MP added to SNP’s approved list despite ‘very toxic atmosphere for Christians in politics’

Dr Lisa Cameron, the Scottish National Party member of parliament for East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow, voted against changing the Northern Ireland abortion law earlier this year because of her Christian faith and her own experience of having two late-term miscarriages.

Although the vote was not whipped, meaning MPs could vote with their conscience, afterwards she received abuse from members of her own party and on social media, many which she said reminded her of her own miscarriages and one which said they would come to ‘abort her’.

At the time of that vote, there was talk among her local party to not select her for the Scottish seat at the next election. So, when she did not appear immediately on the list of approved candidates for a potential snap election this week, Dr Cameron felt the party was trying to send her a message about what views she could and could not have.

Dr Cameron told Premier: “The process seemed to be delayed for some unexplained reason, in that I couldn’t find out what further information they needed from me in order to progress it. Following the vote on the abortion issue, local officials from my local branches, including conveners and those who are on the vetting panel had said that my vote meant basically that I breached party policy, or that I should be deselected, or that I wasn’t then fit to pass vetting and be a candidate…

Harvest Pastor Greg Laurie Urges Compassion after Jarrid Wilson’s Suicide

Harvest Pastor Greg Laurie Urges Compassion after Jarrid Wilson’s Suicide

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (RNS) — Pastor Greg Laurie urged his grieving congregants at Harvest Christian Fellowship on Wednesday (Sept. 11) to have compassion for people dealing with mental health issues as the church copes with the news that one of its pastors died by suicide.

“Sometimes we want to just say, ‘They’re just not spiritual or they don’t love the Lord,’ and that’s just a ridiculous thing to say because they may have a struggle you know nothing about,” Laurie said.

Hundreds filled the pews at the church’s midweek service, two days after the death of preacher and mental health activist Jarrid Wilson.

Wilson, co-founder of the mental health nonprofit Anthem of Hope, was open about his own depression. He often posted on social media about his battles with mental illness.

Just hours before his passing, Wilson had posted a series of tweets that dealt with suicide, including one encouraging followers to remember that loving Jesus doesn’t always cure illnesses such as depression, PTSD or anxiety.

“But that doesn’t mean Jesus doesn’t offer us companionship and comfort,” he wrote.

Citing Scripture, Laurie preached about the tendency to hold certain people to elevated standards, “expecting them to be everything for us.” He advised to instead “look to Jesus Christ. … He’s the only one who will sustain you.”

Laurie…

Leading US biologist admits, God is a ‘hack’ we need even if he doesn’t exist

The debate, released on Friday 13 Sep, features Weinstein in conversation with Professor Alister McGrath and explores the question “Religion: Useful Fiction or Ultimate Truth?” and was filmed in front of a live audience at The Institute of Mechanical Engineers in Westminster, London. It is the first episode to be released in the second season of The Big Conversation from Premier Christian Radio’s faith debate show Unbelievable?. The first season had over 5 million engagements across video, podcast, broadcast and print.

Weinstein, who describes himself as a ‘Professor in Exile’ after he was forced to stand down from his position at Evergeen State University in 2017 after confrontations with student protestors over ‘political correctness’ on campus says that belief in God has been an important evolutionary development to make sure people behave well. “The deity is a hack, right? It hacks a structure in a way that functions… How do we learn what it is wrong? These things are induced in us through a mechanism. In Catholicism, the fact that you do wrong and that wrong counts against you in a way that you can relieve yourself of the debt but you have to confess it to somebody who is then in a position to give guidance to you. Again, it’s a hack. It correctly teaches you that this is wrong through some mechanism that has to be instantiated in the real world and it…

Birmingham Church, 56 Years Later, to Recall Bombing with Messages of Love, Action

Birmingham Church, 56 Years Later, to Recall Bombing with Messages of Love, Action

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (RNS) — Months before the annual observance of the bombing that rocked a congregation, a community and the nation, Sixteenth Street Baptist Church has been getting ready.

Renovations were taking place in June: fresh paint and new technology for the classroom spaces in the basement. Just as at worship services, Sunday school attendance ebbs and flows each week, depending on the number of longtime members and curious tourists. This Sunday (Sept. 15), which marks the 56th anniversary of the attack that killed four young girls, the church hopes to unveil the refurbished space where visitors can watch videos about kindness, caring for all humans no matter their race, and the civil rights history of the church and its community.

“After you leave this place, we don’t just want you to experience history,” the Rev. Arthur Price Jr. said in a June interview at his church. “We call the four girls ‘angels of change’ and our hope is that people will leave inspired, become agents of change as a result of what happened here.”

“We’re adding more content about not just what happened in 1963 but how the church was organized and the tension that was going on in the city during that time,” Price said in a subsequent interview about the church that was at the forefront of the civil rights movement before and after the bombing.

The pastor…

Students at Christian university plan protest after shocking allegations against its president

The scheduled protest at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia comes days after an article by Politico Magazine featured several current and former top staff at the school anonymously detailing unethical behaviours from Jerry Falwell Jr.

Falwell, who’s one of Donald Trump’s advisors, has denied any wrong doing and called for the FBI to investigate a “criminal conspiracy” against him.

