Topic: Deadly Generosity (Open Heaven 23 April 2019)

Memorise: “1 My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger, 2 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.”- Proverbs 6:1-2

Read: Genesis 43:1-10 (KJV)

1 And the famine was sore in the land.

2 And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food.

3 And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.

4 If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food:

5 But if thou wilt not send him, we will not go down: for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.

6 And Israel said, Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?

7 And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?

8 And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones.

9 I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever:

10 For except we had lingered, surely now we had returned this second time.

Bible in One Year: Genesis 27-28, Jeremiah 23:16-32

Open Heaven 23 April 2019 Tuesday MESSAGE:

A guarantor is someone who voluntarily becomes the legal Surety for another person’s debts or responsibilities. He or she is a person who undertakes to ensure that an agreed future event takes place. A guarantor also comes to the aid of someone else to meet a need at a cost which involves a great deal of personal risk. In Proverbs 17:18 and proverbs 22-26, the Bible teaches against standing as Surety for friends and acquaintances. These passages indicate that anyone who offers himself or herself as Surety for debts is a foolish person without understanding. Following common occurrences around the world today, it is only advisable to stand as guarantor for members of your immediate family. Based on God’s understanding of human nature, the Bible views the role of a guarantor as a form of deadly generosity. God knows that the guarantor will always be left in a vulnerable position and is bound to suffer loss in the long run. God did not take this position only because of His knowledge of human nature, but also because of Christ’s first-hand experience as the ultimate guarantor of Mankind’s salvation. Hebrews 4:15 says:

“For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”

Having suffered so much to obtain our Salvation, Jesus knows that it will be difficult for any human being to survive the disappointments and pain that comes with being a surety.

The Old Testament records one incident relating to someone standing Surety for another. In it, Judah stood as a guarantor for Benjamin, to save Jacob’s family from starvation (Genesis 43:9, Genesis 44:32). Similarly, Jesus is the only person in the New Testament who stands as a guarantor. Hebrews 7:22 says:

“By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.”

Jesus is the mediator of the Covenant between God and His people, and He is also its guarantor. God’s promises are all guaranteed in Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20). Knowing the consequences of standing as Surety for anyone, Jesus willingly chose to stand for us because of the love He has for us. He paid the price of His life and today He sits in heaven as the One who guarantees the term of the New Covenant that grants us access to the family of God. How generous He is! Jesus is still offering His extravagant generosity to all today, and it is an offer of love. Accept it today and your life will never be the same again!

Open Heaven 23 April 2019 Tuesday Action Point:

Give God thanks for His extravagant generosity in making you a partaker of His new covenant.

Open Heaven 23 April 2019 Tuesday Hymn 9: In Christ Alone

1 In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

2 In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
‘Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live.

3 There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

4 No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.

Muslim Fulani Herdsmen Massacre Christians after Baby Dedication in Nigeria

Muslim Fulani Herdsmen Massacre Christians after Baby Dedication in Nigeria

JOSNigeria, April 18, 2019 (Morning Star News) – Muslim Fulani herdsmen killed 17 Christians who had gathered after a baby dedication at a church in central Nigeria, including the mother of the child, sources said.

Safaratu John Kabiru Ali, the mother of the baby, was slain in the attack on Sunday (April 14) in Konshu-Numa village, in Nasarawa state’s Akwanga County, which also took the lives of people ranging in age from 10 to 80. The baby’s father, John Kabiru Ali, was shot and is in critical condition, sources said. He is receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, in Nasarawa state.

The attack took place at about 7 p.m. as Christians in the predominantly Christian community gathered to eat after the child was dedicated that morning at the Ruhaniya Baptist Church in the village.

The massacred Christians were buried on Wednesday (April 17) after a funeral service at the Baptist church.

A resident of Akwanga town who lost relatives in the shooting, Jacob Tantse, told Morning Star News that 17 Christians were killed, including 10 members of the Ruhaniya Baptist Church, five members of Evangelical Reformed Church of Christ (ERCC), one member of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), and a musician playing for guests.

Tantse identified those killed as Ali Nkene, 80; Gode Kako, 13; Afiniki Kako, 10; Matthew…

Sri Lanka Bombings an ‘Attack on Christianity,’ Pence Says of Blasts that Killed 290

Sri Lanka Bombings an ‘Attack on Christianity,’ Pence Says of Blasts that Killed 290

Vice President Mike Pence is calling Sunday’s Sri Lankan terrorist attack that resulted in at least 290 deaths and 500 injuries an “attack on Christianity” and religious freedom.

The coordinated attacks on Easter Sunday took place around 8:45 a.m. local time and involved eight bombings on churches and hotels. Among the dead were more than 102 worshipers at St. Sebastian’s Church, a Catholic church in Negombo. Some 1,000 people were attending the Easter service.

