New York Times Admits in Correction: Jesus Wasn’t Palestinian

New York Times Admits in Correction: Jesus Wasn’t Palestinian

One week after publishing a column saying Jesus likely was Palestinian, The New York Times admitted it made a mistake.

The Times posted a correction April 27, blaming the mistake on an edit.

“Because of an editing error, an article last Saturday referred incorrectly to Jesus’s background,” the correction said. “While he lived in an area that later came to be known as Palestine, Jesus was a Jew who was born in Bethlehem.”

A week earlier, The Times ran a column by journalist Eric V Copage about Jesus’ color and heritage. The column included this sentence: “Jesus, born in Bethlehem, was most likely a Palestinian man with dark skin.” That line has been changed to read: “But Jesus, a Jew born in Bethlehem, presumably had the complexion of a Middle Eastern man.”

The flub in The New York Times column occurred the day before Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota re-tweeted a tweet claiming Jesus was Palestinian. Omar is Muslim.

The tweet by Islamic scholar Omar Suleiman she re-tweeted read, “I was once asked by a relative who is a Palestinian Christian why the Christian right in America largely supports their oppression. ‘Don’t they know we’re Christian too? Do they even consider us human? Don’t they know Jesus was a Palestinian?’”

Omar’s re-tweet sparked a backlash on social media. That included a response from Michael Dickson,…

Over 190 clergy condemn Westminster Abbey’s nuclear deterrent service

The service, due to be held on Friday 3rd May, is invitation-only and will ‘recognise fifty years of continuous at sea deterrent’ according to Westminster Abbey’s website.

The Royal Navy are planning a series of events to ‘celebrate’ the patrols of submariners since 1969.

However, the Christian Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament states the event should not go ahead as it is at odds with the Church of England’s policy to “work tirelessly” for the elimination of nuclear weapons.

General Secretary for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Kate Hudson told Premier: “Many people feel that it’s absolutely inappropriate that weapons of mass destruction are being thanked for in a place of worship.

“Weapons of mass destruction are indiscriminate killers, if they were ever used that would be contrary to international humanitarian law.

“Hundreds of thousands if not millions of innocent civilians would be killed.”

The organisation says the government is also ignoring its obligations to the International Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) – a treaty signed by the UK in 1968 agreeing to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons worldwide.

“Round about the time that these patrols came on the stream 50 years ago, Britain had also just signed up to the NPT saying that we would be getting rid of our nuclear weapons.

“And of course, we haven’t done that. And in fact, we’re now on to building our third nuclear weapons system.

“It shows that not only are we out of step with current…

Venezuelan Opposition Leader Calls Citizens to the Streets, Says Coup Is Underway

Venezuelan Opposition Leader Calls Citizens to the Streets, Says Coup Is Underway

Early Tuesday morning – after years of deteriorating conditions under the leadership of Nicolás Maduro – the leader of Venezuela’s opposition party, Juan Guaidó, called the Venezuelan people to action.

According to the Guardian, Guaidó took to Twitter at dawn to share a video announcing that the military was standing with the opposition and that this was the “final phase” toward freedom and democracy in Venezuela. The video showed Guadió surrounded by military personnel.

After this, with the help of the military, the opposition leader reportedly freed opposition politician Leopoldo López who was arrested as a political prisoner in 2014 and was under house arrest.

Lopez seemingly confirmed his rescue tweeting, “The definitive phase towards the end of the usurpation has begun, Operation Freedom. I’ve been freed by soldiers following the constitution and President Guaidó. I’m at the La Carlota base. Let’s all mobilise. It’s time to win Freedom. Strength and Faith.”

The Associated Press reports that López also called on the people to take to the streets saying, “This is the moment of all Venezuelans, those in uniform and those who aren’t. Everyone should come to the streets,…

Children forced to go to faith schools against parents’ wishes, says Labour peer

The Labour peer raised her concerns around the availability of pupil places in secular settings.

Her comments met with a strong defence of faith schools from Lord Deben, the Tory former cabinet minister John Gummer, who said they were “extremely popular”.

