn., began reading through the Bible the 61st time after learning of a challenge by pastor Jay Strother, who urged church members to read through the Bible in one year.

The Baptist & Reflector recounted the inspiring story. The Bible-reading plan is part of Strother’s “The Whole Church in the Whole Word” challenge.

“I’ve been through the Bible 60 times and I might as well make it 61,” she told Strother.

The U.S. was embroiled in World War II the first time she read through the Bible. The challenge that year was “Read the Bible through in ’42.”

Miss Helen still attends the Sunday morning 8 a.m. service, in person, the Baptist & Reflector reported.

Strother asked her, “Miss Helen, why do you still do it?” She replied, “God shows me something new every time.”

“She said you’d think I’ve heard these stories, but every time I read it or hear it being read, I catch something new,” Strother told the Baptist & Reflector.

Miss Helen’s commitment to reading Scripture, Strother said, should convict and inspire other Christians to read their Bible.

“You…

Ken Weathersby Leaves Legacy of Church Planting and Missionary Work Among Baptists as He Moves on to New Stage of Ministry

Ken Weathersby has held many different titles; however, he has always had the same role.

“The role is servant,” said Weathersby, former vice president for Convention advancement for the SBC Executive Committee.

From his work with the Tennessee Baptist Convention, the North American Mission Board, the SBC Executive Committee, and others, Weathersby remained emphatic that the point of his work and therefore his service was to spread the Gospel of Christ, not for the benefit of his own personal gain.

”It’s all about the Kingdom of God,” Weathersby said. “My focus has never been about me. My focus has always been about serving churches.”

Weathersby broke new ground in nearly every position he held.

He was the first African American pastor to hold a full-time associate professorship at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, where he was director of the Cecil B. Day Center for Church Planting and director of the Nehemiah Project.

Marshal Ausberry, first vice president for the SBC, noted that Weathersby built many bridges for the Convention.

“We can truly call Ken a trailblazer,” Ausberry said. “We celebrate Ken and the accomplishments God has allowed him to achieve within the SBC.”

Some of his other roles include manager of African American church planting at NAMB as well as senior strategist for evangelism and vice president for church planting. He also served as the associate vice president for multi-ethnic mobilization.

“Ken has helped bring people of various ethnicities together and he has worked tirelessly to make positive inroads for all people groups within the SBC,” Ausberry said.

Weathersby said that he desired to go wherever God called him in order to have a long-lasting Kingdom impact.

“God called me to Himself, and so whatever He wants to do I would do,” Weathersby said. “I love the opportunity to see people come to know Christ, so my heart and my passion is to assist the local church in making disciples among all the nations, encouraging them to be involved in missionary activities, training indigent leaders, and networking for evangelism that results in church revitalization.”

Weathersby noted that during his time at the SBC, great strides were made in creating an inclusive culture—breaking barriers of culture, race, and generations for the cause of the Gospel.

“Oftentimes we highlight the challenges of the past and we do not recognize the impact the Convention has made in race relations,” Weathersby said. “The SBC is now the most ethnically diverse denomination of congregations in the United States, and many people do not realize that.”

Weathersby said that when he first joined the SBC there were around five hundred predominantly African American churches. Now, there are around four thousand.

Weathersby credits this substantial growth to SBC’s emphasis on church planting.

”We have intentionally worked to mobilize churches to reach the nations,” Weathersby said. “Many people do not realize that the majority of our ethnic congregations across the SBC were planted by our predominantly Anglo congregations. Our Anglo churches have been the Send Churches needed to plant those churches.”

This missional mindset has resulted in crossing cultural lines in order for new churches to be planted, creating the diversity within the SBC church community.

Explaining his motivation ministry, Weathersby said that his ultimate desire is to give everyone an opportunity to hear the Gospel.

“I want to make sure Christ’s name is known,” Weathersby said. “I believe every believer ought to be sharing the good news of Christ.”

Moving forward, Weathersby said he is confident the SBC will continue down the path of inclusive church planting that cultivates even greater diversity.

“We have leaders across all ethnic lines who are prepared, who are ready, who are taking the baton and will take on the mission of making Christ known in North American and across the world,” Weathersby said.

Africa University and the AME Church’s 20th Episcopal District Announce New Partnership

Africa University and the 20th Episcopal District are partnering to increase access to higher education for students in East and Southern Africa. The groundbreaking collaboration—a first for the 20th Episcopal District—provides a pathway for graduates of AME schools in five African countries to matriculate at Africa University.

