A series of proposals put forward by the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) to curb the impact of throwaway fashion have been dismissed by the Government.

The report, which highlighted the social and environmental implications of the clothing industry, found that the UK sends 300,000 tonnes of textile waste to landfill or incinerators every year, while less than one per cent of material is recycled into new clothing.

Christina Dean, founder of environmental charity Redress and sustainable clothing label BYT told Premier: “Previously, I was so excited about the report and the environmental audit committee’s recommendations, I’m always so proud of the government and the kind of leadership that we have here.

“So it was a bit of a shock, I definitely wasn’t expecting that.”

The EAC study shows that Britain buys more clothes per person than any other European country. Its recommendations to tackle the problem included a ban on burning unsold stock and the introduction of a one pence charge per garment on producers for better recycling of clothes.

Ms Dean thinks consumers have an equal responsibility to reduce clothing waste, she said: “We’ve got an ethical blind spot in how we buy clothes. The problem is that fashion is so powerful that people don’t go out to rationally buy clothes, they go out and they buy clothes because they think it’s going to change how they…

Eritrean government officials asked health centre administrators to sign a document approving the handover.

However, most of the administrators refused to sign and told the officials to talk to the church leaders.

Security officers then removed the staff from the health centres and closed them down. It is not yet known why the Eritrean government took this action.

It’s part of a wider disagreement between Christians and the Eritrean government.

In April, Eritrean Catholic bishops called for a national reconciliation process that ensures justice for everyone. In the wake of the peace deal signed with Ethiopia, Eritrean bishops wrote a 30 page letter saying that the nation should come together and heal.

They called on the government to make reforms that would stop people wanting to leave the country.

The closure of the health centres also follows the arrest of 30 underground Christians in Eritrea at the beginning of June who were members of a Pentecostal church, an unregistered and therefore illegal denomination.

According to reports, police arrested the Christians while they were gathered at three different places in the capital Asmara.

The Oregon Court of Appeals said Aaron and Melissa Klein had violated Oregon law by not baking the cake in 2012 for Rachel and Laurel Bowman-Cryer and upheld the couple’s previous $135,000 fine.

However, the couple took the case to the highest court and justices dismissed the state court ruling against the owners of Sweet Cakes.

State judges have now been told to look at the case again in light of last year’s Supreme Court ruling in favour of Christian Colorado baker Jack Phillips who also refused to make a cake for a same-sex wedding.

The court ruled that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission showed anti-religious bias against Phillips.

Kelley Shackelford, president, CEO, and chief counsel of First Liberty Institute – the law group which represented the Kleins – called Monday’s Supreme Court decision “a victory for the religious liberty of all Americans.”

Shackelford said: “This is a victory for Aaron and Melissa Klein and for religious liberty for all Americans.

“The Constitution protects speech, popular or not, from condemnation by the government. The message from the Court is clear – government hostility toward religious Americans will not be tolerated.”

Other Christian MPs have also pledged their allegiance, with Andrea Leadsom now backing Boris Johnson and Stephen Crabb supporting Sajid Javid.

The Christian Conservative MP for Meriden, Caroline Spelman, who is also the Second Church Estates Commissioner (the MP who liases between the Church and parliament) has told Premier who she is now backing after the Health Secretary Matt Hancock – who she was supporting – pulled out of the race.

Spelman told Premier: “I waited for the TV debate and I have decided after that, and listening to the hustings that I’ve been to, that I will lend my support to Rory Stewart because I think Rory, like Matt, takes a strong position on the question of whether or not we should actually leave the European Union without a deal and that’s very important to me. Having large numbers of people employed in the car industry, we really can’t afford to leave without a deal.”

Spelman spoke recently about the impact of the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) plant in Solihull moving the production of their Discovery car to Slovakia, and said she was talking to JLR bosses to limit the risk to local jobs.

A new global resettlement scheme will come in to replace the vulnerable persons resettlement scheme and others, which have already helped 16,000 refugees since 2015.

Announcing the plans at the start of World Refugee Week, Mr Javid said the new programme would broaden the geographical focus beyond the Middle East and north Africa, and be more responsive to emergencies.

He said: “Since 2016, Britain has resettled more refugees from outside Europe than any other EU state – and it’s vital we continue to do all we can to help the world’s most vulnerable.

“Under our new scheme, thousands more people fleeing conflict and persecution will have the opportunity to build a new life in the UK.

“I’m proud of the world-leading work we have done in the Middle East and Africa so far – but there is so much more to do.”

The vulnerable person’s resettlement scheme concludes next year but work will continue under the new scheme, pulling in the existing routes for vulnerable children and the gateway protection programme.

A new process for emergency resettlement will also be developed, allowing the UK to respond quickly to instances when there is a heightened need for protection, providing a faster route to resettlement where lives are at risk.
