The Pastor as Evangelist — Glen Higgins

In Paul’s legendary charge outlining the work of the pastor is this admonition: “Do the work of an evangelist.” Pastor, gospel sharing, good news heralding, and evangelizing is part of what it means to “pastor.” Paul goes so far as to say this is part of what it means to “fulfill your ministry”. Read inversely, for the pastor to ignore evangelism is to have an unfulfilled incomplete ministry. If this is true, how should this shape the pastor?

The 20 Most Bizarre—and Hilarious—Things to Happen During a Sermon — Facts & Trends

In a preaching or teaching ministry, it’s inevitable you’ll have some bizarre things happen. I wanted to hear stories from others in the pulpit. So I asked for feedback:

8 Reasons Young Staff Members Stay at the Same Church — Chuck Lawless

Many young church staff members I know are continually looking for their next place of service. Sometimes that’s because their calling has changed. In more cases, though, it’s because they’re struggling with the church or its leadership. On the other hand, I’ve also been with young staff members who love their church and prayerfully want to remain there as long as they can. Here are some of the motivating factors that make them want to stay:

3 Reasons Drifting From the Faith Starts With Drifting From the Church — Michael Kelley

We’ve all got competing priorities. We have travel sports, dance recitals, lake trips, and all the rest. Surely it…

UK Churches and charities to receive grants of £250,000

Christian charity Allchurches Trust have launched a new £1million grant programme, to help churches in England and Wales invest in the next generation after research revealed 96 per cent wanted to provide better youth-based activities and support.

A poll of 800 churches, conducted by the trust, showed 82 per cent ran activities for children aged 0 to 10, but only 58 per cent offered provision for teenagers.

The Growing Lives initiative has already awarded £276,487 in funding to transform spaces, and provide resources, training and care to 21 different projects.

Hemsworth Methodist Church in West Yorkshire will use its grant to convert the nave of the chapel into a soft play area and café for children and young families as a social enterprise.

Another organisation to benefit is the Transform North West Network, to create ‘Amazing Space’ – providing employment training and mental health support to disadvantaged teenagers across Merseyside.

Sir Philip Mawer, chairman of Allchurches Trust, said: “We are delighted with the response to Growing Lives so far, with applications from churches and charities representing many denominations continuing to flow in.
“It is clear the new programme is fulfilling a very real need in enabling churches to enhance their work with families and we’re delighted to be funding a wide range of projects that will change lives and…

Priest receives lifetime ban from ministry for affair with married parishioner

Revd Simon Sayers, 55, began the secret relationship with the woman nine years ago, after she approached him for pastoral support.

Mr Sayers, formerly of the Warblington with Emsworth parish in Hampshire, sent her “many sexually explicit texts,” a Church of England tribunal heard.

“You too are the most passionate, sexy, skilled and sensuous lover and my body is yours, my heart and soul are yours forever,” the priest wrote in one message.

Mr Sayers admitted to the affair in a letter to the panel hearing, which he did not attend.

The Church of England found him guilty of “conduct unbecoming or inappropriate to the office and work of a clergy person in that he had an intimate sexual relationship with a married woman to whom he was giving pastoral support and failed to observe and maintain appropriate pastoral boundaries”.

Mr Sayers expressed his regret at “betraying his calling” and apologised to his wife for breaking her trust for a second time: “I can offer no excuse, only my profound sorrow for betraying my wife and my calling once more after that terrible incident in 1995,” he said.

In 2016, the Church of England suspended Mr Sayers from ministry for five years, following an investigation into inappropriate behaviour with a 16-year-old girl while serving as a vicar in Islington, north London in 1995.

The Metropolitan Police also investigated the allegations, but no…

Tennagers gild historic church gates in Camden

The youngsters have gilded ornamental features on gates at St Pancras Old Church in Camden Town.

They were taught the art of gilding, applying a thin coat of gold to a solid surface, at a workshop run by the Creative Dimension Trust.

Charity founder Penny Bendall said the teenagers were from London schools and had been taught by an expert gilder.

The trust offers youngsters with artistic skills the chance to learn traditional crafts.

