Catholic Hospital Declines to Do Hysterectomy on Trans Man, Court Rules They May Have Violated the Law

A Catholic hospital may have violated state anti-discrimination law by refusing to perform a transgender individual’s surgery, even though the hospital referred the patient elsewhere, a court ruled Wednesday.

Mercy San Juan Medical Center is a not-for-profit Catholic hospital in the Sacramento, Calif., area. Evan Minton, who was born a female but now identifies as a man, was scheduled to have a hysterectomy at the hospital in 2016 when medical officials learned Minton is transgender. The surgery was part of Minton’s full sex-reassignment transition.

Because it is Catholic, Mercy San Juan only performs hysterectomies if the patient’s life or health is threatened. The hospital rescheduled the surgery at a non-Catholic hospital.

On Wednesday, the First District Court of Appeal in San Francisco reinstated Minton’s lawsuit, which had been tossed out by a lower court. The ACLU had sued on Minton’s behalf, claiming Mercy San Juan’s decision was “sex discrimination in violation of California’s Unruh Civil Rights Act,” according to KCRA-TV.

“The Unruh Act promises full and equal access to public accommodations, yet Dignity Health refuses to provide necessary care to transgender patients,” said Elizabeth Gill, an attorney with the ACLU of Northern California.

Mercy San Juan contacted Minton two days prior to the…

Christian charity urges the world not to forget Syria

The charity have released a new report highlighting the development work of Syrian civil society organisations and are calling for worldwide support and funding to be maintained.

The Syrian Civil War has seen the country’s people in conflict since March 2011. Hundreds of thousands have been killed and 630,000 people have fled the violence and remain displaced.

Syrian NGOs have been working to provide human rights, community development, and humanitarian aid across Syria over the past eight years, but are under increasing threat of being shut down by the government.

Christian Aid are calling for peace-makers and activists, who are committed to the rebuilding of their country, to be prioritised.

Máiréad Collins is Christian Aid’s Senior Advocacy Adviser for Syria, Iraq and Lebanon and the report’s author.

Speaking to Premier, she urged the international community “not to walk away” from the civil society movement that has developed in Syria and to “continue to fund them.”

She said: “In terms of the future of Syria, we really feel that the hope lies with Syrian Civil Society to ensure a sustained peace and a democratic future.”

“In order to fight to have a free and open civil society” she said, “is not something that can be done in one year or two years, it’s a long term goal and a long term struggle.”

She went on to say that a crisis can unfortunately become…

Pastor was Jailed, Tortured, Forced to Do Hard Labor in Eritrea

Pastor was Jailed, Tortured, Forced to Do Hard Labor in Eritrea

A pastor who ministered in Eritrea said in an interview that he was tortured, starved and forced to do hard labor while he was imprisoned in the country.

The pastor, who is called “Gabriel,” told the Barnabas Fund that he was jailed several times while working in Eritrea, the Christian Post reports. The country is ranked as the seventh most hostile country in the world for Christians, according to Open Doors USA.

Gabriel was first jailed in 1998 for about a month along with other church members. His second time, he was imprisoned for three years even though his sentencing was only for six months. He says he was kept longer because he is a Christian pastor. He fled the country after his release.

“Sometimes you dispute with God, why you let me go through this hardship?” Gabriel was quoted as saying. “But when you start reading the Bible, when you pray devotion daily, automatically your mind clicks, you are in the main way – the way you are supposed to go.”

He said once he was tied up and hit in the head with a stick for about an hour. Another time he was locked inside a metal shipping container for two weeks in solitary confinement.

He said prisoners were only given a small amount of food every 18 hours and they were forced to collect and to carry stones that would be used in construction work.

“Sometimes you break the stones with a heavy hammer. You…

Christian couple threatened in India after distributing tracts

According to Christian anti-persecution charity CSW, as Leo Johnson and his wife Jenifa were making their way back home in the residential area of Bombay Castle, Nilgiris, they were stopped and questioned by a man believed to be affiliated with the far-right Hindu nationalist group, Hindu Munani.

The man allegedly called two other friends and they started harassing the couple, accusing them of forcing people in the neighbourhood to convert.

Johnson told CSW: “We did not speak to people about Jesus. All my wife and I did was to distribute the tracts to homes. No one was forced to take the literature.”

Johnson said that despite explaining what they were doing, the three men threatened him and his wife by raising their fists and using abusive language. They warned the couple never to share tracts in the area, and that if they were seen again they would be attacked violently.

The men then demanded the couple apply holy ash on their foreheads, which they collected from a local Hindu temple.

Mr Johnson was forced to put some on his wife’s forehead.

He said: “Jenifa was terrified by the incident and started crying. I did not know what to do and to avert further harassment, I submitted to their demands. This should not have happened to us as India is supposed to be a free country where we can practice our faith. Even though it was a humiliating moment for us as it all…

Bible second most likely book to be re-read on holiday

The Harry Potter series came top, with 50 Shades of Grey third on the list.

The survey of 1000 people, by Stena Line, asked people what their favourite book to read on holiday was.

The Bible was top of the list among men and remained second among women.