Speaking in the House of Lords, Baroness Bakewell pointed out that 52% of British adults identified themselves as having no religion, while 53% of rural primary schools were faith schools.

She said: “Almost three in 10 families in England live in areas where most or all of the closest primary schools are faith schools.

“So what has the Government to say about children effectively being forced into faith schools against their parents wishes?”

Education minister Lord Agnew of Oulton said: “Where parents are not offered a place for schools they expressed a preference for, the local authority must offer them a place at another suitable school with places available.”

He highlighted figures that showed 93% of parents got one of their first three choices of secondary school in 2018, and this rose to 97% for primaries.

Lord Deben said: “Faith schools are extremely popular, very often overcrowded because people want their children to go to faith schools.

“Faith schools are a product of the people who first started education in this country, and we ought to be very proud of the Catholic and Anglican schools which serve…

After Attack, Pastor in Nepal Filled with Fear – and Faith

After Attack, Pastor in Nepal Filled with Fear – and Faith

NEW DELHI, April 30, 2019 (Morning Star News) – More than a month after men claiming to be Maoists in Nepal assaulted Dhurba Kumar Pariyar, the 40-year-old pastor is still physically and mentally traumatized.

“I still have headache and chest pain, though I am under strong medication,” Pastor Pariyar told Morning Star News.

He later quoted Matthew 5:10, Christ saying those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake are blessed.

“I find courage in reading of the persecution that my fellow Christians are undergoing,” he said. “My suffering is little in comparison.”

One of the leaders at Devotees Nepali Assembly in the Nepali capital of Kathmandu, the pastor was riding a motorcycle on his way back from distributing free toys and stationary to Dalit children on March 24 in Sarlahi District when two motorcyclists with riders on extra seats stopped him 36 miles from Mahottari at about 7 p.m., he said.

Accompanying Pastor Pariyar on another motorcycle was the chief guest of a program organized by a Non-Governmental Organization for poor Dalits in Ramgopalpur, Mahottari District.

One of the riders asked Pastor Pariyar his name, and as soon as he confirmed his identity, the rider hit his motorcycle with a thick wooden stick while the other pulled him off, he said.

“One of them caught hold of me from my chest and pulled me down from my motorbike and dragged me…

Church warden and magician go on trial for pensioner murder

The process to select a jury to try Benjamin Field, 28, and Martyn Smith, 32, began at Oxford Crown Court on Tuesday before High Court Judge Mr Justice Sweeney.

A panel of 27 potential jurors was whittled down to 21, of whom 12 will be sworn in to hear the case.

Field, a church warden, and Smith, a magician, deny involvement in the deaths of Peter Farquhar, 69, and Ann Moore-Martin, 83, who lived three doors away from each other in the picturesque village of Maids Moreton in Buckinghamshire.

Detectives launched a murder inquiry more than two years after the death in October 2015 of Mr Farquhar, a guest lecturer at the University of Buckingham, and seven months after the death of retired headmistress Ms Moore-Martin in May 2017.

Field and Smith deny charges of murdering Mr Farquhar and conspiracy to murder Ms Moore-Martin. Field also denies an alternative charge of attempting to murder Ms Moore-Martin.

The pair deny two charges of conspiracy to defraud and a single charge of possession of an article for use in fraud.

Field, of Wellingborough Road, Olney, Buckinghamshire, has pleaded guilty to four charges of fraud and two offences of burglary.

Smith, of Penhalvean, Redruth, Cornwall, denies three charges of fraud and two offences of burglary.

Tom Field, 24, of Wellingborough Road, Olney, Buckinghamshire, faces trial accused of a single charge of fraud.

The trial was…

USCIRF Report: China, Two Dozen Other Countries Top Religious Freedom Offenders List

USCIRF Report: China, Two Dozen Other Countries Top Religious Freedom Offenders List

WASHINGTON (RNS) — With its particular focus on China’s oppression of religious and human rights, an independent watchdog group has decried in its annual report the state of religious freedom across the globe.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, a bipartisan organization created 20 years ago, concludes in its Monday (April 29) report that “innumerable believers and nonbelievers across the globe continued in 2018 to experience manifold suffering due to their beliefs.”

