‘Children Should Not Be Allowed to Medically Change Their Genders,’ Says Johns Hopkins Professor

A psychiatry professor at Johns Hopkins University says children should not be allowed to medically change their genders because the treatments are similar to a “frontal lobotomies.”

“[Doctors] don’t have evidence that [the treatment] will be the right one,” said Dr. Paul McHugh, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. “Many people are doing what amounts to an experiment on these young people without telling them it’s an experiment,” CBN News reports.

“You need evidence for that, and this is a very serious treatment. It is comparable to doing frontal lobotomies.”

McHugh said there could be longterm negative impacts in using the hormonal treatments used for gender transitions, which McHugh says are “reckless and irresponsible.”

McHugh said he believes that children struggling with gender dysphoria are likely dealing with mental health issues or “being driven by psychological and psychosocial problems.”

“I think their mental problems, often depression, discouragement, are the things that need treatment,” he said. “I’m not positive about this. It’s a hypothesis, but it is a very plausible hypothesis, and it would explain why many of the people who go on to have treatment of their body discover they are just as depressed, discouraged, and live just as…

BBC to go inside the Vatican in documentary starting Friday night

It gives an insight into the lives behind closed doors of Pope Francis and some of his highest ranking officials, the choristers of the Sistine Chapel and the papal gardener.

Airing at 9pm on BBC 2, the first episode follows the build up to Easter in Pope Francis’ fifth year in the role.

Christopher Lamb, Rome correspondent for Catholic magazine The Tablet, and consultant and commentator on the programme, told Premier: “I think it shows a unique picture of the Vatican – one that is very rarely seen, if ever seen, of the people who live and work there and seek to serve in the Vatican in the Roman Curia and it presents both the high level officials and it also shows the gardeners who work in the Vatican gardens and the people who work inside the church, doing very menial tasks.

“I think it shows the whole picture of the Vatican. It’s not about trying to come with a pre-conceived agenda. It does get into some of the big issues around the opposition that Pope Francis has faced, also the sexual abuse crisis – he doesn’t shy away from that – but it’s really trying to tell you what to think about the Vatican but to show you what the Vatican is really like and allow viewers to make up their own mind.”

Mr Lamb has travelled with the Pope on several foreign trips and features in both episodes.

He added: “What this documentary shows is that there are people who are going…

How Does a Church Make the Poor Visible? This One Immortalized Them in a Fresco

How Does a Church Make the Poor Visible? This One Immortalized Them in a Fresco

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (RNS) — Poor people have often told pastor Brian Combs that the hardest thing about standing at highway intersections holding up a cardboard sign and begging for money is not watching the windows roll up or hearing the click of automatic doors locking.

It’s seeing people avert their eyes.

So when Combs, pastor of Asheville’s Haywood Street, and his friend artist Christopher Holt began talking about collaborating on a project, they envisioned a fresco on an entire wall of the sanctuary featuring images of the poor and downtrodden.

When completed later this month, the 27-foot-by-10-foot composition will illuminate in bright colors the faces and gestures of the people who visit Haywood Street Church’s principal ministry — The Welcome Table, a dining room with a reputation as one of the best places to eat in this mountain town known for its creative spirit.

To Combs and to the hundreds of poor who stop in for a meal each week, the fresco is intended to make the invisible visible.

“The primary intent of church, in my opinion, is to communicate something about sacred worth,” said Combs. “In God’s sight, you are anything but a throwaway. You’re priceless. You’re royalty. That’s one task of urban ministry we take seriously.”

The fresco’s composition is loosely based on the Beatitudes, the nine blessings recounted by…

Christian activists rejoice as Scotland drops controversial plan to have a state guardian for every child

The Scottish Parliament passed the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act on 19 February 2014.

It required state guardians, known as ‘named persons’, to record and share confidential information concerning the well being of children and their parents.

It was supposed to go into effect in August 2016, but The Christian Institute led a lengthy legal action against the introduction of the legislation, arguing that it breached human rights.

In July 2016, in the case of The Christian Institute and The Lord Advocate (Scotland), five UK Supreme Court judges unanimously struck down the central provisions of the scheme.

The Court stated that the data sharing provisions in the Act breached the right to a private and family life under article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

It also ruled that it had to be made clear that any advice offered by a named person is entirely optional.

CARE (Christian Action Research & Education), who was also part of the legal action has called the scheme “creepy”.

CARE for Scotland Director, Dr Stuart Weir said: “The writing’s been on the wall for the flawed Named Person scheme for some time and today’s decision did feel inevitable, although it has been long overdue.

“We wholeheartedly support measures to protect vulnerable young people, but from the start we have been concerned about the potential for the Named Person scheme to…

United Methodists Float Plans to Split Denomination after LGBTQ Vote

United Methodists Float Plans to Split Denomination after LGBTQ Vote

RNS) — The United Methodist Church’s deadline for petitions for its next global meeting passed Wednesday (Sept. 18), setting the terms for a final reckoning with LGBTQ issues that have divided the denomination for more than 40 years.

The UMC’s General Conference 2020, to be held in May in Minneapolis, will consider the structure of what church leaders hope can be an amicable, and orderly, breakup of a worldwide church that is the second-largest Protestant denomination in the United States. The various plans come in response to a vote earlier this year by the church’s decision-making body to strengthen language barring LGBTQ United Methodists from ordination and marriage.

That decision came in February at a special session of the General Conference that approved the conservative Traditional Plan, which centrists and progressives in the church have rejected and adamantly resisted. The resulting chaos has led some churches to withhold money from the denomination or to call for schism.

Bishops in areas that are growing within the denomination and widely seen as conservative, such as the Philippines and African countries, have urged unity in recent statements, even as moderates, most of whom are based in the United States, are optimistic about the prospect of formal separation.

“It’s not a divorce. It’s giving life to expressions of the church that are now…

Flooding in Texas Leaves at Least 2 Dead, Parts of Houston under Water

Flooding in Texas Leaves at Least 2 Dead, Parts of Houston under Water

Parts of Texas are underwater as Tropical Depression Imelda dropped more than 40 inches of rain in some counties around the Houston area.

The storm moved into the area on Tuesday with gusts of wind up to 50 mph.

On Thursday evening, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced on Twitter that he had declared a state of emergency in 13 counties so that counties could have access to state resources.

According to ABC News, at least two people have been killed as a result of the flooding. One man, 19-year-old Hunter Morrison, was “electrocuted and drowned” while trying to move his horse during a thunderstorm, the Jefferson County sheriff’s office reports.

Another man from Harris County reportedly died after he drove his van into floodwaters, and it became submerged.

The Huston Fire Department also responded to a building collapse. According to a statement on the HFD Twitter, “The flat roof of a post office facility mail distribution area collapsed. The building was occupied at the time, but everyone made it out.” Three people were…

Chicago Bans Wheaton College Students From Evangelizing in Park, Students Sue

Chicago Bans Wheaton College Students From Evangelizing in Park, Students Sue

Four Christian students from popular evangelical college Wheaton are suing the city of Chicago over rules which they say restrict their ability to share the gospel in public parks.

The students, who are part of a Chicago Evangelism Team, overseen by the Office of Christian Outreach at Wheaton College, claim they have been prevented from evangelizing by security personnel working at the downtown “Millennium Park.”

Frustrated by the fact that they are being constantly blocked from sharing the good news of Jesus, these courageous students are now fighting back with a lawsuit.

“We desire to exercise our constitutional right to free speech through sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” said student Matt Swart in a press release, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. “For the sake of every citizen who desires to make use of the rights our forefathers bled for, we pray that the City of Chicago amends their unconstitutional code.”

Religious freedom law firm Mauck & Baker, LLC, which is representing the students, has filed a motion in federal court requesting an injunction against the rules that restrict certain activities in Millennium Park.

“By its nature in history, public parks have always been completely open to speech activities,” associate attorney Sorin Leahu explained to the Christian Post.

One of the contested rules that city officials say…

New Bishop of Monmouth wants to boost Church population

The Venerable Cherry Vann got the necessary two-thirds majority from members of the Church in Wales Electoral College on Thursday.

Archbishop of Wales, Most Rev John Davies, said the bishop elect has a huge amount to contribute to the Church in Wales.

“One area I know is very close to her heart is the church’s ministry in post-industrial areas where community life, and church life in particular perhaps, has suffered enormously,” he said.

“The diocese, a little while ago, appointed a new archdeacon with responsibility for those areas, but having a bishop with great experience of them will be a huge morale boost for them.”

Archbishop of Wales, John Davies, with the Bishop Elect, Cherry Vann.

Originally from Leicestershire, Bishop Elect Vann has served as Archdeacon of Rochdale in the Diocese of Manchester for the past eleven years.

She said the challenges facing churches in south east Wales were the same as those in the north west of England.

“We’ve done some statistics and a very, very small percentage of the population are going to our churches,” she explained.

“This is something that we have been working hard to address in the Manchester area and I look forward to bringing some of the wisdom and knowledge I’ve gained from there to Newport and the Diocese of Monmouth.

“It struck me when I read the…

The Six Most Simple Adjustments to Become a Welcoming Church

Podcast Episode #573

iTunes • RSS • Stitcher • TuneIn Radio • Google Play • iHeart Radio • Spotify

Your church can become more welcoming regardless of how welcoming you may think it already is. Today we cover six simple adjustments that cost little to nothing that will have exponentially great results.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • Your church’s website is its front door to guests. The content and design need to be focused on them, not on the members.
  • A dirty or unkept children’s area will turn guests away from your church.
  • It doesn’t take a lot of work to train a welcome team. It just takes intentionality.
  • Door greeters are great, but having someone to greet those in the worship center may be more important.

The six adjustments we discuss are:

  1. Check the website.
  2. Do a facility audit.
  3. Train a welcome team.
  4. Keep greeters in worship center.
  5. Paint a room.
  6. Get some inexpensive signs.

Resources mentioned in today’s podcast:

Archbishop of Westminster welcomes new safeguarding report

Cardinal Nichols thanked the National Catholic Safeguarding Commission on Friday for giving “a clear picture of the work done in Safeguarding in the Catholic Church today”.

He said: “A glance at those reports tells a story of progress made, difficulties encountered, effort expended and challenges that lie ahead.”

While acknowledging the progress that has already been made, Cardinal Nichols stressed the importance of heeding the steps that the report has highlighted.

“At the same time the report is totally without any sense of complacency. The challenge of our response to the presence of sexual abuse within the Church continues to be urgent and of vital importance: heeding the voice and experience of survivors and responding to them; responding promptly to the surfacing of allegations; cooperating fully with public authorities; strengthening programmes of education and awareness raising.”

The president of the Bishops’ Conference of England & Wales also thanked all those involved in safe guarding provision across the Church saying: “The clarity and detail contained in the report is testimony to the hard work of many, many people, across our parishes and dioceses, mostly dedicated and trained volunteers.

“This is a story that needs to be heard.”