The Top 10 were:

1. The Harry Potter series

2. The Bible

3. 50 Shades of Grey

4. The Lord of the Rings

5. Stephen King’s It

6. Catch 22

7. The Hobbit

8. A Song of Ice and Fire series

9. The Godfather

10. War and Peace.

Olivia Warburton, the head of content creation from the Bible Reading Fellowship told Premier: “They’re all pretty substantial…people are clearly up for serious holiday reading rather than your light holiday read, which might be what you’d assume.

“I suppose that’s sort of suggesting that people are really up for some serious time on holiday, when they have that time, to really engage with something that they think is important. So, from that point of view, it’s not surprising that the Bible’s in there.”

She said the distance from home might also amke people feel more comfortable around a big book, saying: “People have space – physical space, mental space, break from the routine and more attention to spare and holidays are a time when change can happen, new things can happen, maybe new starts when you when you get back home.”

Olivia suggested taking a Bible on a kindle on holiday and starting in one of the…

Merriam-Webster Redefines ‘They’ to Include a Non-Binary Person

Merriam-Webster Redefines ‘They’ to Include a Non-Binary Person

The dictionary that traces its roots to 19th-century author and lexicographer Noah Webster now says “they” can refer to one person – instead of only multiple people, as previously defined.

Merriam-Webster said this week an additional definition had been added to the word “they” in reference to non-binary persons.

The additional definition reads: “Used to refer to a single person whose gender identity is nonbinary.”

It is accompanied by a sample sentence: “I knew certain things about … the person I was interviewing. … They had adopted their gender-neutral name a few years ago, when they began to consciously identify as nonbinary – that is, neither male nor female. They were in their late 20s, working as an event planner, applying to graduate school.”

The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBT group, celebrated the news.

“Visibility matters. Pronouns matter,” HRC said in a tweet.

Others, though, didn’t welcome the change.

National Review called it “non-binary nonsense.”

Author Make Pantano also criticized the change.

“Leftists destroy everything, even language,” he wrote on his blog, “In fact, leftists must destroy language and redefine words in order to make the things they believe sound less crazy than they are. This tactic has been extraordinarily effective in shaping our politics….

Food bank demand increases by 48% after 2 years of universal credit, says Trussell Trust

The Trussell Trust is urging the government to end the five week wait for Universal Credit and says the longer the new benefits system has been rolled out in an area, the more people are plunged into poverty.

The charity highlights that while the Department for Work and Pensions has attempted to find solutions to issues with Universal Credit, the wait for a first benefit payment, which is often longer than five weeks, is continuing to cause unnecessary hardship.

Gary Lemon, Director of policy, external affairs and research for the Trussel Trust, told Premier: “We found some really clear correlations between increased demand and when universal credit actually hits the area which the food banks are in.

“We found that on average, the year after food banks have been rolled out, they see a 30% increase in demand and after 18 months that jumps up to 40% and just keeps on going up and up. So, two years after Universal Credit is rolled out, the average increases 48%.”

He explained what Christians can do: “The church has got an important role, lots of people across the UK listen when people from within the church speak, I think it’s important that people are aware of the issues that are going on and understand that these are systemic things that are really important.

“The first step is for all of these groups of people within the church to say ‘this isn’t right, this…

Christian college slammed as students encouraged to confess sins to plants

On Tuesday a display of plants were set up in the seminary’s chapel and students in the “Extractivism: A Ritual/Liturgical Response” class said sorry to them.

The ceremony has prompted some criticism and mocking on social media, with some calling it nonsense or crazy.

The New York school has defended itself saying it was a “beautiful ritual” for students to confess the harm we’ve done to plants.

It added that the world is in a climate emergency caused by our disregard for creation and part of addressing the issue should be building new bridges to the natural world spiritually.

“Far too often, we see the natural world only as resources to be extracted for our use, not divinely created in their own right-worthy of honour, thanks and care,” the statement read.

“We need to unlearn habits of sin and death. And part of that work must be building new bridges to the natural world.”

Coach turns down ‘significant’ raise: The ‘Five Pillars’ of true prosperity

Coach Tony Bennett and the Virginia Cavaliers celebrate winning the 2019 NCAA Men’s National Basketball Tournament.

Ask the average American to identify “Tony Bennett” and they’ll point you to the big band singer. They might even have “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” playing in their mind as they do so.

Today, however, the “other” Tony Bennett is making headlines.

The one who just declined what his employer called a “substantial” raise so others could make more money. The one who, after his Virginia Cavaliers won this year’s NCAA national basketball championship, told his players: “Promise me you will remain humble and thankful for this. Don’t let this change you. It doesn’t have to.”

That Tony Bennett is making news not just for what he does, but for who he is.

The “Five Pillars” of life

When his team won the national title last April, Bennett told a post-game interviewer, “I do want to thank the Lord and my Savior.” He regularly prays for his players in the hope that “they’ll be able to find the truth in their lives that has really transformed my life.”

He has built his basketball program around the biblical principles of humility, passion, unity, servanthood, and thankfulness. He calls them the “Five Pillars.” He posted them in Virginia’s locker room and emphasizes them in everything the team does.

It’s therefore not surprising that when the University of Virginia offered Bennett a large raise as a reward for winning the national title, the coach turned it down. “I have more than I need,” he said. “I’m blessed beyond what I deserve.”

He credits his wife, Laurel, with the decision to redirect the money into additional compensation for his staff and improvements for their program. He and Laurel have also pledged $500,000 toward a career-development program for current and former Virginia basketball players.

Coach Bennett has life figured out:
