Notre Dame Holds Its First Mass Since April Fire Destroyed the Cathedral’s Roof and Spire – Urban Christian News
Notre Dame held its first mass since the inferno destroyed the cathedral’s roof and spire, with the Paris archbishop donning a hardhat instead of a mitre.
Saturday’s mass at the Gothic building was led by archbishop Michel Aupetit amid reduced attendance for security reasons.
Around 30 congregants, including priests, canons and a number of workers taking part in the church’s reconstruction, were admitted.
The world watched in horror as the blaze tore through Notre Dame on April 15, plunging France into national mourning over the loss of priceless works of art and its 600-year-old architecture.
Worshippers were not authorised in the cathedral but watched the mass on a Catholic TV station that is broadcasting the service.
The video showed some burnt wood still in the church but a famous statue of the Virgin and Child appeared intact behind wooden construction planks.
The annual Dedication Mass commemorated the cathedral’s consecration as a place of worship and was held in a small side chapel at around 5pm local time.
‘This cathedral is a place of worship, it is its very own and unique purpose,’ Aupetit said.
One French priest called the service ‘a true happiness, full of hope.’

Christian charity launch new resource to support students’ mental well being
Produced in partnership with Space to Breathe, the resource is a response to a recent survey of students that showed over 90 percent of students have had mental health problems or are supporting someone who has poor mental health.
Earlier this week, a survey found two-thirds of students support their mental health issues being disclosed to their parents in extreme circumstances.
There have been concerns about student suicides and the survey indicates worsening levels of anxiety on campus.
The study of more than 14-thousand undergraduates by the Higher Education Policy Institute also discovered university students are significantly more anxious than other young people are.
The resource covers themes such as where to find help, how to face anxiety and how to build resilience.
Each topic is presented along with simple, practical activities to help students develop good mental health.
Lisa Murphy, Acting National Coordinator, said: “Recent research confirms that poor mental health among students is a widespread problem, showing that only 14 percent of students are satisfied with life, and only 17 percent feel their life is worthwhile.
“In response to this we’ve created a resource for students which addresses these symptoms of poor well being and mental ill health, and provides practical steps students can take to reflect, gain perspective and develop coping…

Cultivating healthy Christian attitudes towards gender as sexist ads banned
Following a review which found some campaigns restrict people’s choices, aspirations and opportunities, the ASA have banned companies from showing harmful or offensive scenarios in their advertising.
From adverts to women not being able to park a car, or men who cannot change a nappy, although sometimes the case, there are many men and women who can and do, and adverts which perpetuate potentially damaging gender stereotypes will no long be allowed to air; on TV, radio, online and on social media.
Christian gender justice specialist, Natalie Collins told Premier these adverts can have a damaging effect, she said:
“A big advert in 2017, was one of the things which triggered this whole process, which showed a baby girl growing up to be a ballerina and a baby boy growing up to be a scientist.
“It reinforces limitations and as a society and particularly as Christians, we should be advocating to help people not to be limited by any part of who they are, but actually that we can flourish into all different roles and ways of being.
“So I think that this is just one factor in many factors which leads to limitations on boys and girls,
men and women.”