The article used screenshots of emails for evidence, which Falwell has spoken out against.

“The emails are stolen property,” Falwell told CNN on Tuesday.

“And the fact that all these people in different states are joining together and sharing stolen emails with the press makes it a criminal conspiracy.”

Falwell was accused of using real estate transactions that would benefit his family or his close friends and having the university give business loans to his friends.

“There is no self-dealing at Liberty University,” Falwell told CNN. “I have never written a single check, have not gotten a single penny from any Liberty transaction except for my salary, which is approved by the board every year.”

One example of the “self-dealing” outlined in the…

Is the church nearly dead? Dr. Denison reviews ‘The Myth of the Dying Church’

Every day brings more evidence that the church in America and the Western world is on a path to imminent demise:

  • Millennials are leaving by the droves.
  • The number of Americans with no religious commitment is skyrocketing.
  • Churches are dying all around us.
  • The future of America looks far more secular than spiritual.

Every statement I just made is false.

Glenn Stanton is director of Global Family Formation Studies at Focus on the Family. He served the George W. Bush administration for many years as a consultant on increasing fatherhood involvement. He is the author of nine books and one of the most insightful commentators on American culture today.

In his new book, The Myth of the Dying Church: How Christianity Is Actually Thriving in America and the World, Stanton explores the best sociological research available today on the subject of religious commitment in America and beyond. What he discovers runs directly counter to the cultural narrative that insists that Christianity is in steep decline.

To the contrary, he finds remarkable good news for the gospel in our day. And he offers very practical advice for parents who want to help the next generation stay faithful to Christ.

Here are Stanton’s conclusions:

  • Church attendance is at an all-time high, both in raw numbers and as a percentage of the population.
  • “The percentage of young adults regularly attending evangelical and nondenominational churches has roughly doubled between 1972 and today.”
  • The “Nones” (those who say they have no religious affiliation) are not new unbelievers but people who were never committed to the faith and now feel free to tell pollsters so.
  • “The number of Christians in the world today is larger than it has ever been in the history of the world.”

Why religion matters

In the foreword, Baylor scholar Byron Johnson states: “There is indeed a dramatic decline among some American churches, but this severe decline can be found in a distinct…

‘The man who shot me saved my life’: Making this unusual day our best day

Image: Wesley Hamilton at iamwesleyhamilton.com

We are in the midst of Palindrome Week. A palindrome is “a word, phrase, or sequence that reads the same backward as forward.” Examples include “Mom,” “Dad,” and “Tell a ballet.”

Today is 9/13/19. Read backward, it’s still 9/13/19. The same was true Tuesday (9/10/19), Wednesday (9/11/19), and Thursday (9/12/19). The trend will continue until next Thursday (9/19/19).

Another ten-day palindrome week begins on 1/20/21. We’ll have more ten-day series in 2023, 2024, 2025, and so on through 2029. Not to mention thirty-eight “full palindrome days” scattered throughout the twenty-first century (9/10/2019 and 1/20/2021, for example).

Why is today so spooky?

Today is unusual for another reason as well: we will see a “harvest micromoon” tonight. It is a “harvest moon” because, as the Farmer’s Almanac explains, such a full moon allows farmers to “work late into the night by this Moon’s light.”

It is also a “micromoon” because the moon is at its furthest distance from Earth. It will appear 14 percent smaller to us than when it’s at its closest (a “supermoon” such as we had last year).

And, of course, it’s a full moon on Friday the 13th. This last happened nationwide in 2000 and won’t happen again for the entire country until 2049.

Superstition regarding the number thirteen may have arisen in the Middle Ages, based on the fact that there were thirteen people present at Jesus’ Last Supper, which was held on the thirteenth day of Nisan on the Jewish calendar. Friday is associated with Jesus’ death, of course, but early tradition also identified it as the day Eve gave Adam the forbidden fruit and the day Cain killed his brother, Abel.

And so, a full moon (even if it’s a bit smaller than usual) on Friday the 13th is drawing considerable attention today.

Why do we name planets?

Why do we assign numbers to days (and…

Salvation Army’s Strawberry Field’s gates open to the public

From Saturday, visitors will have the chance to walk through the gardens of the Strawberry Field home in Woolton, Liverpool, where Lennon would play as a boy.

The musician used to climb over the wall to gain entry to the Beaconsfield Road home, which he later immortalised in song, but the Salvation Army is now opening the site’s famous red gates to the public as a tourist attraction and youth training centre.

Lennon’s sister, Julia Baird, 72, who is also honorary president of the Strawberry Field project, told the PA news agency that the grounds of the home had been a “sanctuary” for the musician as a youngster.

She said: “I suppose as children we all have somewhere that’s a bit ours, a bit special.

“It might be a little hidey-hole under the stairs or it might be up an oak tree but it’s somewhere we take ourselves off and that’s a special place.

“It seems from the song that this was John’s special place.”

The home was made famous by The Beatles song in 1967 and around 60,000 tourists pose for photos outside its distinctive gates every year.

Peter Byrne/PA Wire

Replica gates are now in place but the original structures will be on display for visitors in the grounds.

The newly-built centre will include a cafe and exhibition on Lennon’s early life, but will also provide training for 18 to 25-year-olds with mild to moderate learning…