The commission cites dozens of countries in its 234-page report but especially notes China’s repression of a range of religious beliefs — including Tibetan Buddhists, Christians, Falun Gong practitioners, Uighur Muslims and human rights defenders.

While the State Department’s annual international religious freedom report covers every nation in the world other than the U.S., USCIRF annually documents fewer than 30 countries that have the most significant religious freedom violations.

USCIRF recommends that the State Department redesignate the following 10 countries as “countries of particular concern,” or CPCs: Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

The State Department designated these countries as CPCs in November.

USCIRF thinks six additional countries should be cited as CPCs: Central…

Portsmouth MP backs church transformation to serve ‘forgotten’ part of city

The MP joined local residents to visit St Margaret’s Community Church on Highland Road, Eastney, when it recently opened its doors for the first time in more than three years after it was restructured and declared safe.

After meeting architects who are drawing up plans to further refurbish the building, Mr Morgan said: “My grandparents were actually married in this church, but it’s the first time I’ve ever been inside.

“The building has huge potential to serve a part of our city that often gets forgotten.

“This has been a good opportunity to hear what local people are saying about the place of the church within their community.

“I take away a sense that this church can show compassion to meet the needs of local people, and I’m impressed by the way that the church is already reaching out to them. It has my full support.”

The church closed in 2015 because its roof leaked, its windows needed repairing, and there was a danger of plaster falling from the ceiling.

The relaunch of St Margaret’s Community Church is just one of several new worshipping communities being created in Portsmouth diocese as part of its ‘live, pray, serve’ strategy, which aims to deepen the faith of worshippers, help them to engage better with their local communities, and enlarge their congregations.

UK Christian musicians set to record Cyclone Idai relief single

The project, ‘One Voice’ led by Lawrence Johnson who founded London Community Gospel Choir, will help raise funds for development charity Tearfund, who are on the ground supplying emergency relief.

Cyclone Idai struck the coastline of Mozambique on 14th March and left a trail of devastation and heavy loss of life.

The UN has said 1.7 million people in Mozambique lived in the path of the cyclone, with a further 920,000 people affected in Malawi and many thousands more in Zimbabwe.

Speaking on behalf of One Voice, Les Moir from the Christian record label Integrity Music, said: “Cyclone Idai came just before the harvest season and washed away crops that would have provided food for this year.

“We’re partnering with Tearfund who are working closely with national partners to support the relief effort – delivering emergency shelter kits, food such as pulses and maize flour, water purification tablets, and urgent health assistance.

“Tearfund’s immediate response has been on saving lives, but now as the flood waters recede and the extent of the damage is being realised, communities are beginning to think about how they will rebuild their lives.

PA

“We want to help them rebuild and find the strength to carry on.”

Meanwhile, tropical Cyclone Kenneth – the strongest storm to hit the region since records began -…

Understanding the Nominally Churched – Rainer on Leadership #532

Podcast Episode #532

SUBSCRIBE:
iTunesRSSStitcherTuneIn RadioGoogle Play • iHeart Radio • Spotify

To reach the nominally churched and to get them more involved in church, you must first understand them. Today we discuss who the nominally churched are before we discuss how to reach them in the next episode.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • The early college years is one of the most common times people drop out of church for a season.
  • Family connections can be a clear draw to return to church.
  • Divorce is the most common reason for adults to drop out of church or leave a church.
  • If someone goes from churched to nominally churched, they’ll likely be unchurched within 6-9 months. People usually don’t stay nominally churched.

The nine aspects to understand about the nominally churches that we discuss are:

  1. Those who attend 15 or fewer times a year
  2. Not unchurched
  3. Not inactive or CEO
  4. Often family connections
  5. Often dealing with life stage issues
  6. Sometimes responding to hurt from the church
  7. Often not Christians
  8. Typically an intermediate stage
  9. How do reach them?