The 20th Episcopal District will enroll seven students each year, beginning in March 2020. An anonymous gift of $700,000, given to Africa University, will provide most of the funding to educate 28 students from the 20th Episcopal District over a seven-year period. However, the District will need to raise additional funds to invest in the initiative. “I am very excited about the partnership because in the 20th Episcopal District—which is made up of the countries of Uganda, Tanzania, Northwest Mozambique, Malawi, and Zimbabwe—we have 35 AME schools,” said Bishop Ronnie Elijah Brailsford, Sr., who was assigned as the presiding prelate in July 2016. “Six of those schools are high schools,” said Brailsford. “We do not have a university or college, so this provides an opportunity for many of our students from the various countries to get a good education,” he continued.

The Education Empowerment Project within the 20th Episcopal District—especially involving women, girls, and orphans—is imperative for Bishop Brailsford and his wife, the Rev. Carolyn E. Brailsford, who serves the district as their Episcopal supervisor. The partnership with Africa University is a natural extension of the Education Empowerment Project of the 20th Episcopal District Women’s Missionary Society, under the leadership of the Rev. Brailsford. The Project already provides scholarships and school supplies for primary to college students.

According to Bishop Brailsford, “the minds we help to shape today will help to shape the world tomorrow.” Opening new opportunities for Africa-focused and high-quality professional and leadership training in a church-related setting is a logical and crucial next step for the Brailsfords.

“Seeing them (the students) become the persons that they are meant to be, instead of the usual or expected reality of being married or becoming pregnant and starting motherhood at age 13 or 14, is the greatest joy,” said the Rev. Brailsford. “Too often, after girls and orphans complete the 8th Grade, they are done. There’s no one to invest in them so that they move forward in their education. However, given a chance and the necessary support through these mission efforts, we are seeing them enroll in college, graduate, and start their own businesses. They are taking charge of their lives and I can’t think of anything better than that,” she added.

Bishop Brailsford made his first visit to the Africa University’s main campus in October 2019. While there, he met with the AU Board chair, directors, and senior administrators who highlighted international student recruitment as a high priority and area of intense focus for the institution over the next five years. “We are sister churches, born of the same Wesleyan tradition into the global Methodist family, so for us to come together like this is really mutually-beneficial,” said the AU Board Chair, Bishop Mande Muyombo.

For Muyombo and the Brailsfords, this partnership exploits a natural fit between what Africa University’s ministry provides and the emerging needs of the communities served by the 20th Episcopal District. “I really see this as a divine opportunity that God has put our two entities together for the betterment of the children of Africa and what can happen for their future,” said Bishop Brailsford. “At its heart, our shared mission is to equip people to think and do for themselves, uplift their communities, and see God’s promise of abundant life realized in the world,” Muyombo added.

“It is a tremendous partnership for Africa University that God delivered,” said James H. Salley, the Institution’s Chief Advancement Officer. Salley and Brailsford are both South Carolinians and they have been talking about Africa University for years. “I’ve been asking Bishop Brailsford to come and see us,” said Salley. “He finally did and a vision for the AME Church to collaborate with Africa University in recruiting international students has taken shape. It is timely and extremely helpful to Africa University’s strategic plan and efforts to significantly increase the enrollment of international students,” he added.

Starbucks Promotes Transgender Agenda in #WhatsYourName Commercial

A new commercial from Starbucks is attempting to raise awareness of the daily challenges faced by the transgender youth.

The advertisement aired during the first week of February and aims to show people that Starbucks welcomes everyone, regardless of who you are or want to be.

At Starbucks, writing your name on a cup and calling it out is a symbol of our warm welcome. Starbucks welcomes you, whoever you are. #whatsyourname Find out more at https://t.co/6BrvpLfKZb pic.twitter.com/w1ge3ZKu0C

— Starbucks UK (@StarbucksUK) February 2, 2020

The 90-second commercial starts out like a story, showing a trans teen who is referred to as “Jemma” during different times of the day.

At the end of the ad, the teen goes to Starbucks where the barista asks for a name.

“It’s James,” the teen responds with a smile. The employee writes “James” on the cup and the words “every name’s a story” appear on the screen.

The coffee giant launched the commercial as part of the #WhatsYourName campaign.

“Taking a customer’s name, writing it on a cup and calling it out is a symbol of our warm welcome. It is part of the Starbucks experience and creates a moment of connection between our baristas and customers,” a Starbucks release said.

