Michael Palin warns of deathwatch beetles in UK churches

As a representative for the National Churches Trust (NCT), the Monty Python actor has spoken out about the threats facing churches and chapels in the UK.

Deathwatch beetles can cause significant structural damage to the wood of historic churches and cathedrals as their larvae burrow through the timber.

In an animated film for the charity, Mr Palin is encouraging members of the public to join the NCT’s Friends scheme, to provide urgent repairs in a bid to prevent the closure of historic church buildings across the country.

He said: “Churches and chapels are fascinating and sometimes surprising places to visit,

“They are rich with history and stunning architecture and also places for quiet reflection and venues for concerts, exhibitions and even beer festivals.

“But sadly many are threatened by leaking roofs, crumbling stonework. And even death watch beetles.

“The animation shows just how important churches are to our history and heritage and also to local communities. With post offices, shops and even pubs closing, churches are often the only community building left in many parts of the country.”

The NCT say churches are the heart of local communities and should be preserved for future generations to enjoy.

The trust gave out a total of £1.2 million in grants to churches and chapels in need of urgent repairs in 2018.

Court Orders David Daleiden to Pay $195,000 over Censored Planned Parenthood Videos

Court Orders David Daleiden to Pay $195,000 over Censored Planned Parenthood Videos

Last week the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals upheld a $195,000 fine imposed on pro-life activist David Daleiden. District Judge William Orrick initially imposed the fine because he said Daleiden and his attorneys violated a gag order. The fine is intended to reimburse the National Abortion Federation for legal fees and added security.

The gag order is related to videos which are at the heart of both a civil and criminal trial. In 2014 and 2015, Daleiden and a coworker from the Center for Medical Progress went to the National Abortion Federation’s annual conventions. They posed as fetal tissue researchers and secretly recorded conversations in which participants discussed selling fetal tissue from abortion clinics.

In 2016, the National Abortion Federation sued to have the videos taken down. U.S. District Judge William Orrick III ruled that the duo recorded the videos fraudulently and ordered them to remove the posts and prohibited any further disclosure of them. A year later, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra charged Daleiden and his colleague Sandra Merritt with violating a state law which prohibited the secret recording of conversations.

Daleiden’s criminal attorneys, Steve Cooley and Brent Ferreira, posted the videos on YouTube to “protect Daleiden’s right to a fair trial” after they received them from the State Attorney’s…

Church backs campaign to get people talking

The initiative that aims to combat isolation and explore the benefits of talking to strangers was rolled out across Buses, coaches, trams and trains on Friday, As part of the Crossing Divides On the Move day.

Pastor Oli Stevens from Kings Church Eastbourne told Premier the transport initiative was a great opportunity to connect with those around us: “So often we get so busy with our lives and forget to look up and look to the people that we are sat amongst and ways that we can show kindness towards them striking up a conversation, leaving a random gift for them or something to try and brighten their day.

Community engagement has been a key focus of church life for many years with congregations across the country serving their neighbours through various outreach initiatives.

Kings Church has been using it’s ‘Love Eastbourne’ project to bless strangers across the town through acts of kindness.

Mr Steven’s said it’s important to follow Jesus’ example: “[Jesus says] if I’m the boss, and I wash your feet, you should wash each other’s. I’ve laid down a pattern for you, and what I’ve done, you should do as well.

He added: “I think trying to find ways which we can bless and serve the people amongst us, it’s something that Jesus so clearly models to us, and there’s obviously a great opportunity for us to follow his lead.”

Lesbian Couple Puts Restaurant on Blast after Staff Refused to Host Their Wedding Rehearsal Dinner

Lesbian Couple Puts Restaurant on Blast after Staff Refused to Host Their Wedding Rehearsal Dinner

A lesbian couple in Missouri says a restaurant canceled their wedding rehearsal because they are both women.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, bride-to-be Kendall Brown said she told Madison’s Cafe in O’Fallon, Mo. this week that she was marrying another woman. The restaurant had called to confirm details for the dinner and asked the groom’s name.

Brown said the restaurant then told her that she would have to find another venue. She said the woman told her that she didn’t condone the relationship and that her relationship was unhealthy.

“And then I just hung up the phone,” she said.

Madison’s Cafe declined to comment.

After Brown posted about the call on social media, she said many other places have offered to host the couple’s rehearsal dinner. She and partner Mindy Rackley, 36, are hoping to make a decision soon.

“It’s been extremely overwhelming, like the outpouring of love and support that we’ve had from friends and family and people we don’t even know and people in different states,” she said.

The couple said they did not pay the restaurant a deposit and will not be pursuing legal action.