“You can see pieces of flesh thrown all over the walls and on the sanctuary and even outside of the church,” Father Edmond Tillekeratne, social communications director for the Archdiocese of Colombo in Sri Lanka, told CNN.

Sri Lanka is an island nation off the coast of India. It is a predominantly Buddhist country, with Christians comprising only about 7-8 percent of the population.

“@POTUS and I are monitoring the horrific attacks on those celebrating Easter in Sri Lanka. Our hearts & prayers are with the victims & their families,” Pence tweeted. “This atrocity is an attack on Christianity & religious freedom everywhere. No one should ever be in fear in a house of worship.”

Pence’s comment was posted several hours after Trump posted his own tweet, saying, “The United States offers heartfelt condolences to the great people of Sri Lanka. We stand ready…

Supreme Court Agrees to Hear Major LGBT Discrimination Case

Supreme Court Agrees to Hear Major LGBT Discrimination Case

The U.S. Supreme Court Monday agreed to hear a major gay rights case that will determine whether federal law bans employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

At issue is Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bars discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin. Lower courts have disagreed whether “sex” encompasses sexual orientation and gender identity.

It could be the biggest gay rights decision since the high court in 2015 legalized gay marriage nationwide and could have a major impact on employment practices and, potentially, religious freedom disputes.

Oral arguments will be held during the next term.

Congress passed and President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

“These are important policy questions that the people have the right to decide through their elected officials,” said Jim Campbell, senior counsel of the Christian legal group Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF). “Unelected officials – whether bureaucrats or judges – don’t have the power to make these choices for us.”

The Supreme Court agreed to take up three cases, including one involving R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes, which was sued by a former employee who is biologically male but identifies as female and wanted to dress as a woman at work. That former employee is Aimee Stephens (formerly known…

Woman May Sue after Uber Driver Says He Can’t Take Her to Abortion Clinic

Woman May Sue after Uber Driver Says He Can’t Take Her to Abortion Clinic

A woman who says an Uber driver dropped her off near a gas station and refused to continue a trip to an abortion clinic says she is considering a lawsuit.

It’s unclear, though, if she has a solid case.

The unidentified 20-year-old college woman wrote in a now-viral Reddit post that she learned she was pregnant and decided to have an abortion because she is “in no position to care for a child.” Although there is a Planned Parenthood near her Cornell campus in Ithaca, N.Y., she chose to visit an abortion clinic an hour away because it could get her in quicker.

She then scheduled an Uber ride to the clinic. After about five minutes in the car, the driver asked, “Are we going to a Planned Parenthood?” She said “no” – the clinic isn’t a Planned Parenthood – but the driver was persistent and asked a few minutes later, “Is it an abortion clinic?”

She remained quiet. The driver then mentioned that his wife was pregnant, and he told her, “You’re going to regret this decision for the rest of your life,” according to her Reddit post. He also described abortion in detail and said, “There is so much they don’t tell you.”

“After we were about halfway to the destination, he suddenly pulls over with no warning. There was a gas station and a closed antiques store, and around us was farmland and forest,” she wrote.

The driver…

ECFA Ousts Chicago-Area Megachurch Harvest Bible Chapel

ECFA Ousts Chicago-Area Megachurch Harvest Bible Chapel

CHICAGO (RNS) — The Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability, a Christian financial watchdog group, has terminated the membership of Harvest Bible Chapel.

The council pointed to “significant violations” of several of its financial standards in a written statement released Wednesday evening (April 17).

“ECFA continues to champion integrity in God’s Kingdom,” ECFA President Dan Busby said in the statement. “We are committed to applying our standards rigorously and consistently.”

The group had suspended the Chicago-area megachurch last month after church leaders admitted “a lack of financial control and oversight” under Harvest’s former pastor, James MacDonald.

“In addition, we have identified there was a separate budget for the Senior Pastor’s office over which there was not sufficient controls and oversight,” according to the most recent update from the church’s Harvest 2020 team, formed in the wake of MacDonald’s firing.

In March, ECFA said that “new information” led the watchdog group to investigate whether the church has violated ECFA’s financial standards.

ECFA requires member organizations to demonstrate compliance with its Seven Standards of Responsible Stewardship.

Its investigation found Harvest violated its standards regarding governance; financial oversight, which requires member organizations to “prepare complete and…

Gallup: Number of Americans Who Belong to a Church or House of Worship Plummets

Gallup: Number of Americans Who Belong to a Church or House of Worship Plummets

(RNS) — Most Americans still say they believe in God, but their involvement in organized religion continues to wane.