Last year, teenagers who took part in a stone-carving workshop created a tryptic in tribute to soldiers who fell in the First World War.

Georgia’s Abortion Rate Has Declined More than 18 Percent over the Last 23 Years

Georgia’s Abortion Rate Has Declined More than 18 Percent over the Last 23 Years

Georgia’s abortion rate has declined more than 18 percent over the last 23 years, even as the state’s population has increased, according to state public health statistics reviewed by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The 2017 rate—determined by the number of abortions per 1,000 females between the age of 10 and 55—was 8.3, reflecting 27,453 abortions. That is significantly lower than the 33,516 reported abortions in 1994—a rate of 13.7. During the same time frame, George’s population increased from 7 million people to about 10.4 million, according to reporter Maya T. Prabhu.

The article cited numerous possibilities for the decline, including improved access to birth control, the legalization of over-the-counter sale of emergency contraceptives and a 2015 law banning abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Cole Muzio, the executive director of the Family Policy Alliance of Georgia, told AJC that he believes the lower numbers reflect a shift away from a pro-abortion mindset.

“We are in an increasingly pro-life generation and pro-life culture,” he said.

Muzio’s group was part of a successful push earlier this year to pass House Bill 481, a new law that bans abortion as soon as a heartbeat is detected, typically at 6 weeks gestation. The Living Infants Fairness and Equality (LIFE) Act is scheduled to go into effect in January but is being…

Kenyan Muslims Risk Their Lives to Save 20 Christians from al-Shabaab Attack

Kenyan Muslims Risk Their Lives to Save 20 Christians from al-Shabaab Attack

In a show of solidarity, a group of Muslims warned a group of 20 construction workers – mostly Christians – about an impending attack by a jihadist fundamentalist group in Kutulo, Kenya.

According to Premier UK, a group of local Muslims were informed that a jihadist terror group – al-Shabaab – was planning an attack on “non-local Christian workers” building a government hospital in Kutulo. The attack was scheduled for July 21, and when the locals were made aware of the possible assault, they quickly informed the workers to leave the building site.

The Muslim locals helped the Christian workers evacuate the area before confronting the gunmen when they arrived.

“They confronted the gunmen who proceeded to the site and failed to get what they wanted. [The attackers] opened fire but no one was injured before they escaped,” north-eastern regional commissioner Mohamed Birik told media, according to Premier UK.

According to persecution watchdog Open Doors, the failed attack took place in Mandera County which is near the Kenya-Somalia border. Reportedly, in Somalia, most Christians conceal their faith out of fear of persecution.

Open Doors is calling the act of heroism by the Muslim locals a “show of solidarity.”

The watchdog reports, “The area feels more like Somalia than Kenya and usually is a very hostile place for Christians. Most of…

He Was a Drag Queen for 20 Years, Then He Found Jesus: ‘I Was Set Free’

He Was a Drag Queen for 20 Years, Then He Found Jesus: ‘I Was Set Free’

A former drag queen who became a Christian is leading the opposition to library-sponsored drag queen story hours and testifying to the life-changing power of his new faith.

Kevin Whitt organized a July protest outside the Grauwyler Park Branch Library in Dallas as it hosted a story hour by two drag queens. Whitt is the director of the Dallas chapter of MassResistance, a socially conservative activist organization.

“I was a transsexual prostitute and drag queen for 20 years,” Whitt said outside the protest. MassResistance posted a video of his testimony. “… I used to perform in every drag venue in Dallas. I used to host my own drag shows for over 20 years. And then … five and a half years ago, I found Jesus and I got set free.”

Whitt’s testimony is detailed in a forthcoming book, God Saved the Queen: A Drag Queen’s Journey from the Stage to the Pulpit.

Whitt said he “was not looking for God.” But God got his attention through “a series of circumstances.”

“I was not looking for a change,” he said. “…I thought I loved being in that lifestyle. But God just captured my heart and I just surrendered my life to God. And I was set free and I came to Jesus. And ever since then, my life has been so much better than it ever was. I’m so much happier than I ever was.

“Whenever I was in the lifestyle, I was very depressed… I had…