“We really aren’t trying to harm them in any way,” she said. “We don’t want to fight hate with hate. And we’re really just wanting to bring about awareness… so nobody else has to feel the…

Christian family banned from home schooling back in court to prove school attendance

The Wunderlich’s have been battling to home school their children and recently lost their case at the European Court of Human Rights.

Home schooling is illegal in Germany.

Petra and Dirk Wunderlich took legal action after more than 30 police officers and social workers raided their home and forcefully removed their children back in 2013.

They were later returned.

While they are continuing to fight the case, the family have been requested to return to a court in Darmstadt to ensure the children are attending school.

Criticising the continued action facing the family, Robert Clarke, Director of European Advocacy for religious freedom charity ADF International and lead counsel for the Wunderlich family, said: “The Wunderlich family has experienced significant turmoil at the hands of the German authorities.

“In the end, the children were assessed as doing well. It is hard to understand why the German authorities persist in challenging the custody of the children.

“Why would anyone be interested in removing the children from their loving family home after German courts and even the European Court of Human Rights acknowledged that ‘the learning assessment had shown that the knowledge level of the children was not alarming and that the children were not being kept from school against their will.'”

Dirk Wunderlich said: “It is…

Part of Christian School in Eastern Uganda Torn Down

Part of Christian School in Eastern Uganda Torn Down

NAIROBIKenya, June 14, 2019 (Morning Star News) – One of two buildings of a Christian primary school in eastern Uganda was demolished after local Muslims who opposed it threatened “tough action,” sources said.

The building containing three of Hope of Glory Primary School’s seven classrooms was destroyed before dawn on June 2 in predominantly Muslim Kabuna village, Budaka District, following a series of threats that area Muslims sent to the school, officials said. The private school offers instruction in primary grades one through seven.

One of the aims of the school is to provide education to formerly Muslim children whose parents have disowned them for putting their faith in Christ, said a school official whose name is withheld for security reasons. Among the 173 students from eight districts, 57 are converts from Islam, he said. Another seven children were Muslims who became Christians after they began attending the school.

Complaining that worship at night was disturbing them, area Muslims had written several letters to Kabuna educational officials, the Budaka District police commander and the Budaka Resident District Commissioner demanding closure of the school, he said.

“If you do not stop night prayers, then we are going to take tough action against the school,” read one anonymous letter to school officials a week before the June 2 demolition, he said.

“We…

Church hosts Grenfell memorial two years on from blaze

Friday marks 24 months since a small kitchen fire in a west London high-rise turned into the most deadly domestic blaze since the Second World War.

Bereaved families gathered for a memorial service at the nearby St Helen’s Church in the morning, to begin a day of remembrance.

Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist and Grenfell survivor Leanne Mya sang during the service, which was attended by Communities Secretary James Brokenshire and fire minister Nick Hurd.

Afterwards white doves were released, and later there was a private gathering by the tower where survivors and bereaved laid wreaths.

Karim Mussilhy, whose uncle died in the fire, said it is important to stand together and continue campaigning because “we want to make sure the general public understand that the issues of Grenfell are still happening today”.

He told the Press Association: “Our plan is to come together with the rest of the community and be with each other, share some tears with each other, smiles with each other, and put our arms around each other and remember our loved ones and pay our respects.

PA

“We also want to be a presence to everyone else, show them that we are still here and we are still standing strong together, dignified, respectful, we aren’t going to go away, we’re not going to fade away and we’re not going to let others forget our loved ones…

Southern Baptists Approve Amendments Dealing with Sexual Abuse, Racism

Southern Baptists Approve Amendments Dealing with Sexual Abuse, Racism

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (RNS) — Southern Baptists, faced in recent months with hundreds of allegations of sexual abuse in its ranks, have overwhelmingly adopted changes to governing documents that will bring greater visibility to their desire to disaffiliate with churches that do not handle instances of abuse properly.

A new standing “Credentials Committee” also will consider whether churches are not “in friendly cooperation” for that and other reasons, including involvement in “discriminatory behavior on the basis of ethnicity.”

Delegates, called messengers, also voted Tuesday (June 11) at their annual meeting to amend the constitution of the Southern Baptist Convention so that it will make explicit that churches that mishandle cases of abuse or racial discrimination are not welcome.

“I believe this is a very, very significant moment in the history of the Southern Baptist Convention,” said new SBC Executive Committee President Ronnie Floyd.

He said the nation’s largest Protestant denomination has “given a clear signal not only about what we believe about sexual abuse, but we also stand against all ethnic discrimination in the United States and around the world.”

The constitutional amendments will need to be considered a second time at next year’s annual meeting before they can become official.

Moments after the votes, about 50 abuse victim…
