Violence towards Christians increasing in Sahel belt

The area is the fault line between Islamic Africa to the north and predominantly Christian Africa to the south.

Open Doors, the Christian freedom charity say general violence has increased because of a mix of poverty, unemployment, corruption and lack of governance.

However, for Christians, they have seen increasing Islamic extremism in the area as it becomes a hotspot for Islamic militant groups, some being home-grown and others being part of international terror organisations like IS and Al-Qaeda, as members often settle in states along the Sahel when they are driven out of the Middle East.

Open Doors say these ideologies are gaining popularity because they come with the provision of goods and services which the state has failed to provide and they are promising a new political order free from corruption.

Almost 30 violent Islamist groups are known to be active in the region with most committing attacks in more than one country. For example, Boko Haram has spread out from north Nigeria, across Lake Chad and into other countries.

Their ideology has infiltrated numerous splinter groups such as Islamic State West Africa Province, a group which broke away from Nigeria’s Boko Haram and targets and enslaves Christian women and girls.

At least six churches in the DRC have been burned down and two church-run clinics and health centres have been destroyed. In Mali,…

Seven Reasons Why We Need to Move Beyond the Church Size Debate

It is predictable.

Any time I write about anything dealing with church sizes, some of the discussion degenerates into a debate about the best size church. It happened last week when I wrote some positive words about smaller churches. It has happened in the past when I wrote some positive words about megachurches.

We need all churches. All sizes of churches. We need more churches. It’s not either/or. It’s both/and. Allow me to point out seven reasons why a debate on church size bears no good fruit.

  1. Church health and church size are not synonymous. There are many healthy small churches. There are many healthy large and megachurches. And there are plenty of unhealthy churches of all sizes.
  2. Conflict is not unique to a particular church size. Indeed some level of conflict is in every church. There are times where conflict is more visible in the smaller church because everyone knows everyone. But that does not mean conflict is not present, and sometimes intense, in larger churches.
  3. Categorical statements are harmful to the body of Christ. “All pastors of large churches care about are the numbers.” “If a small church was doing was it was supposed to do, it wouldn’t be a small church.” Such categorical statements do no good. Indeed, they do harm. Why should we even participate in such conversations?
  4. The body of Christ is diverse; that is good. In 1 Corinthians 12, the Apostle Paul lauds the diversity of the individual members of the body of Christ. Similarly, there is diversity in the…

‘Let’s Be the Louder Voice’: GiveSendGo’s Pro-Life Campaign Counters GoFundMe’s Pro-Abortion Fundraiser

‘Let’s Be the Louder Voice’: GiveSendGo’s Pro-Life Campaign Counters GoFundMe’s Pro-Abortion Fundraiser

The crowdfunding website GoFundMe stirred controversy last month when it launched its own campaign to fund abortion rights organizations. Now, a Christian crowdfunding website – GiveSendGo.com – is countering that message with its own fundraiser, but for pro-life causes.

The “Life Back” campaign at GiveSendGo.com seeks to raise at least $10,000 for National Right to Life and crisis pregnancy centers, although its founders hope the campaign soars far beyond that target.

“We cannot let GoFundMe be the louder voice. We cannot let GoFundMe make the biggest wave,” Heather Wilson, Chief Marketing Officer for GiveSendGo, told Christian Headlines. “… Let’s be the louder voice in this.”

Launched in 2015, GiveSendGo calls itself the No. 1 free Christian crowdfunding site. It stays afloat off donations.

GoFundMe launched its “Fight Back” abortion rights campaign last month with a target of $500,000, although it stood at only $42,000 on Thursday.

The GoFundMe campaign’s webpage says, “access to abortion is under attack” and donations will be given to the National Network of Abortion Funds, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, American Civil Liberties Union, and the ACLU Foundation. The webpage references new abortion restrictions in Missouri, Georgia and…

London church to invest £100,000 in youth start-ups

Salvation Proclaimers Anointed Church (SPAC) Nation will giving away up to £100,000 to young entrepreneurs looking to start a business, to encourage more commerce to poor areas and invest in future generations.

SPAC Nation will hold its second entrepreneurs service this Sunday, building on its success from last year which saw £30,000 invested into the projects of young entrepreneurs.

This year, the initiative, which is funded by church donors, will be offering over triple the amount in investment funds.

SPAC service organiser, Pastor Henry, told Premier the project is a great way to serve their local community: “Areas which are the most economically deprived have greater crime rates and so this cash injection into businesses creates more jobs, creates opportunities, helps current businesses thrive and grow and then this eradicates poverty.

“It’s our way of contributing back to society and our local communities.” He added.

Speaking about the upcoming event, SPAC Nation Senior, Pastor Tobi Adegboyega said: “This Sunday, many young people’s lives are going to change forever for the better.”

He added: “Very generous church members have pulled together from their own pockets. At SPAC Nation we’re big fans of enterprise and we know how it can change the lives of young people. That’s why we believe in helping their entrepreneurial dreams come true.”

Pastor Henry is…

University of Chicago Ph.D. Student Surveys Thousands of Biologists and Most Agree that Life Begins at Conception

University of Chicago Ph.D. Student Surveys Thousands of Biologists and Most Agree that Life Begins at Conception

A University of Chicago Ph.D. student recently defended a dissertation in which he asked thousands of biologists when life begins. A large majority of the biologists he surveyed, even those who are committed to the pro-choice position, said human life begins at conception.

Steven Jacobs undertook his research for his dissertation in the Department of Comparative Human Development. The research took him five grueling years and roused the ire of many academics, who, according to the college fix, accused him of academic dishonesty, claimed he politicized science, and compared him to the Ku Klux Klan.

Jacobs wanted to bring fact-based research into the debate over abortion in an effort to move the debate past the question of when life begins and into other questions by showing that there is already a scholarly consensus on when life begins. He told the Daily Wire that he wanted to “produce research that can become a contribution to a contentious debate that is harming our body politic” and to “help people become informed so that the competition of ideas can take place on a level playing field.”

Jacobs began his work by asking 2,899 American adults which group who be “most qualified to answer the question of when a human’s life begins.” 81% of those he surveyed said biologists would be most qualified to answer the…

Hearings against officers over death of church caretaker dismissed

Thomas Orchard, 32, died in hospital seven days after being arrested and taken to Heavitree Road police station in Exeter, Devon, in October 2012.

During his detention, the man who had mental health issues was restrained and an emergency response belt (ERB) was placed across his face for five minutes and two seconds to prevent spitting or biting.

Devon and Cornwall Police held misconduct proceedings against Sergeant Jan Kingshott, who was the custody sergeant when Mr Orchard was taken to Heavitree Road police station; and Sergeant Alexander Kennedy, Pc Rob Dodd, and Pc Mark Nagle who were involved in his detention and restraint.

The panel, which was chaired by Assistant Chief Constable Ben Snuggs, of Hampshire Police, concluded the four officers could not have a fair hearing because the panel had “no confidence” in the disclosure process; the delay had caused “irredeemable prejudice”; and in respect of three of the officers, there had been a departure from the regulatory framework such that the officers could not have a fair hearing.

In a landmark conviction in 2018, the office of the chief constable of Devon and Cornwall Police pleaded guilty to breaches under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

A judge at Bristol Crown Court ruled he could not be sure that the ERB, a tough webbing belt designed to restrain limbs, was a contributory factor in Mr Orchard’s death.

He fined the force £234,500 and ordered it to pay £20,515 in prosecution costs.

At that time,…
