Relics of Fatima child saints stolen from Italian church

The Rev Andrea Ronconi said small pieces of clothing belonging to the Portuguese shepherd children, who were made saints in 2017, were stolen on Wednesday.

Police are looking for two suspects.

Father Ronconi, priest at the Jesus Christ Divine Worker parish, said he was “heartbroken and mortified” by the theft, which also included copies of a crown and rosary of the Fatima Virgin Mary statue.

Francisco and Jacinta Marto, who reported visions of the Virgin Mary more than 100 years ago, were declared saints on May 13 2017.

The Portuguese town of Fatima has become one of the world’s most important Catholic shrines.

Evangelical Financial Watchdog Faces Scrutiny over Backing of Errant Megachurch

Evangelical Financial Watchdog Faces Scrutiny over Backing of Errant Megachurch

(RNS) — About five years ago, the Village Church of Barrington, a congregation northwest of Chicago with a $1.8 million annual budget and average weekly attendance of 600, decided to become accredited with the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability.

ECFA — founded in 1979 to promote financial integrity in Christian ministries and avert heightened government regulation in the wake of televangelist scandals — claims nearly 2,400 members.

Those member churches and nonprofits receive more than $29 billion in annual charitable donations from 20 million donors, according to the Virginia-based ECFA.

The Village Church already allowed members to reviews its books and prided itself on having a transparent approach to finances.

Joining ECFA would help cement its commitment to transparency.

“We thought it would give donors confidence to know that we were doing things by the book,” said David Jones, the Village Church’s senior pastor.

But now — amid scrutiny over ECFA’s years-long failure to identify financial misdeeds at Harvest Bible Chapel, a Chicago-area megachurch that fired its founder and senior pastor, James MacDonald, earlier this year — the Village Church is rethinking its relationship with the Christian watchdog group.

In December, ECFA issued a statement saying that Harvest was in compliance with its rules. Not long…

Pastor Raymond Koh’s abuduction to be investigated

Home Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin, said a special taskforce will investigate the abduction following a report carried out by the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia, SUHAKAM (Suruhanjaya Hak Asasi Manusia Malaysia) that concluded that his disappearance was executed by state agents.

The human rights panel in Malaysia was unanimous that Pastor Koh was a victim of an enforced disappearance.

He went missing on 13th February 2017.

In the attack, which was caught on CCTV, at least ten men in black SUVs blocked a major, bundled Raymond out of his car and into another vehicle and abducted him in under a minute. He has not been seen since.

In April 2019, it was announced at a press conference that he was probably taken by police and targeted by religious authorities.

The chair of the panel, Dato’ Mah Weng Kai said: “The direct and circumstantial evidence in Pastor Raymond Koh’s case proves, on a balance of probabilities, that he was abducted by State agents, namely, the Special Branch, Bukit Aman, Kuala Lumpur.”

The panel also concluded that there had been state involvement in the disappearance of activist Amri Che Mat, who is a Shia Muslim, a branch of Islam banned in Malaysia.

Henrietta Blyth, CEO of the religious freedom charity Open Doors UK and Ireland, said: “The SUHAKAM report was a very significant and bold step forward in pursuit of those who are behind Pastor Koh’s…

Survivors call for end to secrecy in religious setting to stop child abuse

People who were sexually abused in religious institutions were less likely to report the abuse at the time than survivors of abuse in other settings, a report by the Truth Project found.

More than half of those who took part in the project, which is part of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA), said they felt shame, embarrassment or guilt around what happened to them.

The report, which brings together responses from 183 individuals who were sexually abused as children in religious institutions or by clergy or church staff in other settings, found that victims in almost half of cases (48%) knew of someone else being abused at the time.

More than two thirds (68%) of those abused in religious institutions said they had not reported their abuse at the time, while this figure was lower (54%) for people abused in non-religious settings.

Survivors said secrecy in religious organisations and an assumption around the morality of perpetrators must change, to stop abuse happening in future.

The report said: “Culturally, participants stated that the secrecy that comes from the sanctity of religious institutions and the assumption of the automatic morality of those involved in them had to be addressed.

“Politically and professionally, it was suggested that victims and survivors needed to be at the centre of all concerns, actions and support relating to…

Blind and autistic performer reminds us that every life is sacred

Kodi Lee played the piano and sang on America’s Got Talent when it premiered Tuesday night. The twenty-two-year-old is blind and autistic, yet he was so amazing that he received a standing ovation from the judges and a “golden buzzer” sending him directly into the finals.

I was deeply moved by his performance and urge you to watch it.

It turns out, we should not be surprised by Kodi’s success. As his website states, he is one of approximately twenty-five people in the world with such perfect pitch and an audio photographic memory (he can recall and perform music after just one hearing). He has mastered Bach, Chopin, and Mozart, and also performs rock, jazz, R&B, and pop. He was recently invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

As I watched Kodi’s remarkable America’s Got Talent performance, this sobering thought occurred to me: What if, as a result of his challenges, he had been aborted?

Two “Christian” arguments for abortion

I appeared last week on Equipped with Chris Brooks, a national radio program hosted by one of the most brilliant and insightful ministers I know. As Chris and I discussed the ongoing abortion controversy, a listener called to state that she is pro-life personally but does not believe she has the right to force her beliefs on others.

In a postmodern culture where “truth” is personal and subjective, her approach likely resonates with many.

A second abortion narrative is illustrated by a fascinating and troubling interview I read this week. Rev. Jes Kast is a United Church of Christ pastor and member of the clergy-advocacy board of Planned Parenthood. She recently told The Atlantic that she moved from her family’s pro-life position to the belief that “every person I encounter, including myself, has the right to their body. When that bodily autonomy is taken away, to me, that is against Christian scripture, and is against the Gospel I believe in.”

In her view,…

Christian comedian John Archer narrowly misses out on Britain’s Got Talent final

He was voted in the top three by the British public but lost out in the judges vote to fellow comedian Kojo Amin.

It came after a stunning performance at the Hammersmith Apollo in London which received a standing ovation by the audience and the judges.

Judge David Walliams said: “It was just one of those magic moments. You are a superstar.”

The contestant, who turned 59 yesterday, merges comedy with magic, something he has been doing for years before auditioning for the reality show.

He has performed at the Christian festivals and visited churches, entertaining congregations with magic tricks and speaking about his faith.

In the first round of the talent show Archer told the judges he ahd long considered auditioning: “I have thought about it and I’ve chickened out and so I got to the point this year where I thought, ‘face your fears and do it’ and so I’m here.”

The comedian has spoken previously in interviews about how he came to faith after dating a Christian girl who dragged him along to church and later met a Christian friend at Art college who led him to committing to Christ.

He’s featured on Premier Christian Radio several times.

Archer still has a small chance of making the final as the judges will put through a wildcard act who didn’t make it through the semi finals.
