The service will be held this Saturday, 15th of June, exactly two months after fire broke out beneath the cathedral’s roof.

“The date that was chosen is symbolic,” the cathedral’s rector, Monsignor Patrick Chuvet told Catholic website La Croix International.

The 15th of June is not just two months’ since the fire broke out, but also an important date in Notre Dame’s history. Each year the anniversary of the dedication of Notre Dame’s altar is celebrated in mid-June with the feast of the dedication of the cathedral.

Mass will be celebrated in a side chapel which was not damaged in the fire. Priests and the 20 people attending the service will be required to wear hard hats, as parts of the cathedral are still unsafe.

The event will be broadcast live on French television, so that people across the country can participate.

La Croix International quoteed Monsignor Chauvet saying he hopes that the Mass will draw attention to the Christian message of the fire-damaged building.

“It is very important to be able to make the world aware that the role of the cathedral is to show the glory of God,” he added.

“Celebrating the Eucharist on that day, even in very small groups, will be the sign of this glory and grace.”

Paul Cook, Tearfund’s Head of Advocacy told Premier while he welcomes the pledge, more could be achieved sooner.

Christian and recently retired Inspector at Sussex Police, Clare McKnight, worked part time and told Premier: “I think it’s extremely good news.

“I think it will absolutely benefit the organisation as a whole and individuals who have got a good skill set that precluded them in the past, due to not being able to give the 40 hours a week.

“When I joined, you had to be full time but in my career, we did move over to part time working for those already in the organisation. So we have made quite a lot of changes over time.

“But I think obviously, this time is now ripe for ensuring that everybody gets that opportunity from the outset.”

“Policing is very similar to a lot of our Christian values. We serve the public as we would serve God and hopefully a lot of people will join with this new change in their policy.”

The Met hopes the change will make police work more attractive to people with family commitments.

Speaking on the Graham Norton Show on BBC 1 he explained how his love of the Church led him down a path towards ordination.

“When I was a teenager I loved so much about the Church – the music, the liturgy, the architecture,” he said. “I liked the clothes…I knew I could deliver fantastic sermons.

“I was sent to see the Bishop of Lynn who decided I would make a wonderful priest but there was one small problem in that I didn’t believe in God.”

His career led in a different direction which has seen him last some 40 years in the entertainment business winning numerous awards for his writing, acting and comedy.

The 61-year-old went on to reveal he still has a strong connection with the Church.

He said: “I love everything about the Church I just can’t take the story seriously…I can’t take the final leap.”

Back in 2015 Fry received widespread criticism after labelling God “mean minded and stupid”.