“Starbucks #whatsyourname campaign celebrates this signature act and the significance it can have for some transgender and gender diverse people as they use their new name in public.”

To further expand their support for the transgender community, the coffee company has partnered with the charity Mermaids UK – a group that supports trans children by selling mermaid cookies in UK stores.

Mermaids supports gender-diverse children, young adults and their families until their 20th birthday.

It is one of the UK’s leading LGBTQ charities and has faced criticism in the past for their push to reverse the nationwide ban on children receiving cross-sex hormones.

In the US, lawmakers in states like Florida and South Dakota are launching efforts to prevent sex change hormone treatments and surgeries for minors. They contend that gender confusion can clear up after the teenage years, so it’s wrong to allow treatments that could end up being an irreversible mistake.

CBN News has previously reported that some doctors also warn that the side effects of opposite-sex hormones are very dangerous and can cause blood clots, cardiovascular issues, and place people at risk for cancer.

On the other side, in a 2016 interview, Mermaids CEO Susie Green told The Guardian that use of opposite-sex hormones should not be based on a young person’s age – rather their maturity level.

National Review’s Madeleine Kearns called the combined campaign “shameful” and said that Mermaids “peddles dangerous nonsense to vulnerable children and families, using the ultimate emotional blackmail of suicide.”

Kearns explained that Green “took her own gender-confused son Jack” to Thailand for a procedure that is “illegal in Britain and now illegal in Thailand.”

US Charges 4 Chinese Military Members in Equifax Breach

WASHINGTON (AP) — Four members of the Chinese military have been charged with breaking into the networks of the Equifax credit reporting agency and stealing the personal information of tens of millions of Americans, the Justice Department said Monday, blaming Beijing for one of the largest hacks in history to target consumer data.

The 2017 breach affected more than 145 million people, with the hackers successfully stealing names, Social Security numbers and other personal information stored in the company’s databases.

The four — members of the People’s Liberation Army, an arm of the Chinese military — are also accused of stealing the company’s trade secrets, including database designs, law enforcement officials said. The accused hackers exploited a software vulnerability that enabled them to obtain login credentials and navigate the company’s network while searching for personal information.

The case comes as the Trump administration has warned against what it sees as the growing political and economic influence of China, and efforts by Beijing to collect data on Americans and steal scientific research and innovation. The administration has also been pressing allies not to allow Chinese tech giant Huawei to be part of their 5G wireless networks due to cybersecurity concerns.

The accused hackers are based in China and none is in custody. But U.S. officials nonetheless view the criminal charges as a powerful deterrent to foreign hackers and a warning to other countries that American law enforcement has the capability to pinpoint individual culprits behind hacks.

“This was a deliberate and sweeping intrusion into the private information of the American people,” Attorney General William Barr said in a statement Monday announcing the case.

“Today, we hold PLA hackers accountable for their criminal actions, and we remind the Chinese government that we have the capability to remove the Internet’s cloak of anonymity and find the hackers that nation repeatedly deploys against us,” he added.

The case is one of several the Justice Department has brought over the years against members of the PLA. The Obama administration in 2014 charged five Chinese military hackers with breaking into the networks of major American corporations to siphon trade secrets.

Full Coverage: Technology

A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy did not immediately return an email seeking comment Monday.

The criminal charges were filed in federal court in Atlanta, where the company is based. Equifax last year reached a $700 million settlement over the data breach, with the bulk of the funds intended for consumers affected by it.

The indictment details efforts the hackers took to cover their tracks, including wiping log files on a daily basis and routing traffic through dozens of servers in nearly 20 countries. It includes charges of conspiracy to commit computer fraud, conspiracy to commit economic espionage and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Equifax didn’t notice the intruders targeting its databases for more than six weeks. Hackers exploited a known security vulnerability that Equifax hadn’t fixed.

Once inside the network, officials said, the hackers were able to download and exfiltrate data from Equifax to computers outside the United States.

According to the Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress, a server hosting Equifax’s online dispute portal was running software with a known weak spot. The hackers jumped through the opening to reach databases containing consumers’ personal information.

Equifax officials told GAO the company made many mistakes, including having an outdated list of computer systems administrators. When the company circulated a notice to install a patch for the software vulnerability, the employees responsible for installing the patch never got it.

Equifax’s $700 million settlement with the U.S. government gives affected consumers free credit-monitoring and identity-restoration services, plus money for their time or reimbursement for certain services. However, because so many people made claims, officials said some consumers would get far less than the eligible amounts because of caps in the settlement pool.
