56 Percent Support Abortion Ban When Baby’s Heartbeat Detected

56 Percent Support Abortion Ban When Baby’s Heartbeat Detected

Contrary to conventional wisdom, Americans support bills that ban abortion after a heartbeat is detected, according to a new poll.

But it depends on how the question is phrased.

Pollster Scott Rasmussen surveyed 1,005 registered voters for the ScottRasmussen.com/HarrisX and split the samples in half to determine what Americans believe about the bills.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed such a bill into law last week.

A full 56 percent of registered voters in the new survey backed such laws when they learned a fetal heartbeat can be detected as early as six weeks of pregnancy. The question read, “A fetal heartbeat can be detected as early as six weeks into a pregnancy. Do you favor or oppose a proposal that would make abortion illegal at any point after a fetal heartbeat has been detected?” Forty-four percent of registered voters were opposed.

But support fell when the “six weeks” language was excluded.

Less than half (45 percent) of registered voters supported fetal heartbeat abortion bans when the question read: “Do you favor or oppose a proposal that would make abortion illegal at any point after a fetal heartbeat has been detected?” Fifty-five percent of registered voters opposed the bills when that language was included.

The questions included a sample size of 516 voters and 490 voters, respectively.

Archbishop Justin Welby in backlash after he defends Lambeth 2020 gay spouse ban

Most Rev Justin Welby came in for fresh criticism on Monday after he said the decision – aimed at avoiding by a boycott of the Lambeth Conference next year by traditionalists – was a “lose-lose situation”.

Rev Andrew Foreshew-Cain, who last week launched the Campaign for Equal Marriage in the Church of England, wrote to The Times to express his concern.

He said: “It is sacrificing the vulnerable for the sake of the powerful. Indeed, in making that decision, he has kowtowed to those who are promoting discrimination and prejudice across the communion.”

Held every ten years, the Lambeth Conference invites all active bishops of member churches within the global Anglican Communion body to meet, pray and discuss.

It had previously announced this year’s summit would be the first where bishops would be allowed to bring the spouses.

Threats of a boycott ensued, with some conservative bishops saying gay spouses should not be received in “good standing” at Lambeth 2020.

The consternation prompted the Anglican Communion to clarify its position, saying “it would be inappropriate for same-sex spouses to be invited to the conference”, in light of the Communion’s stance on marriage.

Speaking to The Times last week, Archbishop Justin Welby said: “Over 90 per cent of the Anglican communion are conservative on issues of sexuality.

“I’ve invited all the bishops, including those in…

Evangelicals Issue Principles on Benefits, Challenges of Artificial Intelligence

Evangelicals Issue Principles on Benefits, Challenges of Artificial Intelligence

WASHINGTON (RNS) — Artificial intelligence may allow technology to help people make wise decisions and work more efficiently.

But it is not morally neutral, argues a group of Southern Baptist and other evangelical leaders in a new declaration about technology and ethics.

“We affirm the use of AI to inform and aid human reasoning and moral decision-making because it is a tool that excels at processing data and making determinations, which often mimics or exceeds human ability,” according to the statement titled “Artificial Intelligence: An Evangelical Statement of Principles.”

“While AI excels in data-based computation, technology is incapable of possessing the capacity for moral agency or responsibility.”

Dozens of people gathered Thursday (April 11) at an event hosted by the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission for a discussion about the implications of artificial intelligence on topics ranging from faith to foreign policy.

ERLC President Russell Moore said the technological innovation could lead to new ways of sharing translations of the Bible with people across the globe who have yet to hear the gospel, and it already allows blind believers to listen to a smart speaker recite portions of the Bible.

But he said it is crucial to raise spiritual questions about the use of AI.

“For many years I have…

Professor sacked for BBC contribution says he’s considering leaving the Presbyterian Church

Rev Prof Laurence Kirkpatrick was found guilty of “gross misconduct” by a church disciplinary panel after his June 2018 BBC Radio Ulster’s Talkback programme appearance.

He discussed the Presbyterian Church’s decision to loosen its ties to the Church of Scotland, which was mainly due to the Kirk’s less traditional view of same-sex relationships.

In the church’s letter sent to Rev Kirkpatrick, he was told that he had taken part in the programme “at a time when there was considerable media comment, mostly of an adverse nature, about your employer, the Presbyterian Church in Ireland”.

It added that he had failed to gain the Church’s approval for taking part and that his comments during the broadcast were “unacceptable”.

As a result, he was “summarily dismissed” from his post at Union Theological College (UTC).

Rev Kirkpatrick told BBC Radio Ulster’s Sunday Sequence that if he left the church it would be with a “heavy heart”.

“Leaving the Presbyterian Church is certainly an option for me, and it is one that I will consider and I will think about that,” he said.

“Why would I stay in an organisation that has sacked me?”

Would you get an ‘IRS’ tattoo to avoid taxes?

Welcome to Tax Day.

What would you do to avoid ever paying taxes again?

Twenty-four percent of Americans would get an “IRS” tattoo; 36 percent would move to a different country; 15 percent would take a vow of celibacy; 11 percent would name their child “Taxes.”

Our angst over April 15 is understandable: 57 percent of us think our current tax rate is too high. Only 34 percent think it’s just right. Surprisingly, 9 percent of us think it’s too low.

Here’s the good news: tomorrow is Tax Freedom Day.

If you allocated every dollar you earned so far this year to pay your federal, state, and local taxes, your debt would be satisfied tomorrow. Everything you make beginning Wednesday would then be yours.

Tiger Woods’ “stirring triumph”

In what the New York Times is calling a “stirring triumph,” Tiger Woods won the Masters yesterday at the age of forty-three. President Trump called the win “a fantastic life comeback”; President Obama described it as “a testament to excellence, grit and determination.”