A new Gallup report found that only half of Americans say they belong to a church or other religious body, down from 69% two decades earlier.

Most of the decline is tied to the rise of the so-called “nones” — those who claim no religious affiliation. Gallup found that the share of Americans who claim a religious identity declined from 90% to 77% in recent decades.

But even those who claim a faith tradition may not belong to a religious congregation or community, according to the report, which compared data from 1998-2000 to data from 2016-2018.

At the turn of the century, Gallup said, 73% of religious Americans belonged to a house of worship. That’s dropped to 64% today.

“The still-sizable proportion of religious Americans also contribute to declining church membership, as fewer in this group belong to a church than did so two decades ago,” the report states.

Being part of a house of worship is no longer necessary for a growing number of religious Americans, said Tim Carney, author of “Alienated America.”

“This data confirms what we’ve been seeing for decades: American life is becoming deinstitutionalized,” Carney said. “Americans are less likely to belong to anything. In America, historically, the thing most…

Nigeria: Herdsmen Attacks, Boko Haram and the Cross

Nigeria: Herdsmen Attacks, Boko Haram and the Cross

JOSNigeria, April 22, 2019 (Morning Star News) – At midnight on April 14, I received a phone call about an attack in Konshu village, confirming my fear that it was only a matter of time before Muslim Fulani herdsmen atrocities in Nigeria reached my native home area of Akwanga, Nasarawa state.

In the course of investigating anti-Christian violence throughout Nigeria, I have seen things that drove me to tears. I have entered rooms and houses that were covered with blood. I have seen bodies that were shot and butchered; corpses of pregnant women who had their stomachs ripped opened, the bodies of unborn babies strewn about; homes destroyed; mass graves.

In some of these attacks, entire families were killed. In a visit to one state in northern Nigeria, I went to 13 villages that were desolate as a result of herdsmen attacks. In another state, I visited eight churches that were bombed in one day, and in one town I saw the only four Christians who survived a Boko Haram onslaught. They were in hiding after all other Christians fled.

I met with kidnapped girls from Chibok, Borno state who escaped from captivity, and hearing tales of how they were taken to the Sambisa Forest made my heart bleed. I met widows whose husbands were shot or butchered to death. I met orphans who lost their parents to herdsmen or Boko Haram assaults.

My blood pressure, which has shot up as a result of these…

Christian Author and Speaker Rachel Held Evans Placed in Medically Induced Coma

Christian Author and Speaker Rachel Held Evans Placed in Medically Induced Coma

Progressive Christian speaker and author Rachel Held Evans has been placed in a medically induced coma.

According to a post on Evans’ blog written by her husband Daniel Evans, the Search for Sunday author was placed in a medically induced coma on Friday after she began to experience seizures as a result of an infection.

Daniel Evans wrote, “During treatment for an infection Rachel began exhibiting unexpected symptoms. Doctors found that her brain was experiencing constant seizures. She is currently in the ICU. She is in a medically induced coma while the doctors work to determine the cause and solution.”

On April 14, Evans took to Twitter to ask her followers to pray for her noting that she had both the flu and a UTI and was suffering from a severe allergic reaction to the antibiotics doctors had prescribed her. Evans’ Tweet seemed optimistic, however, as she went on to joke that she might miss popular TV show Game of Thrones.

Seemingly, Evans’ symptoms only got worse leading to her being placed in a medically induced coma.

The announcement of Evans’ hospitalization shocked many in the faith community…

Christian Hip Hop Group Shares a Message of Hope to the Masses

Christian Hip Hop Group Shares a Message of Hope to the Masses

Christian hip hop duo, Social Club Misfits, are on a mission to bring an authentic message of grace to the masses… and it’s working. The Capitol Christian music group, created by artists Fern and Marty, has found success in both the Christian and mainstream industries, peaking at no. 4 on the Billboard Rap chart for their song, The Misadventures of Fern and Marty. As Dove Award winners and nominees, the pair hope to reach a large audience to bring genuine conversations on depression and not fitting in.

“We are two different men with two different testimonies,” Marty said in an interview with the Christian Post. “I was hurt by the church, but I came back because I had people who loved on me. Fern left the church, went to prison, and then came back to church. We have these two stories that, I guess, connect to a lot of people who feel like they have been misfits growing up in their church…”

Their latest EP, MOOD, reflects three common seasons in life: on the mountaintop, in the valley, and transitioning. Marty shared that the duo wanted to ask the questions, “Is God still good in the mountain, is He still good in the valley? Is He always good? Do we trust Him in every season of our life, in every mood? Do we trust God with every part of our life?”

The two-part EP starts with the “mountaintop” experience, when everything feels like it’s going right….