While Woods’ fifth victory at Augusta National is historic, it didn’t change history for most of us. That’s because, unless you’re involved with golf professionally, the game is a hobby for you. And hobbies are for our discretionary time. For most people, they are ancillary to our lives, not central to them.

Unfortunately, many Americans view following Jesus in the same way—as a hobby for those who choose it. To change metaphors, we see our relationship with God in the same way we see our relationship with the government: we give him what he requires so he will do what we want him to do.

A taxpayer relationship with God

C. S. Lewis described our compartmentalized lives this way: “The ordinary idea which we all have before we become Christians is this. We take as the starting point our ordinary self with its various desires and interests. We then admit that something…

Pope advises students not to ‘become a slave’ to their mobile phones

The Pope welcomed students, their family members and teachers from Rome’s Visconti High School in the Pope Paul VI Hall on Saturday.

“Free yourself from the addiction to mobile phones,” the pontiff said.

While he noted the importance of communication and using mobile phones, the leader of the Catholic Church added, “but when you become a slave to your mobile phone, you will lose your freedom”.

He also urged young people to “never to stop dreaming big and hoping for a better world for all”.

“Don’t settle for mediocrity in relationships, in cultivating who you are, in planning for your future, in your commitment for a more just and more beautiful world,” he said.

He ended by reminding those present that as the Holy Week begins ending on Easter Day, that it was “also a time of renewal for the soul – a time to blossom!”

Church set to give away petrol and prayers on Good Friday

Executive Pastor Donna Williams from the Greater St Stephen Full Gospel Baptist in New Orleans told The Christian Post: “We do this as a way of giving back to the community.

“This is the second year that we will be doing it. We call it [the] Greater Good Friday Gas Giveaway.”

The first 250 people to turn up at Sterling Express station and the Gentilly-Paris Shell from 9am until 11am will receive the gift.

“We plan to service 250 people and we have two different gas stations that they give the gas away, so once we reach the amount that we expect to giveaway then unfortunately we just have to turn some people away,” Williams said.

Once 250 people have been served, the church will also offer prayers and an invitation to join them for their service on Easter Sunday.

When the church first held the event last year, Williams said they were able to invite many people to church and about 20 per cent of them showed up for the service the following Sunday.

Rick Warren’s church hosts Rwandan president, sparking outrage

Rick Warren invited Kagame – who has ruled Rwanda since 2000 to speak “as we join our Rwandan brothers and sisters in remembering the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi and thank God together for the renewal the country has experienced over the last 25 years”.

However, Kagame is a controversial figure that has also been blamed for denying Rwandans basic human rights.

Aristide Rwigara is the younger brother of Diane Rwigara, who ran against Kagame for president and was imprisoned along with her mother and sister after he came to power.

Ms Rwigara was barred from running in presidential elections and spent over a year in prison before being acquitted.

Aristide Rwigara told the Los Angeles Times: “Why would he give attention to someone who has closed thousands of churches and who has consistently denied human rights to his own people?

“This cannot go unchallenged. Warren is a global figure, and if you want to wear the mantle of spiritual leadership, why would you do this?

“I used to think he was the real deal, and then I found out that he backed the government — a government that stifles all manner of opposition, that has no humanity.”

Kagame told Warren at the church that he had the difficult task of reintegrating society and uniting the population after the genocide.

“We had a tragic situation where over one million people died,” Kagame said.

“Every…

Six Things We Have Learned Since the Publication of Autopsy of a Deceased Church

I was stunned.

When I wrote Autopsy of a Deceased Church five years ago, the response took me by surprise. While all authors expect or hope their books will be bestsellers, I frankly didn’t see it coming. Hundreds of thousands of book sales later, Autopsy became the all-time bestseller in the genre of church leadership.

Why? Why did church leaders, both vocational and laity, respond to the book with this level of interest? The concept was simple. We interviewed church members of churches that had closed their doors or died. We performed an autopsy of deceased churches. We found out why these churches died.

After about a year of receiving questions and comments from readers, I saw a common theme emerging. The readers wanted to know what they could do to prevent their churches from dying. Ironically, a book about the death of churches became a book about hope for churches.

While the sales of the book remain strong to this day, I think it’s worth noting what we have learned in the five years since I wrote the book. On this fifth anniversary celebration of Autopsy of a Deceased Church. Here are six things we’ve learned.

  1. Most members of dying churches didn’t see it coming. Many of the members were still dealing with the shock of the death of their churches when we interviewed them.
  2. Many of the members and leaders of these churches would have begun revitalization efforts if they knew how. I am so grateful for the revitalization revolution taking place today. Churches have resources and…

Joyce Meyer Devotional 15 April 2019 — Unoffended

Topic: Unoffended [Joyce Meyer Devotional 15 April 2019]

Read Previous MESSAGES HERE

Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense. — Proverbs 19:11

One of our first responses when someone hurts or offends us can be to pray: “God, I choose to believe the best. My feelings are hurt, but You can heal me. I refuse to be angry; I refuse to be offended.” It’s important to be firm in your determination that you will not be offended because offense is a trap that pulls us away from God, His people, and His principles.

The word offense comes from the Greek word skandalon. A skandalon was the part of an animal trap that held the bait; its purpose was to lure a victim. Offense is bait that will lure us into a trap of full-blown bitterness, resentment, and unforgiveness.

When you are tempted to be offended, choose to forgive right away. Don’t give the bitterness you feel a chance to take root in your life. Choosing to live without offense is one of the wisest choices you can make. If you need to forgive someone, today is the best day to do it!

Prayer Starter: Father, please show me any areas where I may be harboring bitterness or offense. Help me learn to be quick to forgive and hard to offend. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

From Joyce Meyer’s Ministries.
